Is he right /g/?
>>
In the very early days of the internet, yes.
15-20 years ago, no.

Look up archives of what the web used to be like. Textfiles.com is a good example, there are tons of older bbs archives from the early 90s too.

The internet was a barren and harsh land. You had to be savvy to even access it, and the barrier of entry was far too high for any normies. It naturally attracted people with extreme views, so people accessing it came across extreme views. Its true that originally the internet was only academics, but that didn't last. As soon as people outside of universities started getting dial up modems it was flooded with underground elements, and that became the nature of the internet itself. You spoke about things, and read things there that you would not see or hear elsewhere. It was overtly hostile to normies with narrow perceptions of the world.
Really all the shock imagery, porn, and hostility associated with the image of 4chan being the "internet hate machine" is a direct extension of what the spirit of early internet embodied.

It wasn't a place most people would like, and if you didn't like it, you didn't belong there.
>>
>>61051707
how delusional is he
he literally described the internet how it was pre aol and eternal fall

>tons of undergrad nerds

The dude is full of shit, just look at old Usenet posts or bbs

Oh, and malware was as common as fish in water back then too.

It's what liberals do: Rewrite history and pretend they were the ones who were always right.
>>
>>61051707
The internet became 4chan with the invention of BBS. Suddenly, after people realized they're practically anonymous, people started trolling each other.

Good days

the reigning theory is that if you convince everyone through media you control that people who question x are crazy, you can fuck with x.
People like to shit on people, and are ultimately controlled and molded mentally by the media that they're always tethered to the hip to, so if the media over time influences people to shit on people who question x, you can fuck with x and most people won't question it due to fear of being called crazy.
>>
>>61051707
This site was a lot closer to that as well, "where smart people go to act dumb." No one here would remember that though, as you all showed up in 2006 or later.
>>
>>61051707
lol what? pretty much as soon as email was invented you had flame wars.

so if anything shitposting is the oldest internet profession.

>4chan is neo-Nazis, pedos, misogynists, cyber terrorists, KKK, script kiddies, and retards
NO. We were merely PRETENDING. Then it attracted people who WEREN'T. Fucking Ernest fucking newfag.
>>
>>61051707
Lol no. As others have mentioned, only like 40 years ago was the internet populated by academics and the like.

During the 80s and 90s it was really really a sort of wild West and attracted a lot of curious, adventurous, and sometimes "extreme" people. Also a ton of outcasts that found a home on the net.

You could find anything, or anyone, good or bad.
>>
>>61052030
Also a good example of how the internet was, or actually, felt, was the deep web before it got seized by the FBI.

same as it ever was, except now that the internet has grown up and there are more corners to hide in. people don't realize there are opposing views for a while, and then they're surprised to see it.
>>
>>61051707
Yes, as one of the founders of the internet this is true.

Very few people here in /g/ were on the internet before AOL happened. I'm in my mid-30's and started using the internet in 1996. That's 3 years after AOL users started flooding Usenet in 1993. Most people here weren't even born before 1993, much less using the internet. I don't know exactly what year AOL branched out from their internal network outward into the actual internet, but I imagine it was some time between 93 and 96.

I miss the old days of chat room trolling, I met a cute girl on some Yahoo chatroom who lived like half an hour from me. We talked and did some awkward teenaged cybersexing allot on aim and email and always talked about meeting up when I got a car.

But then once I got a car I just kind of realized why drive half an hour for pussy when I would be passing a million pussies on the way there.

I found a few pictures of her a couple weeks ago going through a bunch of old backup disks and totally regret not smashing the hell out of that pussy.

It's a site full of smug, self-assured liberals with an obsene level of arrogance. Every piece of startup advice offered is at it's heart common sensical, wrapped in a veneer of vagueness. Political questions are ambushed by literal Hillary voters with tired strawman arguments, and if you call them out they call you a dumb conservative and are backed up by their fellow users

It's the reddit version of yahoo answers

Why do Americans cum in socks?
>>
>>61052394
Cause our dicks arent tiny and we can use the coak to masterbate with as well as catch the ejaculate when we cum.We then throw the sock in the hamper for cleaning the next day with out other clothes
>>
>>61051825
This didn't start until the early 2000s. Late 90s internet was pretty safe as was mid 90s AOL.

>4chan being the "internet hate machine"
Moot made 4chan to get away from the internet hate machine, ironically enough. A lot of stuff people attribute to 4chan was SA, with maybe 4chan being followers / hangers on due to cross posting.

why is it the way we've talked to each other changed and how do we go back

The "grownups" who started the Internet, started it during a time when anti-Communism was sky-high; which means they were poeple standing against Communist ideals such as feminism, LGBTPQBBQ, some were klan members or at least qualified to be such, fighting against USSR required malware writers, spying, cyber criminals by today's standards, and the military always had a thing with sexual deviancy in its midst such as pedophilia as did many academics.
So the neckbeard in the pic doesn't know shit about the human condition, let alone basic history.
>>
>>61051707
It's impossible to refute an argument constructed primarily of buzzwords that have no set definition because whenever you make a counterpoint the meaning of the argument changes.
For instance, neo-Nazi used to have a very specific meaning that was generally applied to people who would label themselves as Nazis. Today, however, the same label is applied to people who simply wish to, say, restrict immigration. Arguments against mass-immigration are typically met with accusations of neo-Nazi-ism after all. Given that restricting immigration used to be a liberal talking point, even if the internet used to be filled with liberals it could be said that the internet was also filled with people who fall under the modern definition of neo-Nazi. If you presented this counter to the individual pictured, they would likely reply that you are wrong, and switch back to the "classic" definition of neo-Nazi solely for the sake of dismissing the argument, in spite of the fact that they are almost certainly using the modern definition now.
In short, that person is a retard and so are you.

The Internet was originally a military project. So of course there was no general access.

It's amusing how 'engineers, academics, and military people' is seemingly a group that has no overlap with nazis, pedos, cyber criminals, malware writers etc.

Like, who the fuck do you think wrote malware if not those who knew how to program?

Jesus christ

Play JFK reloaded.
It's perfectly possible to shoot the president from the texas book depository. Hell, I've managed trick shots where I popped the guy literally a fraction of a second before his car turns around the corner.

I think it's a bit weird how he waited until the car was leaving since there was an easier shot as the car was approaching the building.

Reading through that thread the people are discussing the underlying hardware in a rather civil manner.
4chan today has the usual [AMD|INTEL] BTFO AND BANKRUPT threads, same today, same tomorrow.

Reading through old text files you can see that people used to explain their ideas (the files are far longer), whereas now you get two sentences of shit posting that could largely be copied and pasted amongst threads without loss of context.
>>
>>61054848
the internet had more educated people populating the bbs's ie no minorities unless they were educated and not shitposting from a 2 bedroom apartment while living with their single mother

Does anyone know a slang term for the day AOL made internet public, I could have swore there was a word like "J-Day" or something, I ask because there's a timer somewhere on the internet that counts time since that launch as well as some archived posts about people being worried about, essentially, normies flooding in in a few days.
>>
old 4chan wasn't even like nu-4chan.

old internet has more in common with old 4chan than either has with either's modern version.

>>61052004
it's closer to say, old 4chan hated anyone defining themselves as ANYTHING permanent or innate
new 4chan hates everyone else who doesn't share their own carved in stone self-definition

we've gone from being the guy who jokes about everyone and can pull it off, to the guy who's ready to throw punches when the words "flyover country" or "steers and queers" come out but still has hot takes about fried chicken
