Linux SUCKS. Why? Because:

1) Command lines/Lack of GUI's

Why the fvck would I want to use a command line? I have a modern computer, capable of displaying color and icons. Why should their be a command line? And further, why doesn't everything have a gui? Gui's are good, and easy, and don't require me to learn commands. Yey for Gui's.

2)Root/sudo is stupid.

Why on earth should I have to deal with either using sudo or running as root to actually use my programs? I still can't get a lot of programs to run because they keep whining about permissions. What ever happened to good old admin accounts? Why does sudo break everything?

3)Apt-get

Now this is just plane stupid. Why is it so damn hard to install anything? I have a desktop, why not do it the way it should be done? I get the installer icon, click on it, press forward a few times, wait, and have a nice icon on my desktop. Why isn't it done this way?

4)Compiling

Again, stupid. Just give me a fvcking installer program. None of this compiling sh1t.

Come on Linux. The rest of the world has moved beyond 1990. It's time for you to do so also. I'm giving up and installing windows.

>>
>>61059116
So what you are currently doing is basically the same as having /home on a separate partition, except that your configuration files will be lost if you wipe /. In other words, you already understand the benefits of keeping your data and your OS on separate partitions; add to that the idea of saving your personal settings together with the rest of your data, and you understand the benefits of keeping /home on a separate partition.

Sup /g/

A year back I switched to Ubuntu because I didn't want to download 4+ GBs Windows ISO. Got a new laptop with Windows 10 this year but downloaded enough porn to not want to format and go back to Linux. Also this laptop had an AMD graphics card (M330) along with integrated Intel one so I am not sure if the drivers will be available. Yesterday there was a thread about having a Windows vm in Qemu that had access to graphics memory and worked with 99.5% efficiency according to the anon who said that so I can play games too. Just googled and found that my controller, Logitech F310, wouldn't have any problem running on Linux. Should I make the move? Is there anything that might not work?
>>
>>61059237
If you don't store any big files on your home directoy yourself, the biggest thing there will probably be your browser's cache or something like that. I'd say a few hundred MB, so one GB should be a safe ceiling value. But I wouldn't recommend keeping /home on a separate partition for that kind of usage. I say, either keep it separate and use it to store your media, or keep it in the same partition as / and just take care to back up any settings you care about yourself (or automate it).
>>
>>61059315

>>
>>61059345
Will probably go for Debian. And thats not a reply to what I asked.
>>
>>61059328
Eh, steam installs to your home directory too.
>>
>>61059315
99.5% efficiency sounds fully contrived to me.
>>
>>61059370
you can move your steam library (where the games at) to anywhere you have write permissions and you can have more steam library locations, just like in windows.
>>
>>61059328
Actually, I take that back. Unless I were really constrained for space, I'd still keep /home on a separate partition - what's 1GB in exchange for safely keeping all your configuration between reinstalls? I did put it all in one single partition in one of those old eeePCs that only have a 4GB SSD.

>>61059370
That's another wonderful reason to mount /home on some big partition, but if that is not possible a symlink should fix it. That notwithstanding,

I feel as if I would learn more from reading:
>Debian GNU/Linux FAQ 165p
>Debian Installation Guide 398p
>The Debian Administrator's Handbook 1106p
And then installing Debian unstable/testing.
Compared to simply installing Ubuntu GNOME LTS and not really understanding as much
>ubuntu manual 167 pages

Is it silly for me to think I'd have more freedom and learn more how linux works if I go with debian?
I'm not sure what to do. I don't even have any understanding of an os other than the very basics I just want to educate myself and the documentation on the official debian site looks like a practical way to go about it. Anything I should read beforehand? Read about 50 pages of "How Linux Works" but I just feel like I'd be covering the same ground if I continue.

Yes. For best results, rather than just ^C ^V you should use some method that you can trust to keep all file attributes (read the cp man page, or use rsync, a tar pipe, etc), but yes.

>>61059563
You'll have more freedom in the ethical sense with Debian because it keeps free and non-free software separate and easily allows you to achieve a fully-free OS.

As for learning, no big difference, although I find that Ubuntu uses many fancy shmancy abstraction layers that actually make the system harder to understand and configure, whereas in Debian I just edit the same old text files that have been in use for ages. But, basically, you'll learn as much as you're motivated to, with any distro.

Pardon me for one moment. What you are calling Linux, is in actuality, GNU/Linux, or as I have nicknamed it, GNU plus Linux. Linux isn't an operating system by itself, but it is just another part of the GNU system, which has been extended in functionality via various GNU components (including GNU's shell utilities and corelibs) which only then fit the definition of a complete operating system as outlined by POSIX.

There are many people today who are running the GNU operating system without even being aware of it. Through a strange turn of events, a misnomer has emerged where people refer to a widely used version of the GNU system as "Linux", unaware that the proper name for the system they run is the GNU operating system.

Now while they are in fact using Linux, it is only one component of the system that they run. Linux is used as the kernel: the part of an operating system which distributes a machine's resources to other programs which request them. While this functionality is essential for the successful functioning of a system, it cannot function on its own, it needs an operating system within which it can carry out its functions. Linux is commonly paired with the GNU operating system: the entirety of the system is GNU with the addition of Linux, or GNU/Linux. Every single "Linux Distribution" is actually a distribution of GNU/Linux.

If you only format C: and install Linux on it, other partitions are not gonna disappear. You can mount them and use them (using ntfs-3g).
Just make sure you don't wipe them during installation by mistake.

If you mean exactly that, you still need to configure your network. If I'm not mistaken, wpa_supplicant associates you with a WPA access point but you still need to set up your network interface - use dhclient if the network uses DHCP, ifconfig/ip otherwise.

If you used tome higher-level wrapper that should have taken care of everything, maybe post the output of route, ifconfig, and the contents of /etc/resolv.conf as that other anon said.

You could do this while you figure that out:

Run "ifconfig", see if "lo" is the only interface that shows up or there are more. For reference, "ifconfig -a" shows all your interfaces - any interface missing from the output of plain ifconfig is currently down. dhclient is a client for the DHCP protocol, which is used to automagically obtain an IP address and other basic network configuration. With a GUI tool this is usually integrated in the same process as associating with the access point, so the fact that they're separate things may be understandably counter-intuitive to you.

read this
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/I3

ignore the fact that it's for a superior distribution. it contains a lot of information about i3 and how it is invoked. notice that arch probably does some things that you might have to do manually.
