Read the man
Never used Kodi. Only heard about it from normies trying to hack Fire Sticks.
How does this shit work?
Kodi doesn't work well with wireless and high bitrate media. What are you running it on? Do you have 802.11ac? I run kodi on hard wired firetv boxes (not the stick), shit works great. Plex works better for wireless but I've heard the latest kodi is better on wireless than previous.

You can play video files / streaming it off another computer you have.

Probably because you're probably running it on a Fire Stick.

it's old xbmc
you're hearing about the versions someone merged with an openload search engine and now the chinese are selling at a $100 markup as free movie boxes
these boxes are underpowered, and american boxes are even more underpowered because they were designed as vendor lockin for a particular service provider and just got an undocumented dsp to handle their preferred format. so when presented with high-bitrate files or more efficient encoding, shit will chug and your solution is basically just a newer chinabox. but this time ideally get it off alibaba where they're being sold at a sane price to the ~entrepreneurs~ who then download a couple repos and mark up triple digits.

It's essentially a video player with the UI designed around HTPC/living room use. It's pretty smart in terms of features and can read shit from network shares (by itself, no mounting in the OS required) so a typical setup is to install it on some HTPC and play media from a local NAS/home server. In addition to that it also has extensive plugin support, so there are plenty of those for various streaming sites and shit like that.
I guess some people are also using it with various plugins which stream pirated shit straight from the internet.
What is exactly slow anon?
Streaming or the actual app?
Mine was slow as hell b4 I got a SSD desu.
Streaming is often server dependant so nothing you can do abt it.
