What's the most important aspect when choosing a watch; how it looks, how people will perceive me, how exceptional the technology of the watch is, how productive of an investment it is?

Please help.
>>

You have to decide how in convenient the movement its

will it run to a dead stop in less than to days? need servicing, cost thousands of dollars

those are the signs of a good watch

It's the dive watch equivalent of the SARX033/35. Extremely high quality finish for an affordable price at some sacrifice to movement. The 6R15 is still an excellent movement though, it's not like there's much to complain about it.

It really is.
Seiko's been "upscaling" it recently too. The 3-500 dollar watches they put out now tend to have movements like the 4R35 these days.

I also like that it's low beat, meaning it really only "needs" servicing after 10 years.

I also like the looks of the watch in many ways, but it's around 1k, which for me is a tipping point where I might have to consider saving up for an actual upscale watch.

After I get my Rolex/Omega fix, what should I aim for once I am retired + have fuckloads of money?

Vacheron looks alright, though I'm curious about the Royal Oaks. Pateks looks alright though it definitely looks like a grandpa watch. Kind of have an eye out for a good looking A Lange. Are those any good?
>>
>>61092270
That Rolex is upside down on his wrist. Looks like his right hand, correct?
>>
>>61096381
Qt.

Couple of questions though about the quality since it can be weird. Do hands properly align? How's the lume?
>>
>>61096952
ALS is arguably the best non-independent. Divine finishing, diverse aesthetic options, the list could go on.
>>
>>61096952
Short answer is it depends on how much you want to spend.

Lange runs all over basically any other large manufacturer at the moment - would definitely take a modern production Lange over a modern production AP, pp, or VC.

You could also look at smaller independent manufacturers - journe, MB&f, urban jurgenson, etc. Even further along this spectrum are patronage watches from folks like Kari, Smith, or dufour.

Finally there's ultra high complications. Greubel Forsey is the obvious prototype here, but there's also ultra high complications from jlc, VC, van Cleef, bregeut, and any number of other small shops.
>>

The older Explorers with painted indices are beautiful too but they're just too old and crusty now. They're expensive and just not suited to being daily wearers, the 114270 has a sapphire crystal and a modern movement and lume that isn't faded.

>>61103930
5 lines of text isn't even that bad for a Rolex, unfortunately.

The 224 (and I guess maybe 2241/2242? Hadn't heard of these) is a quartz movement that uses the signal from a quartz crystal to drive a tuning fork, which in turn uses pawls to push an index wheel. It's basically an Accutron 218 (which is similar to the classic spaceview 214) but instead of the tuning fork keeping time, quartz keeps time and the tuning fork is just part of the drive shaft. It also uses a different frequency and as such has different tooth counts in the gear train.

It also uses a different frequency and as such has different tooth counts in the gear train.
interesting i guess

Well, I hear Omega watches have 8 serial numbers later, correct?

This one happens to have 7 and starts at a 4, would this happen to be a 1907-1912 watch? Furthermore was there a time omega had only 7 serials? Just curious for authenticity.

Case was built I believe after the movement, a lot of them try to use different parts with higher movement serials than cases and those actually turn out to be frankenmegas (fakes).

the motivation is i ordered a dial with shitty design so i removed the design and now have to etch it so i can fill it with lume without it looking like complete shit. if it doesn't work ill just order another dial. >>
>>61111434
So long as nobody calls the police on me for wearing the crown on the wrong side.

Sinn is the quintessential tool watch brand, and they have a bunch of models with the crown on that side.
Other brands like Seiko move the crown more towards the 4 o'clock position, so it's safe to say that the crown digging into your hand is indeed a legit concern.

I don't know why convention says the crown has to be on the right anyway, you're not supposed to be using the crown with the watch on the wrist ever. It stresses the stem and related gears.
>>
>>61111384
how are you going to perfectly cut the date square out?
>>
>>61111500
>The crown should point to your wrist

>>61111508
>I don't know why convention says the crown has to be on the right anyway, you're not supposed to be using the crown with the watch on the wrist ever. It stresses the stem and related gears.

yeah you are, to set it and to quickjust the date for months that don't have 31 days. As it is you will have to awkwardly reach across it like leftys do with normal watches
>>
>>61111525
So you can wind it while wearing it... But I don't see the problem of wearing it on the other side. just what fits best for you
>>
>>61111525
>>The crown should point to your wrist

>>
>>61111545
>So you can wind it while wearing it...
>>61111540

You're not supposed to use the crown with the watch on your wrist. You're very likely to stress the winding stem and gears.

>>61111552

only 2 have the crown on the left anon and those are unusual watches

as for your watch from tudor's website:

>In a nod to its past, the new TUDOR Pelagos evokes the brand’s history of dive watches designed specifically for left-handed professional divers. During the 1970s, the French Navy commissioned bespoke models for it’s left-handed divers.

wear it however you want, wear it on your dick, I don't care. It's a left handed watch though, just saying. I am not giving you shit I am just pointing out that rolex and tudorfags will ask you why you are wearing it on the wrong hand

I was really torn between the North Flag and Ranger, so somehow in the end I decided on the Explorer instead. They're all really nice.

With the way Tudor is doing I hope they stick around for a long time and keep making cool new stuff. Modernizing classic Rolex designs is a lot more interesting than what they were doing before the brand got rebooted. But then again if they ever properly remake the snowflake subs with the square indices then I'll be sold instantly.

Honestly I still don't get what's so fucking magical about glow in the dark paint, but every time I walk into a dark room I have to gawk at it like a retard and it never gets old.
>>
>>61115786

Consider future servicing costs.

A Lange and Patek are not fun when it comes to that.

Choose between Rolex and JLC.

JLC ultra thin is one of the most underrated high end pieces.
>>
>>61115828
JLC sounds nice considering. Could use a true dress watch
>>
>>61115816
well said.. i find myself wondering the same thing.
>>
>>61111446
God damn I hate those ugly straps.
Worst trend to ever happen to watches
>>
How much does it cost to get a watch oiled?
>>
>>61117710
A Seiko is under 200 bucks or something, same for a generic ETA at an independent watchmaker, an upmarket but common watch like a Rolex is 5-800, and high-end watches are expensive as fuck.
>>
>>61117754
So it'd be cheaper to buy a new one? It's a Raketa, they're $20 on ebay (yes, they're mechanical)
>>
Is there such thing as a Seiko model list / reference?

I would like to buy a vintage Seiko, but the models I could find are all a bit small for my taste / wrist (35-36mm).

Are there any vintage dress Seikos with size between 38-41mm? I know large watches only recently became popular, but it's worth a shot to ask.
>>
>>61110523
It won't last you forever, especially the shitty strap it comes with.
>>
What are brands that make a quality product for under 200?
Also has anyone bought watches from Massdrop or even heard of Massdrop before? They have some cool stuff sometimes but they often way overblow the original MSRP when showing off their deals.
>>
>>61118653
>What are brands that make a quality product for under 200?
Japanese brands of which you've already heard.
>Also has anyone bought watches from Massdrop or even heard of Massdrop before?
Their deals are usually shit.
>>
>>61118330
No, I'm afraid you'll have to get some taste.
>>
>>61118330
Seiko 6245 is either 37 or 38 mm last I checked. Good luck finding one in good condition though.
>>
If you buy a new watch off chrono24 with box and papers, do you get the warranty?

Hey /g/entleman

I need your help finding a watch for my 21 birthday:

>automatic
>less than 250€ (180-200€ is ideal)
>durable. (Maybe a submariner?)
>long minute hands if possible
>no SKX007, no Seiko 5 if possible

I have been thinking on Orient Blue Ray II.

However, I don't like the fact that minute hand is too short.

Is there a submariner with long hands under my specifications?
>>
>>61119912
If you're okay with chink quality you could ask Tiger concepts to whip you up something custom.
>>
>>61119912
>submariner

Excuse my bad use of horologic terminology.

I was making reference to "diver" watches, not submariners

My bad
>>
>>61119912
Honestly even if it sounds like a tired meme in these threads, the SKX is legitimately the highest quality option in that price range. If you don't like the Ray then I assume you looked at the Mako also? The Casio MDV-106 is another good option for cheap shitter divers, but it's quartz and you said automatic. Seiko also has some other cheap divers like the monster or the new turtle models or the SKX173 which maybe you'll like better than the 007. The G-shock divers are supposed to be good, they're digital quartz though. Above your price range your options open up a whole lot with microbrands or entry level Swatch stuff.

Thinking about getting a ONE AND DONE Rolex

116000 36mm blue

Thing is I'm saving to buy a house

I might be retarded and buy it on credit because then it will feel like I'm slowly getting the watch "for free"

Basically the Rolex OP would be about a month's after tax wages for me

I could have this beautiful Rolex and then buy shitters here and there for variety

I really prefer the blue OP to the Explorer I black dial

< not my wrist
>>
>>61120820
Whoever threw out the original movement should be shot.
>>
>>61120797

my apologies but I thought the Pelagos was about 75% of the used price

it's still a great watch either way
>>
Do high-end watchmakers who use ETA movements actually add anything to them (aside from cometics) to increase accuracy or reliability ?

>>61092244
>>61092270
more watch ads pls, I love these but I've never saved them :'(
>>

>>
>>61096963

>>
>>61120869
I just bought a house, and I'd also like to buy one watch to last me a lifetime.
The fancy house I'm in and my age (35) don't suit my green alpinist anymore.

Was looking at a Pelagos. Near Rolex quality (especially with the movement) without the Rolex garishness and snobbery.
>>
>>61121708

Yeah, because your neighbours are going to look at what kind of watch you wear. What are you going to do next, buy a Ferrari? Handmade shoes? Designer clothing?
>>
>>61121867
What's that about my neighbors?
>>
>>61120869

Why buy on credit? Don't be that retarded. You can buy them in payment installments, like over two years, but even that is kinda stupid.
>>
>>61121881

>The fancy house I'm in and my age (35) don't suit my green alpinist anymore.

What the hell is wrong with hand made shoes?
t. 27-year old
>>
>>61122447
Aren't they all handmade? I thought you just paid $60 for ones made by little brown hands and $600 for old white ones
>>
>>61122447

Nothing is wrong with it, but if this guy feels his watch isn't good enough for his house then I'm sure his regular peasant shoes won't survive either.
>>
>>61122561

Hand made by little brown hands is cut with a press and assembled like lego. Handmade by cobblers are made with a last, usually from the wearer's foot, and custom made to fit that last. Have you even seen a pair of handmade, custom shoes be made? It's the same thing as buying a suit jacket from Walmart and buying a handmade suit by a master tailor. Watch Rory Duffy's series on YouTube.
>>
>>61121914

it's psychology

I have $60k US in my investment account (just saying, not pretending to be a millionaire), technically I can easily afford this Rolex

it would be a way of buying it and obscuring the cost
>>
>>61122770

If you could easily afford this Rolex it wouldn't be a big deal to buy it cash, yet you're wanting to hide the cost and buy on credit.
>>
>>61122562
>this guy feels his watch isn't good enough for his house
Wearing a 10k watch while renting a cheap 1 bedroom apartment is odd.

Conversely, wearing a cheap shitter while living in a stately mansion is also odd.

Stop having autism.
>>
>>61122888

Why would it be odd? You see CEO's wearing swatches.
>>
>>61120955
>Do high-end watchmakers who use ETA movements actually add anything to them (aside from cometics) to increase accuracy or reliability ?

Breitling and Tudor are notable for modifying ETA movements to make them better. IWC does too but they charge fucking Rolex prices which is ridiculous.
>>
Any good vostok watches with a leather strap, modern or vintage
>>
>>61123453
No.
>>
>>61122888
>Conversely, wearing a cheap shitter while living in a stately mansion is also odd.
I live in Boca Raton FL and I can not tell you how many filthy rich people I know who wear shitters

it's just not their hobby, they don't care

Any watch they have to wind or can't put down for 48 hours without having to fool with it and set it is an annoyance to them
>>
>>61124089
>I live in Boca Raton FL and I can not tell you how many filthy rich people I know who wear shitters
Did I say it doesn't happen?
Of course it does. But it's odd.

>>61122974
And it's odd.
You see CEOs wearing sneakers too. That's also odd.
>>
>>61124185

It's not odd, people like what they like. Guy came into my work the other day and said he's got a Rolex and it costs a lot of money and doesn't even tell the right time half the time. Sign of an idiot who thinks Rolex is cool and had to get one. It's like all these YouTubers who make videos saying they bought a Rolex and can't even change the time and have to bring it to a dealer to have it wound and set when it stops.
>>
>>61124393
>It's not odd
Yes it is.
>>
>>61124412

So a guy who saves up his money and buys a Rolex cash is odd and a guy with 60k in investments who wants to buy a Rolex on credit isn't?
>>
>>61120869
Watches are cool and all but don't forget that this is an absolutely useless fetish toy for autists only slightly more respectable than a fucking fidget spinner, and you're planning on dropping thousands of dollars on it. Surely it's not something you would actually go into debt for, right? Just fucking pay for it outright if you want it, buying worthless shit on credit is why the poor stay poor.

Also don't buy a fucking Air-King get an Explorer or something actually cool.
>>
>>61124185
>Of course it does. But it's odd.
no it's not

once you have money you don't have to buy trinkets to show you have money

The guy who runs my company sold a previous company when he was 28 and walked away with like $5,000,000. He said the first thing he did was go to a dealer and buy a Rolex Submariner.

he never wears it, he says it's pretentious and he does not like having to keep it wound

fucker wears some euro made quartz digital i have never heard of but looked up once, it's a $150 watch
>>
>>61124573
>So a guy who saves up his money and buys a Rolex cash is odd
If his housing situation is shit, but he saves up for an expensive watch, yes.

>and a guy with 60k in investments who wants to buy a Rolex on credit isn't?
I have no idea what you mean by this.
I was talking about actual rich people wearing cheap shitters. It's just odd.
And I'm not talking about shitters that make some sense either, like an SKX or gshock.
>>
>>61124607
He also took a flight to red square in Moscow and ate a $500 little serving of caviar, he flew there and back just for that, cost him a couple grand

he said he stopped wasting money after that but he had always wanted to eat caviar in red square so whatevez
>>
>>61124607
Again; did I say it doesn't happen? No.

It's just odd to have tons of money, but then buy a shitter that looks like a fancy watch but is made as cheaply as possible.
>>
>>61124611
>I was talking about actual rich people wearing cheap shitters. It's just odd.
What's odd is a $100,000 solid gold tribulon (however you spell it) is literally a worse watch in every way than a digital

it's like you thinking they are weird for not riding horses
>>
>>61124636
>It's just odd to have tons of money, but then buy a shitter that looks like a fancy watch but is made as cheaply as possible.

the watch he wears does not look fancy, it looks like a casio quartz lcd

also whenever he buys a new computer he takes a screwdriver and pops the caps lock key off, which i find hilarious
