Everyone starts from somewhere and PHP is just as good as anything else. You need to learn the basics from somewhere. Also lots of companies use PHP so there's plenty of comfy well paying work available. I personally am not a fan of the language but then again, I write mainly back-end stuff using JavaScript which some people loathe, sometimes even with a reason. However it's good enough for our use case of thousands of requests per second and fun to develop.

Just do stuff that you like and try to learn something every day.

Thank you for the encouragement. I just can't help but feel that I'm lagging behind especially considering how younger people at work are far more qualified than I am. I'm also sort of afraid of stagnating or becoming a so-called "expert beginner" especially since I was put in charge of a project. It's hard to estimate yourself objectively.

I am this and even I managed to get an IT degree and get a servicedesk job. It was pretty hard sometimes (fuck subnetting, fuck programming) but worth it

Happiness is a mindset, almost anybody can be happy provided they create goals, detailed plans, work hard and have patience.

When you have a goal and a sensible roadmap in your mind, you can't wait to wake up to resume your work. Happiness comes from the meaningful (personally to you) achievements, when you get dem chemicals from your reward system from the results of your actions instead of porn/games/drugs/food.

also you'd be surprised what a single month of experience does compared to a semester of coursework, work experience is an order of magnitude more helpful than class. Learning PHP and whatnot is cool, even on your own time, but until you apply it somewhere in a live environment (like at work or for commercial use) then it takes a different form entirely
