My HDD (HGST Travelstar model HTS721010A9E630 pictured to the left) has bad blocks and get write errors whenever I try and download anything onto it.

I tried defragmenting it, but it didn't help. The SMART status says back-up and replace so I bought a new hard drive.

But the question is: Should I back the files up onto the new hard drive or go through the process of recovering the information?

Some of the things I have downloaded onto my HDD don't work now so I don't know whether I should do a simple back up, download recovery software, or actually get the data professionally recovered from a company.

My OS is on my SSD so my computer does still function, and the hard drive isn't completely trashed.

What should I do /g/?

If you can read the drive, backup your shit nigger.

>buy new drive
>install OS on new drive
>copy shit to new drive

HGST laptop drives are SHIIIIT, but so are most other drives. Get a SSD.

Just had an SSD fail after like 5 months in my laptop, conversely I've never had a problem with any of my traditional laptop drives

forget about stuff you can't read

you should prioritize things and act like any read operation is potentially the last one before the drive kicks the bucket

what is the most important thing? copy that first. what's the next most important thing? copy that next. and so on till the drive dies, or you're done copying everything.

if the drive dies, at least you've got the most important stuff out

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
