Half of the year, I couldn't keep up with any of the classes because my grasp of Japanese wasn't strong enough. It also took me a few months to be able to hang out with my friends and chat with them coloquially, because at first my way of speaking was super bookish.
I lost a lot of weight that I had worked hard to gain in America (former lanklet, now /fit/), which pissed me off, and food was too expensive to eat more than what my host family provided me. I couldn't go to gym or anything either.
But it was fun, and worth it because I can read muh mangos now, and ironically being forced to use a shitty laptop over there is actually what got me into Debian and Linux in general, and got me to kick my gaming addiction.
Western people and Japanese people have really different ways of thinking and senses of humor though, so it's hard to make close friendships with them.
