I've had two graphics card fail in one year. Is there anything I can do to improve the stability of my new one?

Give it back
you could have a shit psu or motherboard that is frying them.

Also don't be a poorfag and try to get

Were there any blown caps or black marks on the PCI-E pins on the broken cards..? Seems odd to have two cards die within a year.

Buy AMD instead
I had 2 670's die on me

My first one was an evga gtx 570 that lasted me about 5-6 years.
My 2nd one was a zotac gtx 1060 that lasted me 4 months. I RMA'd it and got a new one.

My PSU is a TX 750w and my mobo is an asus p8p67. I can't check for blown capacitors because of the fan and heat sinks.
Both were still sort of working but the gtx 1060 couldn't do any 3D without crashing. Neither had any useful error messages.
