It's basically just two tables put together to make the L shape, two legs on both ends and one in the middle on the longer desk on the right hand side of the room. The drawer unit only supports the desk underneath the window. >>61127382

Cute kitty, I have a black maine coon, too, but god damnit does your speaker placement trigger me. When you set them up like that you're literally pointing them 90 degree perpendicular to your desk sitting position. At that point, it's completely unbalanced sound which you're hearing scattered reverberations and reflections from the rear wall(s).

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S49017829/#/S19020480

Looks like frosted glass in the IKEA shop page, but it isn't. It's clear glass with a two sided cardboard insert, so it just looks frosted since the white cardboard side is against the glass.

I did not install the aluminum handles, and purchased additional hardware to close the open seams on the display cases to form a dust-tight seal. All-in-all, each full display bookcase cost me about $250 and a lot of time to fine-tune the door placement juuuuust right.

You can see the dust-resistant sealing between the aluminum frame on the doors and the dark brown bookcase.

I use my speakers for both at desk and at bed listening. I haven't wall mounted my center channel speaker, yet, but it'll be able to tilt up and down just below the TV.

Pangea DS-400 stands filled with cat litter granules.
Polk RTi A3 bookshelf speakers
10" Lazy Susan https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001AMHEU6/
Blutack to hold the lazy susan, stand, and speakers together.

But since you have floorstanding speakers, you can't really do much about having them just point directly into the desk either. But you could do something like that and it might work out.

The tweeters would clear over the desk and be unobstructed, but since the woofers would be doing low frequency waves only, the low frequency waves should penetrate easily through obstacles just fine.

Hmm, damn USB.
Sound should be FireWire but it's dead.
>>
>>61137054
USB audio has been working fine with professional devices like RME and MOTU for about a decade, with high channel counts and low latency.
it's up to the manufacturer to not implement it like shit
>>
>>61137127
USB is still a data interrupt signal while FireWire had streaming information.
So it is better than USB for that reason.
Active vs passive connections.

I got a few questions for you battlestation savvy anons.
What are some great corner desks for relatively cheap?
Is Ikea actually one of the better places to check for desks?
What are some easy, aesthetic desk mods?
>>
>>61139246
There's no such thing as a great cheap desk unless you get a steal from a friend or a thrift store. Almost all of what you're going to find for less than like $1000 is going to be particle board or veneer at the most. Veneer isn't bad but if it's shitty veneer it's worse than laminated particle board.

Cheapest way I've found to make a great desk is to just buy countertops from ikea. Most people go for a karlby since it comes in affordable black walnut veneer. I personally bought two 74" Hammarp counters, cut 25" off one of them and finished both with wipe on poly, sanded with 600 grit after every coat. Pieces them together in a corner with some support plates, adjustable legs, and an Alex drawer.

That method is honestly rather lacking in creativity at this point but it's honestly the best desk you're gonna get for $400 or so.

why are your windows so high up?
>>
do people find having themselves more productive or less productive with three monitors?

it seems like having a third monitor would be more distracting and more likely to divide your focus. even with with a 2nd monitor i find myself turning it off sometimes so i don't have unnecessary bullshit to be distracted from.
>>
>>61142849
Despite an ADD diagnosis, I don't find that to (always) be the case. When I'm just fucking around on YouTube or other shit, I might turn to another monitor and type out a reply on 4chan (hi!), but when I'm actually working on something, I close distractions and only throw up related information on my other monitors to keep from having to switch windows constantly. If I don't have enough information to fill three monitors, one or two of them will instead get full screened music players or torrent clients or other things like that.

i have these arms but they are not conjoined in the middle like this guy has. you can pretty much move them anywhere, as long as your desk isnt pressed up against a wall. if it is, make sure your desk is thick as fuck otherwise you wont be able to get two monitors next to each other.

my desk is 2 feet wide and these arms are absolutely terrible for it. if it was double the width they would be perfect.

I'm brand new from leddit, so I'll take my lumps.

But I have several questions:
How is the picture on your monitor compared to your everyday 4k monitor from Samsung or Dell?

Do you prefer to use your headphones or monitors for music listening?

What stain did you use on your IKEA countertop, if at all? I like the deep color and have the regular birch-looking top on my desk.

You've no idea. Greatest country I ever visited. We went on a lark back in 2015 with an easy jet deal for 250 Euro, two tickets, round trip from Berlin.

Rented a car at Sixt and the people were so nice and trusting it was eerie. Went up to Applecross and asked for a B&B room. They told my wife and I "You'll sleep here, here's the key, breakfast at 7:30-9:00"

I said, "Wait, don't you want our passports? Credit cards? a deposit?"

"It's okay. We trust you!"

Went back the next week to visit the Outer Hebrides.

Just started installing acoustic treatment around my den / battlestation last night. Ran out of t-pins and forgot to order the corner pieces like an idiot.

>>61152942

You're an idiot.

2" wedge foam does wonders for reducing reflections and echos in a room with big flat, empty walls. You just have to put enough of it up and in the right places.

My "home office" is used by three people, and when we're all in there rattling away on mechanical keyboards, chatting on VoIP, or in one case slapping away at an arcade stick the noise levels become a fucking din.

I put up about 30 square feet last night before I ran out of pins and the effect is already noticeable. I've got another 60 to go.

Hanging tapestries on the walls or putting rugs down on tile floors also help.

http://audiophilereview.com/room-acoustics/the-top-4-acoustic-myths-that-need-to-be-consigned-to-the-garbage-can-forever.html

Please, dude. Gluing some foam to the walls really doesn't do shit for acoustic treatment. It's all placebo and you don't know shit about whether it "works" until you experimentally measured it before with a constant sound and then experimentally measured it after with the same constant sound at the same volume and location.

For you to get real results, you'd need limp mass material, such as rock wool, corning insulation, or shredded denim fiber (probably the newest candidate on the scene, http://www.bondedlogic.com/ultratouch-denim-insulation/), and you'd need it everywhere in the room, in a thick 4" or more layer. And even with these limp mass fibers, you really aren't doing shit for controlling bass, but you can control reverberations and reflections from short wavelength sound waves from mids to highs.

Literally kill yourself for swallowing and trying to spread this garbage foam paneling placebo shit.

So your source is a "four things that...!" debunk article with no actual test data from a guy who owns an acoustic treatment company?

Or maybe you're never been in a room when it was fully furnished, with wall coverings and rugs, and then been in the same room when it was empty.

Or maybe you're just deaf.

Nobody here is building a professional recording studio or trying to prevent their neighbors from hearing the screams of their tortured victims.

What they are doing is trying to make their recreation rooms sound less like a basement office.

2"x12"x12" foam panels actually do a good job of this, whether you choose to believe it or not. It would be obvious to you the moment to stepped into the room if you weren't a fucking dweller, I doubt I'd want you in my house to begin with though.

1) There's no such thing as an acoustically perfect room. Even anechoic chambers allow marginal reflection of low frequency waves, while high frequency waves are almost entirely diminished. From current science it's basically impossible to create a space that's devoid of reflections and reverberations.

2) Because the most ideal rooms are designed from the start to be isolated acoustically, it's therefore impractical for the normal person who owns a normal home to even do this, as most homes aren't at all designed to even have ONE acoustically isolated room. The most you can do afterwards would be to rip out the sheetrock and use Rockwool/Corning/Denim insulation and putting in floating sheetrock walls to control mids/highs to some degree of effect, at an absurd DIY time and money investment. Alternatively, you coat your entire room (preferably a basement if possible) with the insulation, outside the drywall in the manner that SilentPCReview does here: https://youtu.be/RXZrWqCT7R0?t=16m11s. But as you'll see, the sheer amount of sound isolation material really doesn't make the space livable on a day-to-day basis, so this is ultimately impractical.

3) Part of understanding the dynamics of room acoustics means you're not throwing money away on shit that doesn't work, ie: For every $100 spend on acoustic treatment, that money would be better spent on a) better speakers, b) better amplifier, c) ESPECIALLY better DSP to control the sound for your room.

Therefore sound isolation is a tradeoff between having practicality vs isolation, all while considering the price of the solution. You want accurate sound, but you don't want to hang all sorts of stupid shit off the wall. You want less noise going into the microphones for chat programs like discord, but you like using noisy keyboards; You need to make a standpoint on where you stand on these things because you realistically can't get the best of both worlds.
>>
>>61159618
Likewise, for measurably better audio, calibrated DSP products are the most consistent way to get a difference without the room treatment. MiniDSP sells a variety of products which you can use to correct and implement what your ideal frequency response to make even bad speakers sound accurate. Ultimately, this effect is limited by the capabilities of the speakers, in the same way that display calibration cannot exceed the monitor's out-of-the-box color gamut; it'll shrink that gamut and contrast, but the result is more accurate than what it was before.

https://www.minidsp.com/

There's also several other products available from other companies, but minidsp is the best as it's open source design, and you can choose to get basic unfinished boards all the way to completely enclosed and finished products + software + calibrated measurement microphone.

Again, foam panels are a fucking placebo. The whole "but it sounds better" has no meaning unless you measured it before and measured it after. You didn't measure shit, therefore you can't say that it assisted at all.

DSP solutions do measure room acoustical balances and compensates the signal levels sent to speakers to compensate for inaccuracies of the room. With DSP you CAN say it measures better than it did before because measurement is a fundamental part of the DSP correction process.

>>
>>61159618

Nobody is arguing that more serious solutions aren't more appropriate for more serious applications. It's not about making an ideal room even, it's about making the most of a room you already have in a relatively easy way that doesn't require a heavy remodel.

I'm not even trying to get better sound out of my equipment. I'm not going for accurate sound from speakers dude, this seems to be what you're not getting. I use headphones in my office. I've already got an amp, transducers, and DAC that do everything I need them to. It's just about reducing the disruptive impact of ambient noise which there are some easy, relatively inexpensive approaches to. I don't use speakers in my home office. I use speakers in my living / listening room and have made the appropriate

But you're wrong to completely dismiss wedge foam as doing anything at all.
