Do Macs have issues? Sure they have, I'm not a huge fan of HFS+ for example. But the benefits (Full POSIX + a desktop environment and display manager that just freaking works) outweighs those limitations. It's only a laptop after all, important stuff is backed up and stored safely.

A Macbook Pro running GNU+Linux is the best laptop money can buy, despite how overpriced they are. Good performance, with a usable, non botnet unix like environment, and everything just works (only on older models because the 2016 memebar version is shit). Face it, literally no laptop designed for windows has good build quality any more. I haven't experienced any of the things you said. In fact I had a lot more of those issues with macOS, where for example the python version installed by XCode broke compatibility with some python library installed by brew or pip or whatever.

I'm using Fedora now. It just works. Package management is way better, high DPI support is excellent, I don't have to use the terminal unless I want to.

I've never not had a Linux installation that doesn't somehow get borked after 6 months because of either some software or hardware incompatibility. Sometimes it's an easy fix, sometimes it takes an afternoon to get fix, sometimes after a few days of waiting for a bug report that isn't abandoned, I just say fuck it, back up my data, and repartition.

I'm in academia (not CS but math), and I've discussed this with people quite a few times. Most of the time, the people who actually do some advanced programming (working in numerical or computational math, etc.) all have MBPs, and the reason they give is that they wanted a Unix machine where they don't have to spend a whole fucking day fixing the graphics card drivers every month like with Linux.

They don't give a fuck about the price because the university pays anyway, so they get the one machine that will give them a familiar, reliable operating system and a piece of mind - the MBP.

mbp is a great machine. i own a thinkpad but the mbp does everything i want too and its comfy light has a gr8 screen and ubiquitous. macos has a terminal and using it im not worried about pissing up my os bc every problem that i could possibly have on osx has been exoerienced before so i can just look up macos specific solutions. theres no shortage of software either and if i really want a winblows program to work i can use wine or boot into windows.

i own a t60 which ive librebooted so if i want to escape the botnet its no problem.
