Don't use pipe or add swap if you have a few gigs of disk space. Linux is great for embedded systems, but COMPILING Linux software on embedded systems is not. How did you not realize this?

Ask on the gentoo forums. Don't be discouraged, it took me about 3-4 days to get a working gentoo install for the first time, its worth it.
