>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

If you want help:
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA).
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate.
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?

CPUs:
>G4560 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - if you can't afford better or specifically need 8 threads but not a very powerful CPU
>R5 1500x - All you really need for 60fps with power to spare; Don’t get an i5.
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; Get a 1600x if you don't OC
>R7/Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/mixed use; Not required for just gaming.

GPUs:
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>RX 560 and GTX 1050Ti - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games
>RX570 - 1080p@60hz at high, running most maxed older games at 144+hz.
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@60hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; Go for the RX580 if you can.
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@144hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p.
>GTX 1080 Ti - 1440p@144 hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games; You're kind of going overboard with this one.
>AMD GPUs are suffering a lack of stock and Nvidia a rise in price thanks to e-currency miners

General:
>ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
>Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
>NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
>The Ryzen lineup comes with exceptionally good stock coolers. (with the exception of the 1600X) consider using them over any sub 35USD cooler.

Is this any good?

max budget is around 800/900 I guess.
>>
>>61017669
Swap the 7700 for an AMD Ryzen 5 1600.
Drop the cooler
Change the motherboard to a B350 chipset board
Add an SSD for a boot drive (120 GB minimum)
Change the memory to 3000 or 3200 mhz memory
change the PSU to semi-modular or fully modular.
>>
>>61017890
Thanks, switching all this and it actually came out different.
Can you tell me what the difference is between 7700 and the AMD one tho?
>>
>>61018741
cheaper* not different.
>>
>>61015032
When you want a pretty future proof and amazing computer, set aside at LEAST $1600. Here's a good parts list:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/2Q3qM8

I know the CPU is a little overboard, but at 4.2GHz, it's a good investment.

I work in a computer repair shop, and along with my other duties, I build custom rigs. While you CAN build a good PC for around $600, for an amazing experience, set aside at least $1600.
>>
>>61018741
>Can you tell me what the difference is between 7700 and the AMD one tho?
The AMD chip offers similar performance for a significantly lower price. The Ryzen 5 1600 has 6 cores and 12 threads, with similar performance to Intel's Kaby Lake processors. It falls behind slightly in single threaded workloads, so the Intel chips will provide slightly better gaming experiences but not by much. Ryzen shines though in anything multi-threaded like video editing or rendering of any kind. Because it has 6 cores and 12 threads and most games are designed for 4 cores and 8 threads (most, not all. Some use less, some use everything you'll give them), it leaves 2 cores and 4 threads free while gaming which allows you to leave open a browser with multple tabs, and discord open while gaming, without hindering gaming performance. The Intel chips will hit 100% CPU usage spikes in games which can cause stuttering and dropped frames. Meanwhile, a 1600 never goes above 60% CPU usage in games At worst, the Ryzen 5 1600 is 9% worse at gaming than an i7, but the difference is so small, most people won't notice it.
Besides, you can't take advantage of the i7's better performance unless your monitor has a 144 Hz refresh rate. Most people game at 60 to 75 HZ/fps at 1080P, which the 1600 will do all day long, and so will the i7. But the 1600 is cheaper with similar performance. IMO, the performance increase of the i7 isn't worth the $100+ price hike.
Sorry if this rambled. I'm not good with words.

You ni/g/gers almot made me kill myself. All of you anons recommended I go with the 1600 instead of 1600X "because overclocking performance is the same." I went ahead and bought 1600X because I didnt want to risk being able to have a high frequency if I lost the silicon lottery or some shit. And now, for some god damm reason, I cant OC for shit. I have a Corsair H60, and when using ASUS ROG CPUBurn, even with a 0.5GHz OC, it fucking crashes within 2 minutes. Also I cant OC my validated memory to its rated speed (3200MHz). I can only OC it to 2933MHz so it can post, and even then in Ryzen Master and CPU-Z it shows 2133. I am running BIOS version 7b. What should I do now? RMA cooler, board, or the CPU?

There are several things on that list that really strike me as foolish and since you say you're the First Time builder then I'll actually make a long blog-like post to help you out.

>>61017890
This has the most important points. You absolutely want a modular and better quality (more expensive) PSU. There will be some connectors you don't use and you'll have those wires hanging around in your case. You can tie them together and so on but it's just so better to have a modular one. Further, the fan on that PSU is absolute shit and it will be loud. A good PSU can last you several builds. It's the one part of the PC you really don't want to cheap out on. A good semi-passive PSU like Corsair RMi (don't buy RMx) can last you very long because the fan doesn't "wear out" and it makes a lot less noise. On cheapaer PSUs with a fan that was shit to begin with the fan will become really loud after a year or two.

You absolutely want to have a SSD in your build, if you can't afford both a SSD and a HDD then just buy a SSD now. The difference in boot times and game startup times is HUGE.

Also, that cheap cooler has a shitty fan that gives off more noise from the motor than the air movement - just like all the shitty cooler master fans. If it's a fan or got a fan and it's from cooler master then you want to avoid it.

Buy one 8 GB memory module, not 2x4 and buy another one when you can afford later.

I think my biggest stumbling block in a new build right now is the lack of GPU options, it's put me in the position where i might as well just save up for better parts since the ones i originally wanted are unavailable.

Which in some ways isn't all bad, i'll probably end up getting a Vega or 1080 at this rate.

still looking for a video card though. ideally I'd like to be able to game at 4k since I use a 4k monitor for the other stuff, but I dont mind stepping back to 1440p, and I also dont mind buying used gpu.
any suggestions? anything I should be aware of or think of differently? m.2 is going to be used for scratch disk and for some virtual instrument libraries, not as a boot disk so dont worry about that. anything i should look at?

>twice the computational ability
...having twice the computational ability doesn't actually help you at all with a lot of workloads.

Encoding HEVC with ffmpeg -c:v libx265 won't use more than 5 threads regardless of what you do (please, PLEASE go ahead and prove me wrong). It's pretty much the same story with AVC video. Encoding VP9 with ffmpeg is even worse, that will barely use two.

A few things like pbzip2 (default installed on fedora is bzip2, you have to replace it) and make -j12 will push a Ryzen CPU to it's limit but most things don't. They just don't.

Intel fanboys are somewhat right (for now) about this "single core performance" matters meme and also somewhat right about the "quad core is enough" meme.

Expect buzzing from the fans motor and loud clicking. Every single cooler master fan on every single one of their products is complete garbage.

Try looking at something like Be Quiet Pure Rock or Be Quiet Pure Rock Slim. Do look closely at your motherboard and the height of your RAM before buying the Pure Rock one, though. That one is massive and does hoover over the first RAM slot on a lot of motherboards. I absolutely love it, it's rated at 140W TDP and you can run this thing fan-less - not without a fan, have a fan and set the fan to start spinning at 48C. It'll rarely kick in like when you encode a video for more than 20 minutes and things like that.

This is absolutely true and a problem.

I bought a AX370-Gaming 5 motherboard, a Ryzen 1600X CPU and a 32 GB Corsair LPX kit and put it together and started it up and it got the the grub screen and the minute I started GNU/Linux I GOT A BLANK SCREEN AND IT JUST HUNG. Booting another distro revealed that it was due to RAM issues.

Now, it did work just fine after downloading the latest non-beta BIOS from their website. Everything's worked just fine since.

Do expect problems like this out of the box with Ryzen systems.

seeing you already have a new gpu the wisest choice would be upgrading cpu, so you'd also need new motherboard and ram. the most popular (and best value) choice would be: Ryzen 5 1600 + B350 motherboard (AsRock or MSI) + 8GB (or 16GB) of ~3000MHz DDR4 RAM.

Any advantages from intel cpus considering both processors are in the same league?
I'm used to the classic story of intel cpus being the best, why are AMD ones so popular? Is it the better cooling?

I currently own a laptop and three 1tb 2.5" hdds, is there a way to use them as internal hdds for a PC?

>Are there any downsides to amd cpus with nvidia graphic cards?

>Any advantages from intel cpus considering both processors are in the same league?
The Intel CPUs have slightly stronger cores and hit higher frequencies, but that's irrelevant to the vast majority of workloads
>why are AMD ones so popular? Is it the better cooling?
More cores at a lower price, more power efficient, better heat dissipation, much better stock cooler, overclocking unlocked on all CPU

Let me take an example about something you use. In this picture, the R7 1700 scores 18,91 frame per second in this specific x264 benchmark. It's a CPU that costs $300, comes with a pretty decent stock cooler and can run on a $60 motherboard if you want. Then, much lower, you get the 7700k: costs $315, doesn't come with a cooler, and needs a pretty good $120+~ motherboard to run well thanks to it's high clocks. Why does it cost so much? Because it's 4 cores at 4.2 - 4.5 GHz and Intel decided that for some reason, that was worth $315 without a cooler. Meanwhile the R7 1700 has eight cores at 3.0 - 3.7 GHz. This is why Ryzen is so popular, because Intel has been jewing us for years and AMD came in with a great architecture and went very aggressive on the pricing.
In your case, anything Intel is retarded as you'd need to pay much much more than an AMD build to reach the same level of performance. Video editing and encoding makes a massive use of more cores, so does heavy multi tasking (which you will do without a doubt while game designing), so does 3D modelling, so does compilation. The only thing Intel has going for it is the clock advantage now, but even then they manage to fuck it up with shitty heat dissipation making their 4.3+GHz CPUs reach 90°C and above temperature spikes pretty easily.

But I still have a doubt about the following:
Why should I go for a R7 1700 and not a R7 1800X?
Yes the R7 1800X (from what I see) includes no CPU cooler but would it's longevity and future performances for games in 1 - 2 years be worth it?
Or would I be better off getting the R7 1700 and eventually buy a new processor in a couple years time?
>>
>>61025206

>>61025206
Ditch the i5, cpu cooler & motherboard, go R5 1600 with a b350 motherboard
Spend $10 more in the hard drive to get twice the capacity (1TB), games are really heavy these days (doom & BF1 50GB, GTA V 70GB)
Get a bigger capacity SSD if you can
For the GPU it depends on your need, a GTX 1080 is a waste of money for 1080p gaming, you can settle for a GTX 1070. MSI and Asus are pretty good GPU coolers brands, i'd avoid EVGA because of the exploding cards

average overclock for 4690k is 4.5GHz, but of course you may not hit that. google a guide on how to overclock. it's really not that hard and it's almost impossible to kill the cpu if you're following a guide.

Update your BIOS, the first generation of Ryzen boards had a few memory issues that have mostly been fixed now.

Not building exactly but I bought a laptop from Amazon yesterday from a new American brand. It's called Eluktronics. Has anyone from /g/ ever tried them for fun? I spent about $1.299 without tax because they are based in Delaware so there's no sales tax. And reviews everywhere are really positive.

Originally, I was going to buy into an ultrabook because I'm selling my desktop and desk and my monitors to make room for me newborn baby and fit the needed things. I needed a laptop for portability to go from room to room. But after spending 3 days of looking at ultrabooks, it made me cringe inside really hard to think I would be paying an absurd amount of money (I would have spent up to $1500) on a razer stealth. Again, I didn't want to spend this amount of money and know I could get better hardware so I caved into a slightly bigger and heavier laptop for better performance.

Been considering making a hackintosh because Winshit is getting annoying and I don't like all of the spying crap.

However Ryzen is looking really nice for the price right now. I use Linux 90% of the time except for certain programs(Lightroom and Ableton Live). Still looking at Intel because it has better compatibility for hackintosh.

Right now I'm running

I'm thinking of getting a Ryzen 1700 since it's supposed to run cooler. Is the 1600 worth looking at? I do occasionally edit pictures, video and record audio. Definitely want to get 32 GB of ram though.

That's a good deal for that price. One of the things I was looking for in a build was to at least have a 512gb ssd. I didn't feel like ordering one separately and installing it. Just look for inexpensive RAM, pretty much the opposite from what you posted. >Ryzen does better in these CPU intensive games because it's not starving for more room, therefore you should get an i5 for rocket league!
It's not doing better just because it's these specific games, it's doing better because 4 threads are not enough for these games and the CPU ends up being a bottleneck, hence why the 7700k is still miles ahead of the Ryzen CPUs in these games: it's not the engine giving the advantage to the Ryzen architecture, but the engine being so CPU heavy it needs more than 4 threads to work with or it won't have enough room.

I'm a different anon. I'm wondering how to spot good ram and I've done a bit of research. I'm not sure what the listed specs actually mean though because people seem to just completely ignore the listed speeds and run on something different. I'm convinced that companies bump up the "clock speed" in order to bait retards into buying shitty ram.

This is like the only ram I could find that had near 3k clock speed and had a cas latency below 14. Their was one pair with 3k clock and 14 cas latency that was also a corsair dominator platinum which seems to be their enthusiast line for ram.

I'm not strictly a gamer and I'd like to have fast ram that will compliment a Ryzen 5 1600, an EVO Pro 500 gb M.2 SSD. I feel like its highly important to research well and make sure your components aren't going to bottleneck eachother. I'm worried that the CPU might be too shitty but from what I can gather the Ryzen 5 1600 essentially IS an enthusiast CPU that had faulty cores disabled. It seems to still have the same bus interfaces and cache and shit thats important for matching the SSD and Ram.

It's not for higher refresh rates, it's literally just any game under any circumstances. Games don't care about multi-threaded they just want strong cores, and sadly thats probably not going to change until DX12 gets broad acceptance or some shit.
