Stupid question coming in:
I bought a new LED TV and it has a slight coil whine.
It can be barely heard when you sit in front of it and the room is completely silent.
Is this normal and if not, should I be worried?
Right now I don't feel like returning it, since it isn't really an issue

Here's a tough one for you:

My PC crashed a couple of days ago and I couldn't get it to reach the windows login page, it'd just go black screen on me. Today I finally just reinstalled windows. Everything was fine until I installed a bunch of drivers and restarted. Suddenly I got the same problem, black screen where there should be a login sreen. So I reinstall again. This time I restart it a few times, just to make sure it does boot properly anyway, and then I install ONLY the graphics driver. It doesn't restart again, it says Starting Windows (7) and then goes back to the same black screen.

What does it all mean?

I don't want to lose the digital license and have to pay for/pirate windows for no reason. How do I do a complete wipe and windows installation without losing the license + important drivers to make the hardware work.
>>

I have a Radeon R9 270X. If the Linux USB also fails to boot, what could that mean? Because when I was trying to fix the PC originally I couldn't launch any live Linux distros.

Your GPU is fucked probably.

So I bought this pretty cool old laptop, but the screen is pretty yellowish. I'm almost 100% sure that it is not how they came from the factory. It's also not the cable or the connector because I've tried bending it in every way possible and it didn't do anything.
So what could be the cause of this and is there anything I can do to make it better?
>>
>>60995911

If the GPU was fucked wouldn't it not display graphics at all? That's the bit that confuses me. Although that was crash was in 30 degree temperatures while I watching youtube videos, while I was playing a game desu. It wouldn't surprise me if the heat got to it.

bought this Asus X75VD 3.5 years ago, but haven't used it at all almost a year, so it's been used for 2.5 years. I swapped the disc drive for a caddy with 128GB 850EVO and added 4GB RAM

It's 17.3" 1600x900 with an i5-3210M and GT610M, 8GB RAM, 500GB HDD and 128GB HDD. The battery is dead.

I paid €599 for the laptop, €95 for the ssd and caddy and €20 for the ram, totaling about €720.

now i want to sell it because it build a gut pc last year, but it's very hard to find the right price. models go all over the place and the demand for older consumer laptops (no apple or business) seems to be low.

apart from the battery, the laptop works 100%, what would be a good price?
>>
>>60996087
It's a Dell M1210. Not sure about the backlight it uses.
>>
>>60996116
75-80% of the original price to someone that doesnt know anything about PCs.
Since it uses a SSD they will see it too fast and will want it.

The problem is looking for someone that wants a laptop and will pay that much.
>>
>>60996071

No I mean ambient temperatures were 30 centigrade and the last thing I saw on the temperature monitors before it crashed were quite bloody high so that's probably what did it in. It's just weird that installing the driver is the ultimate fail state though I guess it makes sense as it would go from using minimal-capabilities to using everything it can.

What is the name of that program that lists incoming/outgoing traffic and lets you block/deny them? I think it has the word 'shark' in the name but can't remember.

Related but not exactly the same, whats the name of the program that 'fixes' the privacy stuff in windows 10 (I'm aware it's probably placebo, but still would like to take a look at it)?

I had multiple ads online for €450 for about two months with only terrible €200 bids.
Now replaced it with €400, still nothing for a month, now did €350 and got an €330 offer.

€330 seems really fucking low to me. The screen may be shit, but you can use HDMI and have it plugged in and basically use it as a desktop. Boot times on W10 is almost instant.

What prices are regular, not specifically for someone that doesn't know shit about pc's?
>>
>>60996338
Its because nobody will spend so much in a laptop when you can get better and cheaper trough internet, but that is what your laptop is worth (€+-450~475).

Everyone will go for something reliable and cheaper like a Thinkpad.
T430 is the equivalent of your laptop (except it doesn't have a GPU) and is $250.

sudo make install

This runs make install as root. Which means
${HOME}
is /root. What you are asking for help doing is very bad practice for using make. You could add a userconfig rule which copies the file to the current users home dir with correct permissions. You shouldn't install user level config files in a generic install rule. Users are usually expected to manage their own config files.

If you absolutely have to do this you could use the $LOGNAME variable to find the directory of the user who used sudo. Your Makefile will be Pajeet level trash if you do this.

Is it bad at all to leave an SSD left plugged in to a SATA power cable but not have the SATA data cable in?

Just got a new PSU and it has brutally tight SATA cables, I sometimes need to disconnect my SSD from my system for security reasons and run other drives, and don't know if it's bad to leave it powered but not have the data cable in.

If it's not obvious, I mean I want to use it like this with the system turned on of course.

Can anyone tell me why using XMP for my ram with a 1600x causes the CPU Vcore to go way up?

My ram is rated for 3200, but even running it at 2933 my average VCore goes up to 1.43v according to HWInfo and my CPU idle and load temps go up significantly.

If I run the ram at "auto" settings it will boot at 2133 and the CPU voltage is normal.

Is there something else I should be adjusting or is this normal? I'd obviously like to keep my ram clocked higher since it gives about a 10-15% performance boost in the games I play, but I'm not happy about those voltages.
>>
>>60999260
It's normal, most BIOSes will give a voltage bump when you turn on XMP to hopefully get better stability. You can turn down the voltage manually with offset to get something more reasonable.

What should I use to search for specific words, quotes, or lines of text in large piles of .txt .log .rtf .doc and .docx text files in a folder or folder tree and then list he files that got hits and show a preview of the section(s) of the text file where the hits were found.

preferably something that uses gui because I'm not command prompt literate.

I'm looking to be able to search though months, or in some cases years, of stored logs i keep on my hard drive and find the specific file I want in a couple of minutes instead of 20 minutes to an hour of searching though several results to see which one has the information I'm looking for.

With core boost disabled it seems I have no problem running XMP@2933 and [email protected]/1.3v. With core boost enabled it then just seems to do whatever it wants with the voltage and it averages around 1.43 to 1.47 which seems way too high.

I wonder why the core boost is so overly aggressive. It seems like for general usage it would actually be better to disable core boost and then overclock with a set voltage below 1.4v.

I'm building a PC out of spare parts to gift to a friend, and I've run into a problem.

This Asetek cooler (corsair h50 equivalent) I scavenged from an old dell prebuilt causes the CPU to overheat and shut down within a minute. It is making good contact with the CPU, and it sounds like it's pumping fluid. I also tried plugging the pump into molex in case the fan connector wasn't providing enough power.

Is the cooler dead? any suggestions?

Anyone got experience with Leshcat drivers?

I picked up a laptop with an okay graphics card for a steal (5000 Nipbucks). But apparently windowns 10 hates my graphics card. While it's happy to detect i have an AMD graphics card, the games i play default to the Intel HD 3000.

I tried looking for options in the BIOS but aside from date, time, and boot order, there is nothing for other devices.

I was advised to try leshcat, and i have downloaded the appropriate 3rd party drivers but i have no idea how to install. I tried installing manually but i am not exactly sure about the process. So far its...

>device manager
>choose graphics card
>manual update

from there it takes me to windows update...

Making things harder is the fact that windows 10 seems incredibly dumbed down and missing advanced options, and also that the laptops language is not my own.

Pretty sure with Win10, once it is installed with a certain mobo, it will always remember it and activate automatically. Theres also a program that can extract the product key from the installation.

I'm about to be buying a used HP Proliant G5 server.

The guy selling has 3 options.

1x146GB drive, 24gb of RAM and dual Quad-Core 3.0 Xeons - $125

1x146GB drive, 32gb of RAM and dual Quad-Core 3.0 Xeons - $175

1x146GB drive, 32gb of RAM and dual Quad-Core 2.3 Xeons - $150

Which one should I get? All I'm going to be doing is using it as a hypervisor for vulnerable VM's. Nothing crazy.

TL;DR - 2.3 Xeon vs 3.0 Xeon... is the 3.0 really worth getting?

You go to the motherboards website and find the bios image.
VERIFY THE CHECKSUM.TWICE

Follow the guide there to update it
It most likely is a file you put on a flash drive and then pick an option in the bios which then boots the bios image updater software

Noticed when I had PSTV master volume at 100% that there was some obvious distortion on character voices when they speak above a certain volume, not sure if it was caused by clipping or what, but when I lowered it to about 90% and raised the volume on my amp to compensate (to the same level it was before) the distortion went away. Why would this be? I always thought that if you were on a digital connection (and I am, it's outputting audio through HDMI to my DAC/amp which plugs into my headphones) that it was ideal to set software volume to 100% and use the amp to regulate it. Is this not correct? Or just something to do with how the Vita/PSTV regulates volume and not applicable to other devices?

Depends on what you need If you need more than 16GB RAM you need something with quad channels. And ebay would be a surer bet.

I mean I *probably* don't.

Lets just say I'm using the machine to host a single VM, while I'm using my main rig (FX8350 @ 4.5ghz, etc) that has multiple OS's installed, Kali Linux being one of them, to attack the server hosting the VM.

Or, at most, the server has a VM running of Kali, and VM running of the vulnerable VM. Even 16 is probably fine.

I just hadn't even thought about the large power consumption two xeons would draw.

I have a limited space netbook I use for work and to occasionally watch videos on YT, Netflix, etc. in the evenings. It's Windows 8.1 and because of the limited space, my sister advised me to remove some Microsoft Redistributables. I don't have a lot of programs I use anymore (I removed AIM, Steam is on my actual PC, so forth) so she told me it would just save space. Because it's a netbook with such limited space, 50 MB is a lot (if I remove absolutely everything I have less than 2 GB usable space and with bunch of work documents and photos you can imagine it fills up faster than I anticipated).

I was an idiot and didn't scribble down what I removed because I thought I had a system restore point... but I have none. The issue I'm specifically aware of is that Netflix won't work. The main page is fine, but when I click on any video it's just an entirely black, blank page.

How can I figure out which Redistributables I removed and how to replace them? It was only three of them (I thought I was being safe, ha ha). Any help is appreciated since I can't really afford anything else to carry around right now, even a cheaper laptop.

for name in (list) tokenizes based on white space, so spaces in file names screw it all up.
find . -name ".rar" -printf "'%p'\n"

will give you the file names in single quotes, one per line, but the for in will still frig it up.
You could pipe the output of the find command to another script.
In the past I've used the -printf to build a command, written the output of find to a file, then executed that file to do the task at hand. Something like
find . -name ".rar" -printf "mv '%p' ./\n"

would do what your code fragment is doing.

Conditioning birthed from a protectionist desire to segregate the memes of 4chan from the memes of reddit. Whether you think one site is better than the other there should at least be some acknowledgement that separating the communities is better for memes than having a bunch of crossposters. Fight globalist consolidation anon.

>youtube for videos

Regardless the consolidation of the web is shit. I mean the separation already exists I guess. I'll be using it for browsing/watching chinese cartoon.
Maybe edit some presentations.
>>61006429
I've considered that, but it's heavier and larger than X220.

If you're downloading something through torrents, how secure are you? Is it enough to just set a http proxy?
>>
What do you recommend as a efficient but cost-effective vidcard? Preferably 512
>>
>>61006484

Laptop, tablets are toys, look at those cheap chink laptops, they're very light and around the same price of a refurbished thinkpad
>>
>>61006555
>tablets are toys
I know that, that's why I asked here.
I can get a refurbished X220 or new android tablet for the same price.
I know I can do more stuff with the laptop, but a tablet is have less weight.
And I need to pack more things in one bag, like clothes and stuff.

do ryzen CPUs have built in GPU?
>>
>>61006595
No.
>>
>>61006589
A 35L backpack can COMFORTABLY fit all the things you mentioned.

Source: I carry daily clothes, jacket and an E728 Emachines in a coleman 35L backpack no problem.
>>
>>61006605

So what's the best CPU right now for a general purpose low cost facebook/youtube machine?

I'm using this, so I should get a bigger bag?

Get something like a Chuwi 14.1, it's a lot lighter than a thinkpad
>>
>>61006639
With the laptop, I can carry 3 ranger rolls (T-shirt, underwear, socks) and have loads of space for hygiene, so I think it may be even 4 or so rolls.

A 28L backpack or less seems not enough. It's called a 'day pack' for a reason.
>>
>>61006589
don't be a fag, even girls carry laptops in their backpacks
>>
>>61006647

but then i will have to buy a gpu...

Is there a Linux distro that's more laptop friendly than others?

I remember trying to run mint and manjaro on my piece of shit Lenovo yoga 13 and having driver issues with maybe the wireless card?
>>
I'm downloading stuff all day long, but hardly using it for other things. Would turning the computer on safe mode with networking reduce the damage to the hardware lifespan?
>>
>>61006679
>ranger rolls
I have to wear button shirts, maybe some sleepwear, scrubs?
>>
>>61006180
bump
>>
>>61006816
Sleepwear can be rolled.
Buttonshirts might fit as well, although I'm not sure how it would fare in any backpack.

The bottom line may be: 35L - backpack volume = the backpack you showed + some smaller pockets
>>
>>61006811
Not related.
>>61006786
Some WiFi cards have issues with Linux in general, just use the propriety drivers.
>>61006752
Well it's up to you.
Most social media sites are barely usable with older hardware.
C2D can't run Facebook without starting a house fire, blame the webapp.

or I could buy a current gen pentium...

Malwarebytes started notify to upgrade to Malwarebytes 3 constantly.
Is it true form what i've heard it has become shit and a botnet? Can i just keep it on 2 since I just do a scan every few weeks for peace of mind, because common sense 2018?
>>
>>61007454
If you don't upgrade to the latest version you won't be fully protected
>>
>>61007454
Yes, Malwarebytes did turn to shit when they started going as an all in one AV & enabling the trial version by default. I swapped to SuperAntiSpyware.
>>
>>61007454
R.I.P Malwarebytes. 3 is disgusting. You could keep 2, but then I'm not sure if you can do a seperate database update for where they detect the viruses n shit.
>>
>>61007188
memory is slow so a cpu with hyperthreading can do other things while it's waiting for memory reads, and to allow software to make use of this it has more virtual cpu cores than physical cpu cores
>>
>>61006256
What are you running? ADSL? DSL? VDSL?

Looks pretty good for the price, slightly concerned with how many people flashed custom firmware, I hope it doesn't mean the stock is garbage

Is it possible for a GPU to be DOA even though both its fans and all the ports work fine?

I have it installed properly but the system won't recognize it and I can't install drivers for it.

I'd tell you to get this since it's what I use but you can't new copies of it anymore.

I'm learning C# using VisualStudio 2017.

Is there some reason i can't interact with things in a TableLayoutPanel, i can make things work outside of it (for example, changing text colour with a click), but once i try to use a table to arrange things i cant interact with it anymore.

What's the difference between Linux desktop envoriments?
>>
>>61008257
>>Yes
That's not what that post said. That post just said that any item can be DOA, but it didn't regard the fans and ports working. The question isn't if a GPU can be DOA, it's if a GPU with working fans and ports is dead.
This is a stupid questions thread, not a stupid answers thread.

Sad day gentlemen.

So, one of my Dell 1906FP 19" monitors stopped displaying earlier. The green light is always on now, but when I plug it in it stays on for about 2 seconds them goes black. Is there any saving this here? Is it fucked?

I re-installed my AMD drivers which did nothing.

Hours of googling haven't helped

Ever since i applied a win 10 update, I can't use bluetooth anymore
I just don't have the option to turn it on, and theres absolutely nothing bluetooth related in the device manager

My mobo is a z270i, and before the update it had perfectly working bluetooth.
All i can find is fishy 3rd party driver installing softwares that i wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole
