Pixel does have an advantage when it comes to software and software is the most important thing on the phone to me at least. It also might be more durable cause it has huge bezels and S8 is known to be fragile. Everything else considered I would go for S8.

The s8 has the worst palm rejection of any device on the market, if your hands aren't toddler sized.

currently rotating between the pixel xl and the s8, and the palm thing seriously makes the device unusable for any meaningful emailing / productivity stuff

It's not. I had S3, S5 and S7. All of them slowed down significantly after a couple of months, I had to factory reset to get them to be fast again.
I've finally learned my lesson and went with OP3T. Still as fast as new.

The bezel is unfortunate but it's easy to forget about.
It's MUCH easier to root, although Google is doing their best to turn that around.
It's durable as fuck and the camera STILL beats every available phone.
The S8's fingerprint reader position is moronic if you're into those.

Also, if you don't plan on rooting/jailbreaking your phone you have no right discussing them.
