>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

If you want help:
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA).
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate.
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?

CPUs:
>G4560 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - if you can't afford better or specifically need 8 threads but not a very powerful CPU
>R5 1500x - Buy the 1600 instead
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; Get a 1600x if you don't OC
>i7-7700k - Only for 144hz
>R7/Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/mixed use; Not required for just gaming.

GPUs:
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>RX 560 and GTX 1050Ti - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games
>RX570 - 1080p@60hz at high, running most maxed older games at 144+hz.
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@60hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; Go for the RX580 if you can.
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@144hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p.
>GTX 1080 Ti - 1440p@144 hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games; You're kind of going overboard with this one.
>AMD GPUs are suffering a lack of stock and Nvidia a rise in price thanks to miners

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen benefits from high speed RAM

General:
>ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
>Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
>NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
>The Ryzen lineup comes with exceptionally good stock coolers. (with the exception of the 1600X) consider using them over any sub 35USD cooler.

It's because of the cheap chink caps from the early 2000s onwards that would fail after a couple of years, versus Japanese ones that were much better quality. These days the divide is much smaller when comparing quality parts from either, though there's obviously still plenty of cheap chink garbage about. It's just another marketing box that manufacturers feel they need to tick when it comes to PSUs and motherboards.

Need help anons, always been computer hardware illiterate (Not to say I've never built a computer by hand, I've done it twice). Personally I know what the parts do, but not how to balance quality with my wallet.

Main issues I'm having come to a decision:
> Budget is limited at $1,000
> I am not a heavy gamer anymore, but still play resource intensive games like Dwarf Fortress, Eve, Overwatch, etc.
> Computer also needs to be able to handle very very large data processing requests through programs like STATA and excel, I work at a polling agency so there is a lot of data being processed when I finish work at home.

I don't really give a shit about any aesthetic bells and whistles like flashy cases, I just want it to run without catching fire.

What I'm hoping from this build:
> As cheap as possible without sacrificing functionality, I want "good" not "great"
> Reliability, don't want parts wearing out after a year, theoretically I might go overseas so I won't have the easiest or cheapest time getting updates

Thanks for helping a faggot who has no clue what he's doing
>>
Is there any reason not to buy a Ryzen instead of an Intel house fire? I've heard nothing but horror about sky/kaby lake and no complaints about ryzen
>>
What's your favorite 1080 ti model/general Nvidia manufacturer?
>>
>>61097909
What AMD has
>Better prices
>Better performance
>An actual stable architecture
>People who care about their customers

What Intel has
>Greediness
>Rushing products
>Indians
>Jews
>>
>>61097962
Does amd really have better performance? For highly intensive games the 7700k seems way better than the 1800x
>>
>>61097984
In gaming maybe, but in all around purposes the 1800x is better. The 1800x isnt even any better than a 1700 because you can take it and clock it up way past what the 7700k's performance offers whereas the 7700k has been having severe overclocking problems
>>
>>61097984
Yeah but the 7700k is at 80-90% usage and has lower minimum framerates. It also is on a dead socket, Intel isn't releasing any new processors on lga1151, where amd is going to support am4 for the next 5 years or something.
>>

"Seems"

On day one. Sure.

Today, not really, the R5-1600X and R7-1700X equal or surpass it now even in its "gaming" category thanks to patching + people knowing how to properly build a Ryzen setup.

Ryzen 5 1600
A cheap A320 or B350 mATX motherboard
16GB of DDR4-2666 (or higher) RAM that's on the motherboard's QVL list
a 240GB SSD and a 1TB HDD (optional)
an RX 560
a $40 mATX non-windowed case
a $50 80+ Bronze/Gold semi-modular PSU by Superflower/FSP/Seasonic
Find the best deals (not necessarily the cheapest parts) and don't hesitate to use those rebates.

Make sure the mobo has the latest BIOS update.
My x350 prime wouldn't clock over 2133 stable until a little over a month ago. The ASUS boards were hit hard on the RAM compatibility.
>>
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ZFFKTH

Howdy /g/! This is the build I have been sitting on for a couple weeks now. I would like few other opinions on some of these components. My biggest concerns are the case and motherboard.

I play a lot of Arma 3, Planetside 2, and Farming Simulator and enjoy streaming here and there. I also use Photoshop and Illustrator fairly regularly. I know Arma 3 is kind of a shitty game for Ryzen, but it has hated all processors I've ever thrown at it. If anyone has some current Arma 3 benchmarks for the 1600 I'd really appreciate a look.

I'd like to overclock to 3.7-3.8 ghz to get some more performance in the games; is the motherboard too cheap for that? Will the average B350 VRMs be capable of those clocks? What if I got a good chip and wanted to go up to 4.0?

The case doesn't have a ton of reviews so I don't know much about it. If anyone has better recommendations I'd be very grateful. I don't want to spend much more than 60 bucks; I want good airflow, a simple design, and a nice side panel window without fan holes.

For the GPU I was planning on an RX580 or GTX 1070; I will use a pretty mediocre 1080p 60hz monitor for a while but would like to upgrade to a 1440p sometime early next year.

I've been out of the PC building loop a while so I need all the feedback I can get. My total budget cannot go over $1100 and I'd like to stay in the $950-1000 range if possible.

ill peep that pretty soon, i assumed they would be since asus and gskillz had a thing for eachother with rgb, and with the gpu im going to go for something under $100. there's no gpu in the build because i cant think of any to use. it was originally suppose to go with 1070 but ETH.

I tried buying this PC off craigslist last week for $900 thinking he would come back with $950-$1000. The thing is used for 6 months and obviously a pre-built so parts are probably cheap.

He got angry at my offer and told me to fuck off and I asked what he wanted, he told me $1500. Well bestbuy rn has the sameone for $1500, also I put together something quick on pcpp, but I was wondering if anyone wants to build something cheaper than $1500 that smokes this thing out of the water? I want to send him a few builds.

1066mhz is correct since DDR means double data rate and 1066 x 2 = 2132 and that is the minimum speed of DDR4. You should always put your RAM in dual channel slots. Also try turning XMP on. See the last bar. 1499mhz. That should be right timing.

just less in general if put against 7700k. obviously you can change graphic settings to get to any fps you'd like.

I just mean in general lets say 1 game benchmark says the 7700k will get 140fps where the 1700x might only report 120fps.

this is still due to in gaming high core clock still is king, but in everything else the 1700x mops the floor with the 7700k. I.e video render etc.

if fps in games is all you care about and you will do nothing else buy game, then you are better off getting a 7700k and OCing it to the higest you can get it to.

the reason ryzen is getting popular is because it gives pretty good performance in games while also allowing users to get much better render times and well as other work related stuff while also providing good game performance.

it is really a give and take. you just have to decide if you want a more well rounded build, or just go straight for FPS in games and nothing else.
>>
>>61102477
Hardware wise what you want to do is fine, it's just Adobe shit that doesn't have a function to specify what card to use for rendering (at least as far as I know using versions of After Effect CS). Maybe you can get a separate renderer?

Can you spoon-feed me please?
I've searched around and all I found that looked accessible to a 14yo brain was this youtube video.
https://youtu.be/APcboOpP4TY
and even then it doesn't seem viable.
Is there a guide specifically on the /g/wiki for this?

Recent games benefit from more cores, so the i7 id's inferior. Enjoy your gaymes from 2014 I guess.

Is this a bait or what. There are two options, and he recommended one of these, but he didn't say the other was pure shit.
Also, note that he said "if", which would mean you could go with a 1700/1800 if you care about other stuff that aren't gaming. Read that post above.

There's a bunch data on games all over the net where you can see that in gta5 Intel wins and in games that came out a half year ago amd wins.

hey guys, i have a 10y.o potato pc worse than my microwave and have finally gathered just enough money to buy a gaming pc. i almost have no idea what to buy.

i wanna run overwatch/gta v tier games on high while being able to record at 60fps. was thinking of shadowplay as recording tool and premiere for editing. i have a 1440x900 screen, which is gonna be my 2nd, gonna buy a 1920x1080, dunno if ill go for 144hz since my budget is around $800, max $1000 for everything (including screen), im a eurofag

gonna start looking into OP's links right after i post this

Should I wait for the i58xxx in August before getting the ryzen or both of these are going to be too on par with each other?

G4560 + 1070
What do you think? Only for gaming.
>>
>>61103002
Look into Ryzen 5 1600 and 1070 as GPU but you may not find it anymore due to miners. Midrange is mostly sold out.
You'd have to go up to 1080 or down to 1050Ti.

>>61103061
G4560 is a budget CPU on a dead platform that will bottleneck the 1070. Stupid idea.

Do i really need 2 frontal fans for my build?
The case (s340) comes with one at the top and one at the back, and the lads at the store said it's gonna be ok, but i'm not sure.
Furthermore, is the CPU cooler direction critically important? i might not be able to fit my ram if the stupid-large msi core frozr fan is on the ram side.

Can someone check this out and hold my hand for me and tell me if this is okay?

What Ram should I get? Ram's soppose to have an effect on ryzen so I heard

What UPS should I get aswell. Perferrably one thats cheap. I get alot of black outs here and apparently its broken my gpu once and my power supply another.

Also will a CPU fan be neccessary?

The Strix is a waste of money. The Prime X370-Pro is only $23 more and a much better board. If you want to go B350, buy the cheaper Prime B350-Plus. Paying nearly as much as an X370 board defeats the object.

This is the first time I'm building a PC myself, so I'm looking for input from more experienced people.
The PC will mainly be used for 1440p gaming.
I'm not going to OC, so I chose the 1600X over the 1600.
Obviously the CPU cooler is still missing. Logicalincrements says that a very cheap Deepcool Gammaxx400 would work fine for a build like this. Is that correct?

Get a cheaper mobo, you won't make use of this one nor the more expensive ones
Just get a 2666MHz kit from a known brand, higher frequency RAM has benefit but you won't see them in gaming with an RX 580. No need for a CPU fan unless you overclock, but why would you even?

I've got a 8gb ram in my pc right now. Is that still enough? I bought like last year after another power surge/outtage bombed the last one. So i wont bother updraging if I don't need to.
Though I'm wondering with a estimated 330W what UPS should I get? I'm uncertain which is nessecary. (Let me remind you i'm penny-wise)

Are GTX1080s going to get more expensive too?

I was planning on getting a 1070 at first, but they're barely cheaper than 1080s now, so I might as well get a 1080.
I'm going to start building in 3 weeks, so should I buy the GPU now to be safe?

ok /g/ after i did my research this is what im into

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/4Y88cc

now, do I NEED a cpu cooler? is a 600W PSU ok? Does the case matter?
>>
>>61103942
550w PSU totally good even for overclocking, no you don't need a CPU cooler unless you're overclocking
>>
>>61103942
>do I NEED a cpu cooler?
If you are asking if you need to use a cooler, yes. However, The 1600 is bundled with a pretty decent one.
>is a 600w psu ok?
yeah, more than enough. You can even go 550w and still have headroom. Make sure you get a quality unit though. And that doesn't mean go get a super expensive one either.
>does case matter?
not really, no. As long as it fits everything and has some room for air flow. Nicer cases tailor more towards cable management options, more hardware mounting like hard drive bays, radiator support, etc.

Noctua D15S, stock fan + 140mm Be Quiet Pure Wings
On an R7 1700 3.9GHz@1,38125v (stability test). It hits 70°C during stress test and is very very slowly climbing, is that normal? It's the default Prime95 stress test i'm doing, and x264 encoding when using all 16 threads (which happens a lot for me) heats more than the Prime95 default stress test, so i'm fairly sure there's something wrong with the temperatures right there no?

Want to buy a laptop with only one m.2 spot for storage and it supports nvme.

Are nvme worth it given I can only use one thing as storage? The laptop comes with a m.2 ssd which I'd sell to a friend and buy a 1tb nvme.
>>
>>61104073
70c at full tilt under an overclock is a good thing. Even if it's 80 you are fine.
you could try lowering voltage and /or setting a custom fan curve though.
>>
>>61102475
8GB was a meme since 3-4 years ago.
16GB is a meme today.

>>61104188
But it's a NH-D15s, how the hell is it reaching such high temperature? Isn't that thing among the best when it comes to dissipating heat?
>>
>>61104303
because it's prime 95 and video encoding. You want low temps, overclocking, AND full blast package stress load at the same time? You need water buddy. Or just accept that 80c during an encode is perfectly fine. It won't harm your chip.

yes it's god tier

seagate has a slightly exaggerated bad reputation because they sold damaged goods after a flood (so if you buy the right model it won't be as bad), but HGST still has a way better reliability according to the backblaze statistics. i found an enterprise HGST drive for cheap and it's been great for me so far, the only thing is that it's a bit loud when reading/writing a lot of data but it's not bothersome.

Is there anything else I need to check with PSUs other than wattage and build quality. What about compatibility?
>>
>>61104763
is it atx psu with an atx mobo? if yes you're good. the only "compatability" issues I could see are not having enough pcie plugs or sata plugs or something. 90% of people will just be using a single pcie plug and two sata plugs any way.
>>
>>61104793
Does it make a difference if the PSU's ATX and the mobo is micro-ATX? Thanks.
>>
>>61099048
So you really need a 650W PSU? I don't understand these things but you'll end up with less than 350W with your GPU added
>>
>>61104951
roughly speaking, erring on the side of having some headroom left over, 250W for the gpu, 200W for an overclocked cpu, 100W for the rest of the system, and taking into account that the psu will degrade over time, you'd be looking at a 550-650W psu
>>
>>61105105
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Tfgr8K
My build here will end up with less than 330W with gpu added. 550W should be perfectly fine right? I heard having a PSU to large ends up drawing more power than it needs/uses
>>
>>61104951
Switching power supplies are most efficient at 30-70% of their rated power.
