>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

If you want help:
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA).
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate.
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?

CPUs:
>G4560 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - if you can't afford better or specifically need 8 threads but not a very powerful CPU
>R5 1500x - Buy the 1600 instead
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; Get a 1600x if you don't OC
>i7-7700k - Only for 144hz
>R7/Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/mixed use; Not required for just gaming.

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>RX 560 and GTX 1050Ti - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games
>RX570 - 1080p@60hz at high, running most maxed older games at 144+hz.
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@60hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; Go for the RX580 if you can.
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@144hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p.
>GTX 1080 Ti - 1440p@144 hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games; You're kind of going overboard with this one.

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen benefits from high speed RAM

General:
>ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
>Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
>NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
>The Ryzen lineup comes with exceptionally good stock coolers. (with the exception of the 1600X) consider using them over any sub 35USD cooler.

Please don't spend money trying to make a e-currency mining build when you have 0 idea what you're getting into, what to do, what is good and such.
For starters you don't even know that what is currently being mined like crazy isn't bitcoin but ETC. Be kind to your wallet and don't make investment in things you know nothing about, you'll just end up losing a massive amount of money.
It already started to crash regardless, /biz/ is in full panic.

So, you've popped your PC-building cherry. Congratu-fucking-lations.
Now, learn to keep your system running at its peak, learn to automate tasks, and learn something useful you can do with your newly-built computer. Get your elbow-deep in your computer's anus and feel its heartbeat.
Install a non-Windows OS on it in a separate partition.
Learn how to use virtual machines to test and sandbox shit.
Learn how to render 3D-CGI gay furry midget porn at 4K using variable bitrate to fuck with the furry faggots out there and make them believe God is punishing them during the copious cumshot scenes.
Learn how to install Gentoo properly and compile fucking everything for it so you can upload screenshots of your desktop to /g/ and join the neckbeards.

This is just the beginning of this asshole we call a rabbithole.

What's a good entry GPU I can get right now? I'm just looking for something that can play any title at at least 1080p on any settings without frames dipping below 30. A friend of mine wants me to buy his GTX 970, and he's offering it to me. The problem that I have with buying ti is that his PSU packed it in, and his computer kept shutting off when he put it under load. I helped him build a new computer recently to replace it. Would the PSU just turning off hurt the component itself?

I'd like to avoid it if it's going to die when I buy it

Yeah I know. That's why I'm hoping to pick up something cheap but capable now that isn't being targeted by buttsniffers and upgrade later. Definitely no more than $200. I'd really like to spend somewhere between $100 and $150 at most. Like I said, all I really care about is that I can play any games on it without pretending it's '98 again and I play video games at 680x420. Settings can take a backseat until I upgrade.

I want a new case that
>has excellent dust protection (fan filters etc)
>will fit my old system in the interim
>has cable management
>can be configured to accept radiators in the future, but still be a closed/dust resistant system without them
>NO LEDs/PIMPMYRIDE shit, just black, no lighting
>no preference for case window

Yeah to be honest at 900p almost anything would run it at ultra, it isn't really very graphically demanding. I used to have a 7850 that ran it at ultra at 1080p no problem, it's your CPU you want to worry about.

Pic related Skyrim running at ultra at 1400p 4x MSAA with some mods on a 1080Ti. It's downclocking like 600mhz and still only 27% usage, fans are in passive mode, it's literally asleep. Game is single threaded to fuck though and is at 90% CPU usage on first core.

I guess here is better than making a new thread.

I just recently swapped out my stock intel i7 Haswell fan for a new one and for some reason, despite having applied the thermal paste like always, my shit actually runs a lot hotter now.

The GPU too. They're both chilling at around 70 degrees celcius when they used to MAX at 70 and idle at around 55-60.

What the fuck is going on?

Also there's a lot more fluctuation now too, especially with the CPU. It'll jump between 62 to 71 to 64 to 75 and just basically never settle on one temp.

My GPU is consistent at 70 which I don't like.

Check it isn't randomly increasing its memory clock to max for no reason. It's been a problem with Nvidia cards since the 900 series, they don't downclock properly with certain display setups.

K so GPU is now idling at around 60 since that's where you can lock the temperature with this thing which is what it used to with the old heatsink.

But I still don't really understand why any of this is happening...

>>
>>61115717
>since that's where you can lock the temperature
It's a really dumb feature to use. It'll just downclock the shit out of your card and make games run like crap. You want to max out the temp limits and regulate your max temp like any other non-retarded system would do, with the fans.
>>

Ran my last three Nvidia cards (1080Ti, 980Ti, 780) at as close to 90C as I could possibly get them for noise reasons, never had any issues. Really for the amount of time you're going to keep a GPU, 90C isn't anything to worry about. Think of all the people who used to run multiple reference cooler 7970's in mining rigs 24/7, those coolers are garbage and would barely keep the card below 90C.

>>61115797
It's unlikely, but possible. It's hard to fuck up a thermal paste application unless you're a retard. The pea method is the best, but in reality it doesn't make much difference.

Pic related.
>>

>WHY THE FUCK HAVEN'T THEY FIXED WITH BUG WITH 144HZ the monitors have been on the market for a million years
It's pretty fucking annoying, but fixable. Have you tried changing the timings on your monitor? I'm on a Qnix 1440p display and changing some of the values around in the Nvidia driver thing, I was able to decrease my monitors clock (not it's refresh rate) to the point where my memory idled properly. It didn't make any difference to the way it looks and I can now use the desktop at 110Hz 1440p without my card spinning up like a retard.

I really don't know why they don't fix it though, I've used the exact same setup with an R9290 and it works just fine.
>>
Do you guys usually buy extra fans for your case?
what about extra fans for your cpu coolers?

I've always just used the fans that come with cases and coolers, but I'm starting to collect some older fans from coolers long gone and using them in my case, wondering if maybe I should have been using lots of fans all along

anybody know a good solution for adding lots of fans to a computer case. my mobo only has like 3 or 4 fan headers. But I have loads of unused molex and other power connectors from my psu. a speed controller would be cool too, so they're not obnoxiously loud 24/7

Do this.

>find what percent your GPU fan spins at when it's under load
>set GPU fan speed manually to this value +20%
>go set all your case fans to 100%, run a benchmark
>come back in half an hour, note down temps
>disable all case fans
>come back in half an hour, note down temps

If there's no significant difference you're probably wasting your time buying better case fans, that's unless the motors are making annoying noises.

Use y-splitters and Speedfan. Unless you're trying to run two 180mm fans, or two 5400rpm delta fans, two fans on one header is usually fine.

No, only reason I know how to do it is because it's compulsory for my Korean monitor.

If you want to try it, go to the Nvidia control panel, change resolution, change to 60Hz (or it won't let you edit your 144Hz one), click customise, edit your 144Hz one. Go to timing and change the dropdown box to 'manual'.

Try reducing the numbers in the total pixels boxes by 5 at a time, and try decreasing the numbers in the vertical front porch and sync width by 1 at a time. What you're trying to do is to change the pixel clock of your monitor, below a certain amount your card will downclock and idle properly. If you can't get your monitor to run below whatever that pixel clock amount is at the refresh rate you want, you're shit out of luck as far as I'm aware.

I have no idea if or not it will work on your monitor, as it'll have a scaler and mine doesn't. You might just get a black screen as soon as you change anything, it might work fine, or your monitor might catch fire, I don't know.

I can't just accept a resolved problem if I don't know why the fuck it was resolved. Because then I can't just fix it if it happens again.

Help a nigga out here.

better off just buying a $770 1080ti like the evga or asus with a good air cooler. No difference in performance, they overclock exactly the same because nvidia has more or less killed "overclocking" in the old sense of the word. You get your exact 10% increase in performance, that's it.
Oh and 120mm of rad is insufficient for my 980ti, ideally you want 360mm of rad absolute minimum.
Anyway your shit is all fucked you absolutely lighting your money on fire. You are going to gain NOTHING from buying that EK trash. This will match your performance exactly and you save $600, almost enough for a second 1080ti

>i'll take your word on air cooling being the same. thanks. :)
I'm not him, but they literally are. Nvidia gimped 1080Ti overclocking. They pretty much all do 1900-2000MHz out of the box, and any gains you get ontop of that (you'll get 2100Mhz if you're extremely lucky) don't translate to meaningful performance increases.

Only reason you'd watercool one is for noise, but to be honest any of the good aftermarket coolers are practically inaudible.

Stuff like the holes at the bottom right. Doesn't matter which. As long as it is an opening in the casing that isn't covered by a fan.

If your case is pulling in more air than it can exhaust, then air will be trying to escape in whatever opening possible in the casing aka positive pressure.
