It was only when I started thinking about becoming a spy that I became truly, perfectly, shamelessly, unequivocally accepting of the glory of the modern surveillance state.

I realized I was paranoid and afraid of the implications of mass surveillance due to sheer principle rather than any reasonable worries. I decided that was not how I wanted to live.

So I live perfectly content with big data gathering in mind. I just don't give a fuck anymore. Surely the higher-ups, elites, and important people are watched a lot more closely than I am. I figure I would be okay with that if I was them - and I would just act accordingly - so I decided to do the same thing with my own life.

Sometimes I actually feel a really warm glow of coziness when I think about secret agents stumbling across my writings and imaginations.

it is just a long and slow process. Traditionally you were recruited by a specific talent spotting professor.

The whole 9-12 month process is a bit time consuming and slow, and they often do over the top, ridiculous interviews.

I remember taking an elevator to an empty floor of an office block, talking for hours and being asked really strange questions. They like good grades and the ability to critically think, but many of them are meddling bureaucrats who have less powers than the police and too much money from the state.

Hey, that's pretty similar to the story my grandfather told me. He used to teach mathematics at ASU. I was pretty incredulous when he told me this story, even though he said so casually, but, before he was an advisor at the whitehouse, I think his professor or one of his friends referred him to some floor in an office building, and asked him a bunch of questions. he didn't even realise he was getting interviewed until two thirds of the way in, at which point he declined.
