>>
>>61077497
Eh, I probably wouldn't wish it on you for $40. You're probably better of saving for something better.

It's workable but pretty sluggish, even running Xubuntu. It can do 480p youtube videos no problem, which really on it's screen isn't too bad. Other than that it's fine for shitposting and general browsing if you don't mind being confined to a few tabs and certain sites taking a bit longer to load than others. One huge problem that's been plaguing it for years (regardless of OS) is sometimes the wireless card doesn't activate on booting and it needs to be restarted.

I upgraded the processor to a 2.33 GHz Core 2 (the fastest its mobo could take) last year but recently wanted the SSD I put inside it for something else. Once I put its old HDD back in the battery life went to complete shit again. Another consequence of changing the CPU is that it hits this weird BIOS protection screen that it has to just sit at for about 45 seconds upon every boot, quite annoying when you need to restart it 3-4 times sometimes just to get the wireless working. The only thing it really has going for it still is it's keyboard and clitmouse.

For me, it's photo editing with really big photos and an autoblogging script I run for my affiliate marketing stuff that builds 30 sites at a time. Both of those use every bit of 16gb of RAM.
For normies, it's just another level of future "proofing" for your device to support as much RAM as possible.
>>
New chassis ThinkPads are all garbage. The true cutoff point was the xx30 generation, at least you could swap out the keyboard if you really really wanted to. Anything later is fucking trash, its when the women took over and started cost cutting and getting rid of nice innovative things like the ThinkLight which is miles better than a backlit keyboard.

Its not underrated, there's a reason its so cheap. Nobody wants it. Hasn't that occurred to you?

All you need to do is install the correct driver and then blacklist it from ever being updated by Windows.

As far as I know, it works right out of the box with Linux now.

It's not that I'm going to notice how slow it is
It's just I really don't care for the bump from 900 to 1080 and I don't care much for the ips viewing angles are or colors.
My trash T430 screen is good enough for me and my T430 costs a third less than any T440 variant or x240.

I don't have anything against the xx40 series (except for f keys) it's just I feel like I'm paying too much for not a lot more

But anon, IPS for a laptop is one of the most important things, I'd say
If you use your laptop in not perfect conditions(like on a table) IPS helps a lot
>>
>>61087197
yeah when the oleophobic coating can be worn to a point where body oils damage the keys i wouldnt trust it with a spill. The 'Book took a coffee cup to the face and still doesnt get grease stains for the trackpad and keyboard.

Why the fuck would you put the trackpad in upside down

I bought a refurb T440P about 2 weeks ago for $220 on ebay, got a $45 1080p IPS screen replacement with better color than stock.

Seriously guise, don't pay an extra $200 for a crappier IPS, the replacement is incredibly easy. Unsnap the bezel, 4 screws, and one cable.

Decent laptop, and battery life is okay if you replace them. With the extended battery, I get around 8 hours of work. It can theoretically last up to 14 hours, but I've never had the need to go without a charge that long.

Replaced the TouchPad immediately after I got it, and it has been my go to laptop since. Added an extra 250GB SSD to the m.2 socket that normally houses a mobile modem for LTE.

The machine is absolutely silent, and even under load won't get very loud.

I have the i7 meme dual core processor and 12GBs of RAM with 2 SSDs. Though it's by no means a fast machine in terms of raw power, and makes sacrifices in performance in favor of battery life, weight, and noise. Autodesk Fusion and AutoCAD seems to run well, but I haven't modeled anything serious on my laptop. It has trouble running Lightroom for some reason, though it runs other RAW editors just fine. Because of this, I usually do heavy work on my desktop and shitpost on my laptop.

It runs light games fine, like FTL. More performance heavy games, like CS:GO run at below 60 FPS on the lightest settings at any resolution. This is not a laptop for heavy tasks, but I didn't expect it to be. If you want this to be a mobile gaming rig, look somewhere else.

Keyboard is the best laptop keyboard currently available, but that doesn't really say much considering the current market. I'll be looking at the Retro ThinkPad when more news arrives.

All the pros and cons considered, I would still recommend this laptop. It is extremely reliable, and not once had I ran out of battery during the day. I mainly use it to browse the web, type emails, edit photos on the go, and talk on Discord and it does that job perfectly well.

And people still shitpost about "loonix".
>>
>>61089369
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Loonix, is in fact, GNU/Loonix, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Loonix. Loonix is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Loonix", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Loonix, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Loonix is the colonel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The colonel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by himself; he can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Loonix is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Loonix added, or GNU/Loonix. All the so-called "Loonix" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Loonix.

I've had it for almost two years now. I'm currently getting an engineering masters, so I needed something with plenty of ports and a long battery life that I could use to program with. It's honestly the best computer I've ever "invested in", considering I got it for around $400 plus the cost of the IPS panel (~80 bucks), 500GB SSD, Extra RAM, and three-button trackpad. I dual-boot windows and arch on this thing and everything has just been a breeze.

I bought one of the extended batteries as well. The cool thing about the t44x series and up is that they have hot-swappable batteries, since they have internal 3-cell battery packs underneath the palm rest. Windows and Linux both show two battery level indicators.

The keyboard is fantastic. I have the non-backlit one, which I prefer since I don't need to look down at the keys in the dark anyway and this one has a much better texture. The key travel and response is also miles better than any other laptop I've used, including the Dell XPS and the 2013/2015/2016 Macbook Pros.

This thing has never failed me, even when I dropped it around 10 times due to a backpack with a poor zipper design. It was no problem, since parts were readily available online. For under 100 bucks, I was able to buy a replacement back cover, top cover, and palm rest.

Not trying to convince anyone to buy it, but when I told my friends this, four of them followed suit and bought the same model or the t450s. They love theirs as well. If you're looking for a cheap and reliable laptop that only really needs a couple of upgrades to be a comfortable main machine, then look no further.

Regardless, there's really nothing else that will fit there. The internal battery actually lies on top of that, so they managed their space pretty well.
>>
>>61080377
the t440 also has a garbage trackpad and no real buttons for the trackpoint. synaptics drivers are somehow now garbage from lenovo, even on the newer models - the newest mouse drivers for my X1 Yoga gen1 cause WMI to go 100% CPU usage. I had to disable the trackpoint because, despite the button being fine and not pressed (checked under the key, clean, no spills, etc.) it was scrolling constantly
>>
>>61080377
>There's a reason its so cheap

It's cheap cause it's old. The xx30 generation of laptops are even cheaper.

At least the newer xx40 machines are compatible with xx50,60,70, and soon 80 docks/batteries/keyboards.
