I'd guess you mean MS-DOS? It had Microsoft behind it. At the beginning it was no better than CP/M it was rivaling with.

Consumer retro systems like DOS are pretty much rubbish and consist of ideas were outdated when they were first released.
The interesting systems are those that were on the cutting edge but never caught on for whatever reason. You can use Plan9 or Open Genera today and get a sense that things really would have been better if they were what today's infrastructure was based on.
