Freedos for msdos loaders (hdd/gpu/ssd hardware flashing and muh dos games)

ReactOS for w95-ws2001 (muh games and legacy drivers for utility devices that dont go online)

Wine for vista-8.1 games and hardware that needs to be modified first on windows to flash foss firmware.

I've managed to phase out work related programs so everything I use day to day is on Linux now.

Depends on what distro you choose. Solus for example is probably the easiest to use distro I have found. Even moreso than Ubuntu.
>in order to even get a fucking wifi adapter to work.
Assuming you're talking about a Broadcom NIC in a laptop? Yeah, it sucks, but there are several solutions. In some cases, just using the b43 drivers will work. In others, you can actually use the broadcom supplied drivers. Worst case scenario, you buy this
https://www.amazon.com/Panda-Wireless-PAU06-300Mbps-Adapter/dp/B00JDVRCI0/
for $15 and never have wifi issues again, or you can replace the entire NIC.

>GIMP
Many of the non-destructive features that make Photoshop great (filter/adjustment layers, layer effects, smart objects, high-end CMYK support, shape tool, etc.), GIMP isn't even expected to have for another couple of years according to their roadmap. The ability to select and move multiple layers, like Photoshop has had for years, isn't even on the roadmap.

https://wiki.gimp.org/wiki/Roadmap

>Inkscape
Inkscape is designed specifically for SVG web graphics, but not for print or video.

Inkscape explicitly conforms to the SVG featureset (if SVG doesn't support it, Inkscape can't do it); Illustrator on the other hand, while it supports SVG nicely, is not limited by what features the format supports, so they have the freedom to add as many features as possible.

Support for multiple artboards/pages in one document (pic related) is a key example that I've wanted, but Inkscape devs said they can't support it because even though it was a proposed part of SVG 1.2, it was dropped from SVG 2.0 so they can't do it.

I haven't been able to use Krita that much. It was practically unusable on Windows thanks to a bug. I would try to paint something and it would freeze and not update until I minimized and restored the window.

I just hope it has a modicum of the non-destructive features Photoshop has that GIMP is missing.

Inkscape's problem is that it doesn't simply export to SVG, it uses it as the very format to save documents to. Inkscape is basically an SVG editor. This means that its features are almost completely centered around W3C standards. They had to axe the much anticipated multiple canvas support because W3C took it out of SVG 2.0.

http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Multipage

>Currently, Inkscape does not have multipage support. The main reason is that the current SVG standard does not support multipage documents. This feature was proposed in the SVG revision 1.2, but for now got dropped in the next coming version SVG 2.0.

Illustrator's advantage is that while it can export to SVG, it is not necessarily dependent on a third-party to determine what features it can or cannot have.

But honestly at this point i don't even think about wasting time trying to learn how to deal with terminal stuff (and no, don't come telling me there are distros where you don't need to fuss with it, yes you need to, for pretty much everything)

Microsoft Office is fucking fantastic for my docs.

And when i'm feeling bored and get tired of researching our Lord and Savior Tolkien, i just boot up AI War, Age of Empires 2, Brutal Doom/Real Guns Advanced 2 Refined, Civilization II or any emulator up-to gen5.

Interestingly the font rendering is one of the reasons why i feel a bit more dead from inside each time i'm obligated to use windows for any reason. There's just no way to defend windows' font rendering.

>>61019115
>It wouldn't be so bad if more computers had high DPI support.
So a feature only works with certain hardware and that is fine? why does this argument is supposed to be valid for windows but not for linux? In the case of linux sometimes hardware manufacturers are shitty and don't support it even if often receives support from the community. Windows has no excuse when this happens and much less when is a feature like font rendering that should work fine without much hassle.

>(and no, don't come telling me there are distros where you don't need to fuss with it, yes you need to, for pretty much everything)

Windows supports DPI scaling just fine. The problem is that many laptops still come with only 1366x768 so most people are stuck at the original 96 DPI. The Surface Pro has a 2736x1824 display (similar to the MacBook Pro's Retina display), and the new Razer Blade goes even further with 4K 2160p, so these will do great with higher DPI scaling.

I know the there are a lot of good techies and normal people working in these agencies... I just don't know why they're not speaking up more.

why in the fuck do people design web pages in photoshop and not in illustrator? illustrator is way more layout and vector oriented. photoshop vector tools are barebones.
>>
>>61019762
Because artists, as a rule, are butt-fuck retarded and get their pea brains around vectors.
>>
>>61019762
you're not using anything of the mockup you make, so ps is fine and illustrator is worse. indesign would be better but since it's just a mockup that someone else is probably implementing it's better to use the tool you know.

tl;dr for spe/g/trum it's pseudocode for designers. you don't ask people writing pseudocode why they're not implementing asm, do you?
>>
>>61019807
>you're not using anything of the mockup you make, so ps is fine and illustrator is worse.

i export svgs, maintain swatches, grids, graphic styles etc.

global swatches are godsent for messing with color scheme, including every detail of background patterns.

quickly aligning, measuring shit etc is so much more easier than i've had doing this kind of stuff in photoshop.

i dun gedit.
>>
>>61019884
okay, swatches and grids, fair. but swatches and grids aren't hurt at all by not being ~le ebin mathematical vector~, swatches because they're 1d and grids because they're vector even on a raster canvas. you're using the tool you know, and that's ok, but the people using PS are using the tool they know and getting the same results at the same speed.

Literally for work I cannot switch. And no it isn't compatible with WINE, requires deprecated Cisco VPN to lodge tax returns. Also I have a number of macros I've designed to get OCR'd bank statements into a format that can be imported into our software. Spent too long on that and learning VB to switch to LaTeX

At home - would run it on HTPC but wouldn't be compatible with GTA which is one of the only games I pay so CBF

I so wish I could switch though because Linux just fits the way I like to use my PC
>>
>>61018536
Likewise, I can get it running on Linux but making it stable is another problem.
>>
>>61019884
According to Dribbble, Behance and Adobe surveys a lot of designers are slowly switching to Illustrator or Sketch for doing mockups. Most of the good designers in my area have moved to one of those two.

It's going to take a while because a lot of designers are incredibly familiar with Photoshop.

It's the most flexible and 'cookie-cutter'-less of any story organization software I've ever used. Two hours might not be enough. You should try it for a week or two. You get 30 non-consecutive days to try it out.

I like it because it gives me a bird's eye view of my story and lets me organize it the way I like. I just finished moving a couple of scenes around and I didn't even have to use cut and paste. I would be mashing the X and V keys over and over again if I were using a normal linear word processor.

I don't code in it. gaymes but also fl studio

not interested in bitwig or anything so i'll just keep using it in windows until wine compatibility gets a bit better

it runs and you can work with samples but vsts start fucking shit up in wine
>>
>>61028686
H O L Y SHIT how do i remove wine from my installation, do i need to do a distro wipe
>>
Why do such a disproportionate amount of musicians on /g/ use fruityloops?
>>
>>61028372
correct but also a bit misleading
it need not have been shown because the default wine prefix mounts your root to a secodary "drive" and home to your "windows libraries"
so you'll get double fucked because it will run over your home directory twice on default wine

but you could also just not have it like this by changing the settings
>>
>>61017491
yes it does but you need to compile it yourself

MATLAB and CAD.
I work a lot with them
>>
>>61028786
Because they're too stupid to use anything else.

I use Ableton.
>>
>>61028786
>>61028904
Everything makes so much more sense in Ableton, I don't understand people who use FL.
>>
>>61028904
As do I along with Logic. I haven't seen FL in a studio in over a decade, it's not even mentioned in the professional space. Was just wondering why it had so many fans here.
>>
>>61028786
i'm used to it, i'm aware a bunch of stuff is easier to do, but nothing is impossible to do and since i'm already super proficient and can just get to it there is just no big motivator for me to switch to anything else.
>>
>>61028786
Having used Ableton, FL Studio and Reason, FL Studio is just easy to use. They all do the same thing, so why choose the harder option?
>>
>>61024076
I did when I was switching from Mint to Debian.
Didn't work lel. I used Rufus with the exact same .iso and it worked perfectly just like it does every time.

Spend a weekend with vim senpai
Feel free to install plugins
>>
>>61027049
The only reason I ever installed Sublime Text was because I was in the same situation. But now I use Sublime in Windows as well.
It does the same thing NP++ does where you can exit at any time without losing anything. I hear people call that feature "hot exit."

Video games, have been really thinking about duel booting Ubuntu at some point
>>
>>
>>61028786

Because they aren't actually musicians in any real sense. They're "DJs" like Paris Hilton.
>>
>>61028786
It's just a super easy beginner tool and has a following on the internet from long ago
>>
For those who duel boot for video games, do you find it messes up your flow?

I do that and honestly I end up staying in windows sometimes just because I'm lazy
>>
>>61030296
Usually just end up staying in Windows. Linux doesn't really offer much over it anymore and Gnome, KDE, Xfce are all terrible.

How hard would it be to write a device driver for my midi keyboard? The only driver that works with it is for windows 7.
>>
>>61027494
nigga just use krita
>>
>>61020634
the whole point is that you don't own it if it's not actually libre you retard

If you owned it
1) You'd be able to modify it
2) You'd be able to give it to someone else if you wanted
3) You'd be able to give a modified version to someone else if you wanted, too
4) You'd be able to use it whenever you wanted, for whatever reason you wanted

Obviously, you'll agree that if you cannot do these things, because you're not allowed to, then you don't own it? Well those are literally the four fucking freedoms that must be protected for software to be libre by FSF standards

I run Emacs as a daemon and have Caps+Shift+Enter keybound to open an emacsclient instance

Closing the frame (what you'd call a window) doesn't do anything to the Emacs server daemon, so if I open emacsclient again, it'll have a buffer with the stuff I neglected to save
