Aero really was beautiful, and Windows 7 further refined it from Vista. But, I like where Microsoft is heading with their Fluid design. I think it's a good compromise between flat and transparency.

Win 7 user for life man. Standards ain't gonna change anytime soon as to make it obsolete. I got spare ram/cpu/mobo/graphics card in case i need parts. ATX PSU standard will still be with us long long time, Sata will to (bus speed will increase but it'll all be backward compatible just like now plug sata III drive into sata I port and it work thanks to jumper setting). IF MS wants to go back to pure flat look they should've just gone back to the Win 9x/2000 desktop. But hey whatever.

Windows 7: A fuckton of themes and whatever you could want with em

Windows 8.1: Plenty of themes as well, but now the file explorer has been changed so you have to restore it back to what Windows 7 had

Windows 10: People make themes for it, but I don't know why, since updates break them over, and over, and over, and over, and over. It's pointless and it's frustrating.

In a way sort of similar to macOS, except in older versions of macOS it wasn't patching some obscure system files, there was software for theming. Now there isn't because SIP and people don't want to produce software that requires disabling a feature like that.

With KDE up until last year on my 280x I couldn't legit get that shit to work fast if I enabled vsync at all. It was sluggish, animations would work poorly under open source drivers which everyone love and admire.

With anything that used Compiz it was a mess. Because I would have to point out that X application should also use vsync on the settings and for some reason Chromium was listed with a different name under the settings manager, so it would never enable it despite it being there. So basically even Ubuntu gave me issues there.

And on XFCE I would have to use Compton, otherwise enabling vsync would only affect the desktop as well while leaving every other application unaffected.

I legit cannot stand the font rendering on modern versions of Windows, but options like gdipp or mactype end up being worse due to either incompatibility with some software (specially web browsers) or poor kerning (mactype has this issue and reading a long text on it is nauseating).

Do not classic, that's it. As long as you have Aero (or whatever custom theme), it's on. If your task manager has dwm.exe, then it means your desktop is GPU accelerated, which classic doesn't use.

There is nothing wrong with putting files on desktop while you're working. Just clean up afterwards like you would on a physical desk. Icons on desktop are a pain however, because you could easily click and drag them into a folder when you're cleaning up.
