Dear igv, could you make what you did with KrigBilateral, comparison with scale=ewa_lanczos but with SSimSuperRes? A comparison with and without anti-bloating shader would be great too.
>>
Did anyone try the latest plexmediaplayer release?
It's based on mpv and wm4 is working intensively on it.

Latest pre-built release are available here:
https://nightlies.plex.tv/public-test/plexmediaplayer/public-testing/latest/

I switched my htpc from kodi dsplayer to this. It's fucking less unstable and I am amazingly happy with SSimSuperRes.glsl.

Almost the same result with SSimSuperRes without doubling at all.
That means it's used all the time when upscaling without super sampling and it's fucking less slower than NGU-AA.
Madshi should rewrite his SuperRes algo or just convert the igv's one!

However I really prefer NNEDI3 for animes upscaling but the madVR one doesn't run on my machine (fallbacks to Jinc AR) and the mpv one is too slow even with 16 neurons.
>>
>>61112428
NGU AA results in a higher picture quality than NNEDI3, and comparing an upscaling algorithm with a sharpening algorithm is stupid! NGU-AA medium is also very fast!

This is a weird question

I use a 1366 x 768 TV to watch my chinese cartoons. Which should I download? A 720p to upscale using mpv or 1080p upscaled to downscale using mpv? This is for a 1366 x 768 TV.
>>
>>61116056
Download a better tv.
>>
>>61116056
Encodes can differ in quality so impossible to say. A 720p done right will beat anything mpv can do to even the best 1080, but whether or not any of the 720's were done right (or even done decently) is impossible to say. If you don't want to do comparisons and bandwidth isn't an issue, just get the biggest 1080. Unless you don't seed and it's one of my 1080's, then fuck off.

Is there any way to have avisynth display 10bit encodes properly? I'm using LWLibavVideoSource to open the file, however whenever the input video is 10-bit, its aspect ratio changes completely and weird coloring appears (pic related).

I can open the encode if I specify the format as YUV420P8, which I presume converts the depth to 8-bit, however I wanted to interleave the 10-bit encode with another one for comparison but the final output appears to be 8-bit. Also, is it possible to interleave 8-bit and 10-bit videos?
>>
>>61123025
What do you mean by " display 10bit encodes properly".
mpv will display 10-bit encodes properly but your display isn't 10-bit(unless you have one of the new 4k monitors).

TN panels are 6-bit+2(6-bit panel with 8-bit dither) and ips panels are 8-bit to 10-bit(the new ones).
There also ips panels that advertise 10-bit but in reality are just 8-bit+2(8-bit with 10-bit dither).

high bit depth in avisynth is a hack, like most things in avisynth
avisynth+ has made some progress on real high bit depth support but i'm not sure if any of the source filters support it yet

if you're using avspmod, there's an option to set the preview window to dither (you want the interleaved 10-bit option) although this build has better support for that https://files.line0.eu/builds/AvsPmod-line0-2.5.1-r432-x86-1ee9b4a.7z

When I just use scale=lanczos, GPU usage is at the same low level.

I get that if up scaling to 4K stresses the hardware, then doing so at 60fps stresses it more. But there seems to be no in between, either it hardly used the GPU or it uses 100%

Ur monitoring with stats.lua? If rendering times dont change at all means its not used. Its only used when you upscale something. You can try to check logs. log-file=log.txt Search for "dumb" because Angle, for example, is fucked up for me and advanced scalers dont work at all with it, so i have to use dxinterop.

The rendering time is the same with or without.

Dude what. So you werent upscaling your video? Luma is nnedi3 for upscale. Chroma is for when ur not upscaling anything and need to max Chroma. Same with yuv. Id suggest just to use KrigBilateral for chroma, its probably as good or better and less complicated.
>Is there a recommended quality/performance shader combination?
ssimdownscaler for downscaling is the best (i e 4K to 1080p). superres works on everything but i dont like the look on low quality low res videos. KrigBilateral is very good for chroma. These 3 cover pretty much everything.
>>61136554
>Eventually I googled my way to this:
Again. This affects chroma only. It wont make your image look better when you upscale something. Literally use this
opengl-shaders="~~/shaders/nnedi3-nns32-win8x4.hook"

Ofcourse you need to download this shader file first and put it into mpv->shaders directory.
>>
>>61136609
Hmm, I see.
There is definitely a difference with and without the three shaders now.

Would you mind telling me if there's anything redundant or otherwise dumb to have here?

Looking good but you probably should remove KrigBilateral from the chain since it can be resource hungry. You can bind it on a free button like "n" and only turn it on with videos that dont need to be upscaled or just remove it completely.

Super helpful there, sport.

If you had even bothered reading, it was clear that apparently, the only setting that had any influence on performance whatsoever was the scale parameter - with lanczos, it was low GPU usage, with ewa_lanczossharp, it was max GPU usage.

Most of my settings are about Youtube and subtitles.

Plus, since we all use a cli video player, we are granted a bit of leeway in the autism department, aren't we?

Use https://diff.pics or similar website.

For me scale-antiring is almost useless and more intensive than setting sigmoid-slope=10.

"suggests" is a stretch

What is the point of real time upscaling ?
How can I upscale a video for best quality ?
>>
>>61157442
He literally suggests dscale-antiring because spline36 is sharper and produces more ringing than mitchel. Is there any other reason to sugget antiring other than ringing? No.

newfag here, can anyone tell me why is mpv the best media player? i have no intention to insult anybody, i just want you guys to explain a little
>>
>>61160162
it has the most options, is free and cross platform, and hyper-customizable
>>
>>61160162
It's very efficient (as a result of being lightweight and well-programmed)
It correctly implements video standards and presents the video faithfully
It is configurable, but works well out of the box
It is extensible (via lua scripts or even libmpv)

However it is not a media suite, so do not expect complex playlist or library management
>>
>>61160233
>It's very efficient (as a result of being lightweight and well-programmed)

>>
>>61160447
That makes no fucking sense
efficient and lightweight but shit code?
efficient and good code but bloated?
lightweight and good code but inefficient?
>>
>>61160472
>efficient and lightweight
Requires lots and lots of hacks to optimize everything, pick the correct shortest code paths in all cases, etc. Basically, efficiency and lightweightedness are both the opposite of elegant code, and require invasive, ugly logic and/or hacks to support, especially at the same time.

Good code needs to strike a balance between performance/efficiency and minimalism/resource usage, because you can't have both at the same. Mpv generally falls into the category of trying to keep the code simple at the cost of using more resources, instead of trying to hyper-optimize for the corner cases.
>>
>>61160548
>Requires lots and lots of hacks to optimize everything, pick the correct shortest code paths in all cases, etc.
Don't be retarded, you specifically optimize the hot path and that's sufficient to be efficient. With "good code" the rest is not going to be slow anyway.
>Basically, efficiency and lightweightedness are both the opposite of elegant code, and require invasive, ugly logic and/or hacks to support, especially at the same time.
Only with a shit language and/or design.

mpv and its dependencies is written in C. You're welcome to make them more elegant or lightweight if you feel capable, but right now they're both full of hacks, complex code and optimize for performance over minimalism

I made a user script that does that, pretty much gets the A-B loop values and sends them to ffmpeg, along with some other stuff. It's >js so you probably need some of the latests mpv builds.

This seems to be making playback jerky. Why would that be? I have the monitor refresh rate set to 24Hz.
>>
>>61162018
>I have the monitor refresh rate set to 24Hz

>>
>>61162077
I always sync the fps and the refresh rate since learning that's the proper thing to do.

I hope your monitor is capable of true 24Hz and not just interlaced or something. Also do you have video-sync=display-resample in the config?

Is there a reason why I wouldn't use oversample for scaling to 4K since it's a multiple of 480/720/1080?

How do you think nearest neighbor works?
>>

I dont know. All i know is that its shit but kinda sharp and has tonnes of aliasing. How is it better than bilinear?
>>
>>61162350
>>61162383
No, he's pretty much throwing away all of haasn's vulkan code (which was designed to eventually replace vo_opengl) and implementing an ultra-simple vulkan renderer from scratch, using mostly original code.

haasn still plans on contuing his own vo_vulkan whenever the vulkan situation improves, so it's more like this is atomnuker doing his own thing because he hates quality or something
>>
>>61162445
Never, layouting in libass is basically impossible.

What Argon- seems to be planning instead is to make it so there are multiple "tabs" of information, i.e. you can use the number keys 1/2/3 to switch between different views while the stats window is open

>I summon haasn ITT. Pls explain antiring filters in mpv. Should i apply them? Do they work even close as good as madVR ones?
Antiringing in mpv is less of an "algorithm", it's just a trivial clamp and mix. In practice it only works well for separable filters (e.g. spline36), but breaks down for jinc-based filters because of complicated reasons I forgot.

The madVR algorithm is/was similar (it incorporates some heuristics to sometimes allow ringing), but I decided not to implement those because it didn't seem like they helped, at least not for the separable case. (based on my own tests)

There are some possible improvements that could be made to the polar case, some of which madVR apparently incorporate(s/d), but I was also unable to get much of an improvement there. It's possible that madVR uses a completely different algorithm now though, this was a few years ago.
