>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

If you want help:
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA).
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate.
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?

CPUs:
>G4560 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - if you can't afford better or specifically need 8 threads but not a very powerful CPU
>R5 1500x - Buy the 1600 instead
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; Get a 1600x if you don't OC
>R7/Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/mixed use; Not required for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>RX 560 and GTX 1050Ti - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games
>RX570 - 1080p@60hz at high, running most maxed older games at 144+hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@60hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; Go for the RX580 if you can
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@144hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen benefits from high speed RAM

General:
>ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
>Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
>NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
>The Ryzen lineup comes with exceptionally good stock coolers. (with the exception of the 1600X) consider using them over any sub 35USD cooler.

Just spend 8-9 hours trying to get my ryzen build to work here's what i built.
PSU: Thermaltake 630 semi-modular smart se
Motherboard: MSI B350 TOMAHAWK ATX
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8gb 3200mhz cas 16
CPU: Ryzen 5 1600
GPU: Zotac GTX 1080 AMP! EXTREME

So at first every time i'd power it on it would light up for 0.5sec and then shutdown instantly.
I realised the problem was with the screws i had on the motherboard i had screws some that
i didn't need to so what happened is that the motherboard was screwed wierdly onto the metal
panel so i suppose that caused some sort of interferance but as soon as i removed those screws
i was able to turn on my system and it would stay on.

Then, however no matter how long i waited there would be nothing output on my screen.
So then i started testing every possible thing trying to troubleshoot my issue, i put the
rams in every combination possible(even tried single ram), i tested my gpu on my old rig
and it worked perferctly, i tested my psu on my old rig and it worked perfectly, i removed
the cpu made sure no dust or anything was on the pins or the socket, i just powered on the
computer with only motherboard, cpu, ram, my old gpu, and the m.2 drive still nothing,
i noticed the red leds that had things like "ram", "cpu" next to them so i tried booting w/o
ram to see if the "ram" led would stay on. Both "ram" and "cpu" leds were on. I put the ram
back in and boot again. The "cpu" led is on for 10 seconds after turning on the pc and then it
goes off.

I'm in despair anons, i have no way to figure out for sure whether it is my cpu or motherboard
or if i can even rma the mobo if it was my mistake for breaking it when i screwed it too hard on
the case, please give me the magic tip that will solve everything, here in greece to save that kind
of money i've been working all year...

Sorry for the repost but i honestly don't know what the fuck to do now

What's wrong with MSI B350 boards?
The slow boot times are fixed, they also support the cheapest 3200mhz 2x8gb kit at full speed.

You guys are messing with noobie's money.

It's fun and entertaining to play AMD vs Intel memewar etc.

But in the PCB thread we should be objective.

There's no way in hell the i7 7700k doesn't belong on the chart, as much as the 1600 does.
They're both the best deal at their respective user case scenarios and pricepoint, ESPECIALLY IN GAYMEN
>>
>>61129210
>I realised the problem was with the screws i had on the motherboard i had screws some that i didn't need to so what happened is that the motherboard was screwed wierdly onto the metal panel so i suppose that caused some sort of interferance

You shorted it. It's dead. RMA it and say it was just dead out of the box, they can't prove you broke it.
>>
>>61129210
>the otherboard was screwed wierdly
how?
you got any pics?

this seems like a pretty bg issue, if the change in screwing actually resulted in a different boot, it means that it actually affected your motherboard.

try clearing the CMOS and disconnecteverything and build it from the ground up, making sure everything is OK. then tell us what happens.
>>
>>61128698
>>61129071
How does this look?
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/9by9HN
While I'll do a lot of gaming, I also need this for heavy programming, RTL design, and circuit simulation. None of which are technically demanding like video editing not working at all without good hardware, lower compile and synth times would be nice.
>>
>>61129268
Nice try at the "I'm the reasonable one" angle, Sanjay. Nobody who has the best interests of a "noobie" (you should tell your line manager that Intel need to update their glossary of internet slang by the way, nobody says this), would recommend they buy a quad core CPU in 2017.

MSI's AM4 boards have been garbage. Far more RAM compatibility issues than the other vendors, and the Xpower Titanium is an absolute fucking JOKE compared to the Crosshair VI or Taichi, despite being more expensive than either. It doesn't even have a fucking external clock generator.

>>
>>61129386

>>
>>61129350
Dyson "bladeless" fans have blades, they're just hidden in the base. Which is why they can't be shrunk down. They're also noisy as fuck and just plain inefficient compared to a normal fan.
>>
>>61129373
do you only pan to have ONE monitor?
if so, get the 27, don't be a fag
>>
>>61129284
But shouldn't that cause it to not turn on at all? The thing is that it just stays on doing nothing...
Also another thing i noticed is that the gpu fans when i turn it on they spin a little but shortly after they stop.

>>61129286
On the case there are some holes that stick out and fit the motherboard perfectly and some holes that are
on the metal plate of the case, i screwed the edge of the motherboard on those too for some dumb reason
because i had some different screws lying around that i thought they were supposed to go there. Which i
think resulted in having the pins on the back of the mobo to connect throu the case plate.
Also i did remove the battery from the motherboard but i'm not sure what else you need to do to clear CMOS
on newer pcs.
>>
>>61129386
Anything starting from Kaby Lake and Bristol Ridge/Ryzen, you won't get updates on W7 by default.

However there are ways to unlock updates if you really want to.
>>
>>61129414
>But shouldn't that cause it to not turn on at all?

No. If you didn't kill the power circuitry, there's no reason why it shouldn't turn on. Whatever you fried is just stopping it from actually working. Pray you didn't fry your RAM or your CPU too.
>>
>>61129412
I have a 24inch 60hz 1080p monitor i'll be using as an aside, but the 1440p will be my main monitor. Just wondering if the 4 inches is worth the premium.
>>
>>61129409
what if... a case where you put those hidden fans in the base... brb going millionaire
>>
>>61129350
what a stupid post.

they have blades. it's a hybrid between a turbine and a fan...
more like a conic fan in a venturi to accelerate the air.

it would work good on CPU colers actually, because of the good static pressure. but would probaly be too big, because of the necessary heatsink
>>61129414
if you removed the battery, but the PSU is still connected there's a chance that the CMOS is still not cleared. you can look at a small diagram online, you need to make contact in two of the lower MoBo pins to clear it. sometimes there's a dedicated button, in higher end MoBos.

>>

>>

Ok then remove these also.

You guys are completely delusional.
>>
>>61129470
I removed the battery when the motherboard was clear ofcourse.
So in that case in which process should i do this?
Remove and put in again the battery while the motherboard is unplugged
then plug it in make sure power is running throu it and use my screwdriver
to conduct electricity throu the pins?
>>
>>61129477
there have been like 4 different "my MSI mobo isn't working" posts this afternoon
>>
>>61129545
yeah, just short the indicated pins in your motherboards manual.

I'm just concerned about the thing with the screws. I stil ahve no idea how that happened. you sure you didnt scrape the motherboard in any part? that could make a short that could potentially fry your CPU .
>>
>>61129543
Those chips don't cost $350, you fucking retard. It should go without saying that sacrifices must be made when you're on a budget, but not when you're paying top fucking dollar for a "high end" rig and getting a quad core for your money like it's 2006.

You are the only delusional one here, Rajesh.
>>
Guys, Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7?
>>
>>61129587
He doesn't even need to have scraped anything. If the back of the motherboard was touching the case or a misplaced standoff, that's enough to short it out and fry something.
>>
Any recommendations on antivirus? I don't know what the opinion is on antivirus here and I've seen people say you don't really need it. I should mention I'd like something that's not very taxing. I'm currently using avast free on my old laptop.

>>
>>61129642
not him, but what do you do?
>>
>>61129587
Nope, it's probably that it was touching the metallic plate on the case because
it kept turning off instantly when it was touching it and then i unscrewed those
screws on the edge just a little bit and it stopped shutting off but still didn't boot
>>
I was thinking about getting:
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/8vKMHN

Someone suggested:
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/djq9HN

I don't want/need a gaming desktop. Usually indie games are on my agenda (magicite, Everything, Shelter) maybe the occasionally DOTA. I am mostly going to torrent movies and music.

The second option might be too expensive for me? They suggested a Pentium 4560 at least for running any games.

Sugestions?

My old 2 TB HDD is crapping out after like 6 years of service so I'm looking to replace it.

Looking for 4TB this time, I'm using it a lot so stuff like WD Blue rated with 2400 hours per year is not gonna cut it. No NAS or Raid, just a single old fashioned HDD for everything. Already have an SSD for booting my OS.

Is toshiba any good? They seem to have good specs and they're cheaper than WD.

Also has tech advanced far enough to make a modern 5400rpm one as fast as my 6 year old 7200rpm HDD?

You must have a very boring life.
>>
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/K42YZ8

My basic points:
* Currently not doing anything too GPU-intensive, although that's mostly because my current computer sucks. But current/future AAA vidya is an expense I don't want/need to get into again, so I don't need anything ridiculous on that front.
* Compiling code/programs does warrant a decent CPU. And I do want the option of playing some, say, 2011 games at decent-ish rates. (Combined with above: want to possibly play GTA4 well, not so much GTA5).
* I could go either way on the case. I basically just don't want something huge, nor something (much) bigger than what I have now -- more concerned about length and height: current case is about 40cm length, 35cm weight. The lack of space for optical drives is somewhat disheartening, but not a deal breaker.
* $600 is kind of a perfect amount, where $700 would be the hard maximum.
* Don't know about overclocking, or other in-depth stuff. Besides maybe upgrading and cleaning, I don't want to open it up again.

Have I stumbled upon a good build for myself, y/n?

I've spent around $500 on various types of RAM. I can't get it to boot up. I can't get a chiptone out of the motherboard. I have a monitor that's plugged into my graphics card, which is seated comfortably in my mobo. The fans work. I swear I can hear the harddrives spin. But I can't so much as get BIOS. The latest RAM was explicitly on the qvl list. Help.

>>
>>61130719

thanks. What's rmaing?

Here's some more fun facts I keep forgetting to add;
the case wires are plugged into the mobo. When the PSU is on and plugged in, I can press the big power button on the case and everything starts turning on. Case power light will glow.
I can't press any buttons on the case to turn it off; power doesn't work, reset doesn't work. holding power for thirty seconds doesn't work. I have to toggle the PSU's switch.
Sometimes, if I toggle the PSU switch and then toggle it again within 5-10 seconds, the fans stop spinning down and head back up to full blast.

>>
>>61131191
Use electricity to get the volts
>>
>>61131191
Get one or two 9V batteries, put them in series if you use two, and then attach wires to the terminals. Take out your GPU and start touching the other ends of the wires to an metallic joint or pin. Eventually you're bound to send 9-18V across an IC it shouldn't and fry the transistors.
>>
>>61131230
They won't discover I tampered with it?
>>
>>61131240
There's no way to tell how it was shorted unless you burn it. They likely won't even try to find what shorted, as there's a million different ways you could short a GPU. There's no way to prove when it was shorted either.
>>
>>61131262
So that is grounds for RMA? Hmm maybe sometime down the line. Destroying an expensive card to get more mhz seems awfully wasteful to me. I was just wondering if poor silicon lottery was grounds for RMA. Thanks anyway

what gpu? say you're getting black screen issues and then request RMA. they should accept it. break off one of the small transistors at the back and they'll never know. i had actual black screen issues with an older gpu and they accepted it for rma but then i found out that all they do is install a new bios and that new bios has its own issues. i ended up breaking off one of the small transistors at the back by accident but that caused the gpu to have no video output at all but everything else was functioning like fans, led's etc. they ended up sending me a gpu which was twice as fast as a replacement so it worked out in my favor in the end

1080ti. I would have to unscrew the backplate to fuck with it. Boost 3.0 only goes up to 1980 mhz while everywhere on the internet people are reporting it going up to 2000-2050mhz. >>
>>61131380
just go into afterburner and set power and temp targets to the max. it might be power limited or temp limited.

you can always just OC it. most reviewers i've seen can add an extra 300 to the memory and between 120-150 to the core on pascal gpu to achieve stable clocks. just try 120 and 300, if it's stable and your gpu is at least 2ghz then you're good to go and probably won't need any further overclocking.
>>
>>61131476

+135 on core
+400 on mem

I sometimes play games, sometimes do programming, watch movies with high audio and video bitrates and a lot of multitasking. I guess it doesn't require that many cores but after this build I won't be upgrading any parts for a good few years. Regarding the cooler, I prefer lower temps.
>>
>>61131631
yeah make sure you didn't accidentally unlink your temp limit and set it to like 80C or something.

also go into geforce control panel and make sure your global power setting isn't "optimal power". set it to "prefer maximum performance" or if you don't want your gpu idling at ~1500 mhz all the time you can set it to "adaptive" and then manually set any game which you notice runs at lower clocks to "prefer maximum performance" in the program settings. that's what i've done.

There's a few alternatives to using shared network devices that pops into my mind, not many, but yeah.

- A common alternative is to use a cloud-based file hosting service (not a popular suggestion here because of botnets and whatnot).
- You could invest in a home server and SCP your files to and fro the server, if you have time and money to invest into it.
- Or you could directly copy and paste the files you want to use in a external HDD or USB flash drive.

These are some of the suggestions I can think of at the moment. Though it might be better to think of ways to somehow speed up the time it takes for your laptop to appear online on the shared network drive.

I have my PC in my "office" and play games in there most of the time. However, occasionally I like to play on my TV in my living room. Right now I just have a laptop so it's no big deal, but I'll have a desktop soon. Note this is just casual playing. I'm not getting serious on the couch.

Which would you guys prefer:

I could shutdown my desktop, unplug everything, and move it to my living room. Obviously this would be a pain in the ass.

Alternatively, I live in an apartment, and my TV is ~30 ft from my desktop, so I could run an HDMI cable whenever I wanted to play in the living room no problem. However, obviously latency goes through the roof. It's casual play so it's not a huge issue, but I still couldn't tolerate it if it were really bad. I'm also not sure how to handle audio and input. Obviously It'd be wireless, but I doubt your typical wireless kb/m would reach through the walls, and I've always been annoyed with bluetooth stuff.

What would you guys do?

>>61134396
Your water cooling unit won't break if you don't OC your machine and work it to the breaking point, which I don't need to do.

Only idiots who run 1440p on a GTX 1070 need to OC.

Don't be fucking retarded.

I am going to be playing Fallout 4 and Grand Theft Auto V at 4K, and using the internet other times.

I don't need to OC.
>>
So, since the mid-range GPUs are gone from the market, I've got an offer from a trusted source to buy a used 980Ti for approx. the price of a 1060 6GB. Is it worth it for a Ryzen 1600(maybe X) build?

Hey /pcbg/
Should I buy a R7 1700 or a 7700k?
I have a GTX 1070, I use my PC for mostly gaming and am on a 1080p monitor.
I've been hearing about the microbug and heat issues on 7700k so is it worth going with the 1700 despite my PC being used for mostly gaming with such titles as: GTA V, BF1, PUGB ARMA 3 etc?
>>
>>61135063
The X versions are just better binned and theoretically capable of higher overclocks. All of AMD's Ryzen and FX series are overclockable.
And unlike Intel, it isn't just the high end motherboards that allow overclocking. While Intel restricts overclocking to Z-boards, AMD allows overclocking on the B350 (equivalent to Intel B150/B250) and Z370 chipsets (equivalent to Intel Z170/Z270)

>>61135108

the 1600x comes with some fancy overclocking shit which automatically overclocks the cpu based on temps or something like that kinda like what nvidia has on the gpu side with their gpu boost tech and also comes with a higher clock compared to the 1600 by default hence why it says if you don't plan on overclocking.

if you do plan on overclocking then the 1600x is terrible value because the 1600 can match the 1600x with ease and also comes with a free cooler in the box, whilst being like $50 cheaper.
>>

>>
>>61135159
I personally don't see a point of paying for the 1600X from a value standpoint. The Ryzen series are NOT good overclockers. They're very efficient and powerful, but they do not overclock well. AMD says for reliability, not to push more than 1.425 Volts at them. Overclocking-wise, the Ryzen chips top out around 4.1 Ghz on the best binned chips. 3.9 is average.
If overclocking is the only thing you care about, get an AMD FX chips. While their IPC is shit, they are currently the best overclockers out there, and still hold the world record, which I believe is around 8 Ghz.
>>

Ryzen 5 1500X or 1600 then. At 60Hz, the i7 is terrible value and offers NO advantage over other cheaper chips. Only go i7 7700K if you plan on a 144 Hz build, otherwise it is completely worthless.

>>
>>61135253
are you retarded? why would you recommend someone a fucking fx cpu for overclocking when it's known that it sucks balls even when overclocked to over 5ghz? if he wants to overclock and get max performance his only choice is intel kaby/skylake right now.
>>
>>61135264
It's not that the 1700 has better gaming performance than the 1600. It does. But with a 60Hz screen, you will never notice it.
>>
>>61135273
I never said it was a good performer. But is currently IS the best overclocker on the market This is fact. The performance is shit but you can brag all you want about Ghz, which is all that matters to some people.
I'd rather have a lower clocked powerful CPU than a highly clocked shit CPU.
Kaby Lake can't overclock as well as FX. This is fact. Untie your panties. I never said anything good about FX performance, only that they are the best overclockers, which is true.

>n-no its intel housefire waah
Skylake and Kaby Lake don't require insane vCore to overclock 300-500mhz. There's no housefire when you stay at stock voltage and bump up the frequency, assuming you're using something better than the stock cooler. Yes, those CPUs have shit thermal compound beneath the IHS, that doesn't mean much for the average user.

It's a problem with the i7 too. The problem isn't on AMD or Intel's side but Microsoft wanting everyone to use the botnet. It's a Microsoft issue, not AMD or Intel. The Kaby Lake CPUs do it too. All Microsoft does is block updates on those CPUs. There's third party open source downloads that unblock the updates.

With the 1700 you're just looking at 8 cores instead of six, which won't yield much noticeable performance increase in vidya. Abso-fucking-lutely. Even laptops commonly ship with 16GB, and Android phones with 8GB are cropping up. >>61136207
Water cooling is a very cost inefficient type of cooling, it cost much more than air but performs marginally better. You'd be better off getting an air cooler between $50 - $70. Air coolers also have 0 chance of failure as it's literally just metal with a fan strapped on it that you can replace any time of the day, whereas if a watercooling pump fail or if there's a leak enjoy your RMA(s). I won't recommend you to go watercooling because it's rarely a good choice in my opinion.
>>
>>61136298
>a R5-1600X would be the recommended CPU for my mid-high tier gaming PC?
R5 1600 would be as it also is overclocked, it just overclocks slightly lower but we're talking about ~3.8GHz on 6 cores vs 4 GHz, there's not much of a difference and very few people need the extra MHz.

>coolers that aren't expensive but perform well enough?
212 Evo and Cryorig H7 are usually recommended if you don't want to spend a big amount of money.

Please don't use the quote arrow to ask questions, it's pretty confusing

>a friend has 1x32gb (ddr3). is it worth it to get another MoBo for ddr3 slots just to have more GB of RAM
Ryzen doesn't support DDR3 nor any AM4 motherboards so don't count on it. 32GB is also quite a lot, though video editing & encoding (through premiere, vegas and other softwares) does benefit from more RAM so it doesn't really hurt but it's not really needed either
Gigabyte 1070 really run quite hotter than MSI 1070 and are just as powerful. The differences between all of them is really small in term of performance, cooling and price is where the difference lies but going for the cheapest as long as it's not a blower-style cooler (or an exceptionally bad model) is generally the way to go

Either wait (best option as you're not a big gamer) or grab a temp card like a 760 or something (I mean hell my 660 was running strong on most games today at medium-low)

Thanks man. I would like to play modern games but am fine with medium graphics.
I used to spend every day all day gaming, now I only do it about once a week on the weekend, but when I do it's usually 6-10 hours

Yea, well case is adjustable to what you'd prefer. Pick up a 760/660/670 off eBay and you should be solid for now. >>61137483

What CPU is better for emulating games, 1800x or i7 7700k?
>>
>>61138396
7700k is the best CPU period for emulating, and Ryzen CPU are weaker than Intel at emulating in general
