Each fork has a different goal.

Pale Moon for example isn't supposed to be faster exactly. It runs better/faster on older hardware though.

Cyberfox frankly is faster than Firefox easily.

Waterfox will handle something thats more demanding but won't necessarily be better for general use.

The address bar in Chrome is fucking terrible. By default it assumes you want to do a search and shows search results. Even if you turn off prediction, it's terrible about remembering your history. I'll start typing the name of a page I accessed a week ago and it won't be suggested in the results. Then there's the fact that it shows only six results at a time.

Firefox's address bar remembers pages I've been to FOREVER. I can type part of the name of a Youtube video I watched over a year ago and it will come up. It also shows more results. I was looking for a knife to get someone for Christmas last year, so the attached image shows what came up when I started typing a minute ago.

Also, I do technically search from the address bar, but I do it by using a prefix. For example, I'll type "yt LG G6" if I want to search for Youtube videos about the G6. One I use frequently is "gi" for Google Images. These prefixes are faster than selecting the search engine I want to use from a drop-down, and much, much faster than going to the website and searching.

All that said, I do absolutely hate Firefox's performance. It will get sluggish after an hour or two of heavy use with 10-20 tabs being used and another 30-40 open but not accessed since the last restart (so they aren't fully loaded into memory). I know this is a lot for a browser to deal with, but it seems to limit itself to using 2GB of ram. Sometimes it will just freeze up for a few seconds, sometimes much longer, other times pages will just start turning black. I have to restart Firefox very frequently. All of this is with just one addon, uBlock Origin. The performance seems to have gotten worse in FF 54.

I have looked for Chrome extensions that make the address bar more useful, but I haven't found anything. All I want to do is search all history from the address bar.
>>
>>61108937
Because it's by far the best browser.

>>
>>61120712
web extensions is chrome's plugin framework. people fear that mozilla will turn firefox into a cheap, reskinned version of chrome (like what happened to opera)
>>
>>61120780

>>
>>61120780

Thanks anon everything is clear now
>>
>>61120780
>>61120888
It's not going to be a Chrome reskin unless they adopt Blink, which they won't do in the forseeable future.

WebExtension makes for less feature rich and customizable addons than XUL, but is also not a bloated Netscape era mess of spaghetti code, so it's not something that they are doing without reason. They're looking for a leaner and more easily maintainable API.

Firefox basically wants to emulate chrome plugins. They're admitting defeat. Plus, I hear the extensions will perform worse than they would on chromium.
But it's a good thing. Their newer versions of firefox are much faster. Clinging on old versions will only give you lag and misery.

>>61120888
Opera would have died anyway. Blink proved to be much faster that presto on "modern" websites. Plus, the main reason chrome succeeded was because Google shilled it on their search engine and on android. Since they had a near monopoly on the search engine market they successfully converted people to use their browser.
Opera can only thank Google for still being relevant due to chromium being open source.
>>
>>61120888
firefox v57 will bring this change, so plan your stage exit.

my guess is that most people are loyal to their favorite browser and will stay, hoping for the best. some will skip the interface-proxy and switch over to chrome.
