Wizards assemble !

Advanced users of GNU/Linux (and I mean advanced), remember to try Source Mage GNU/Linux. True source-based distribution, and (in contrast with Gentoo and Arch) is:
Free from obfuscated and pre-configured code.
Fully committed to GPL, uses only free software (as in freedom) in their main package.
With even the documentation licensed as FDL.
Without 3rd party patches, sensible defaults or masked packages.
Doesn't need obfuscated python libraries, only bash.
Use clean dependencies as they came from upstream developers, which by the same provides instant updates.
Can heal broken installs.
Can also use flags.

Do you like Arch Linux's AUR? Do you like Gentoo's portage (or ports-like) package manager? With SMGL's "sorcery" you get all that. Making new spells (packages) not found in the grimoire (repository) is easy http://sourcemage.org/Spell/Book

Bash hackers welcome! Come and join http://sourcemage.org/

Found this

http://appimage.org/

It's an amazing piece of technology. To make the application portable, it is embed into its own virtual file system, the "image", which includes the application but also all the required dependencies. Download once, run everywhere! AppImage has been endorsed by Linus Torvalds himself.

Maybe there still hope for gnu+linux on desktop, after all.

Although "GNU/Linux" /ɡəˈnuː slæʃ ˈlJnəks/ is often pronounced without the slash, Stallman recommends explicitly saying the word "slash" or "plus" in order to avoid the mistaken suggestion that the Linux kernel itself is a GNU package,[55] as is the case with GNU Linux-libre.

>>
>>60995122
Hey friend! I notice that you happen to have misunderstood the meaning of the word "free" in "free software". Allow me to explain.
When we are talking about free software, we aren't referring to price. We don't mean "free" as in "free beer"; if we did, we would say "gratis". Instead, what is meant by free software is software that respects your software freedoms. Think of "free speech". Now what are these software freedoms that I mentioned? There are four of them and they are essential to the user's ability to control their own computing, as opposed to being controlled by their software. The four software freedoms are:
0. To run the program as the user wishes.
1. To study the source code of the program and change it so it does what the user wishes.
2. To share exact copies of the program with the user's friends, neighbors and anyone else the user wishes to share the software with.
3. To distribute modified versions of the software, thus improving the program and helping the community.
When a program's license does not grant the user all of the software freedoms, it is a nonfree, proprietary program. These programs restrict the user's freedoms and put them under the control of whoever wrote the software. This is an injustice that the free software movement is fighting against.
Let me stress once again that software freedom isn't concerned with price; in fact, developers of free software are welcome to charge whatever fee they find appropriate.
I hope I could clear up this misunderstanding on your part. Have a nice day!

stallman is not a philosophically pure person. he follows his ideals when convenient, and ignores them or slightly alters them when the conflict isn't worth it.

stallman is an egoist in denial, afraid of admitting that he just wants some fucking source code instead of a world where he has to rely on other people because he knows he wouldn't get it that way.

his system has some practical merits but his attempts at creating moral justifications are completely pathetic and nonsensical. how low do you have to be to have to make up bullshit "oughts" when you can just say "it would be fucking better"?

I switched! I backed up all my stuff and switched. WPS doesn't work anymore because since I last installed they released some broken-as-shit alpha, but I'm doing libreoffice now.
Also, in backing up the .config and all, I forgot to include my .bashrc. Fortunately I didn't use it that much, so no worries.

All in all, I'm happy with the result. Started minimal and now my most used programs are:

A "net installation" means that all/most packages are fetched over the
internet from a distribution's mirrors at the time of install. While
this might seem like the norm today, it wasn't always that way. People
had slow internet, so it was often easier to download the big multiset
DVDs when we wanted to install a distribution on a new machine.

A "minimal installation" is when you go into the advanced options in the
debian installer and do an "expert" install. This allows much more
granular control over precisely what packages are installed on your new
machine.

Obviously, a net install does not imply a minimal install, and a minimal
install does not imply a net install. The reason your new install has a
lot of games in spite of doing a net install is because those games come
with a default Debian install and that's what you installed.(though that
doesn't seem right to me, I think you might have actually selected them
explicitly...maybe?)

Regardless, if you want to have a more minimal install, this gives you
an opportunity to really dive into apt. Look into tasksel, with a bit of
googling you can bring the number of packages on your system down
considerably.

Hope this helps.

Hi /g/uys,

I want to dual boot windows and debian. However, grub is a bitch because I mostly forget about it and accidentaly boot into the default option.

I have seen the option to install GRUB on a separate hard disk/flash drive. Does that mean that when the flash drive is in, I'm booting Linux and when it's out of the port, I'm booting Windaz? It would be great to know, but I'd rather know before shitting up my PC.

Thanks, guys.

I looked up that model name in the debian wiki, my usual first stop, no dice. I then tried h-node, and I found it:

https://h-node.org/wifi/view/en/266/Atheros-Communications-Inc-TP-Link-TL-WN821N-v3-1--Atheros-AR9002-/1/1/undef/undef/undef/undef/wifi-works/TL-WN821N

That page tells you the driver (kernel module) needed. Now you have to find out which package contains that module, and install it.

But, are you sure you don't have it already? I have an ubuntu box at home - desktop, no wireless interface - and it has that driver listed under /lib/modules/$KERNEL_VERSION/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/ath . Try loading the module with modprobe first. If it fails to find it, then search your repositories for the package that contains it.

For searching packages, you can use a package manager or your web browser - I'm pretty sure ubuntu has a web somewhere for searching packages.

but if you just want a browser that isn't a botnet, you don't have much choices since currently all browsers have the botnet
my 2 cents:
gnu icecat is a firefox fork with most tracking stuff removed and privacy addons added.
you can archive the same effect with vanilla firefox, tweaking your about:config and install the usual suspects: ublock, umatrix, https everywhere, etc.

Very nice.

This is the best one, no need to install anything.

curl https://pastebin.com/raw/0akbv3gm

Use the modprobe command to load a kernel module. You can also use the lsmod command to list modules that are currently loaded.

Read the modprobe manpage (manual page) in order to learn how to use it, by running "man modprobe". It is quite straightforward, though - you can just run "modprobe $MODULE_NAME" (must run it as root).

I expect it will either successfully load the module, complain that the module is already loaded, or fail to find the module (unlikely, you seem to have it installed). If it works, you should be able to see your network interface (with ifconfig, ip, iwconfig, or just the NetworkManager applet on your panel).

>>61011111

It's clearly mentioned in the guide that you should set the hostname.

>>61011086

Add it yourself under the window manager shortcuts.

Thanks for reminding me to look up how to use the pastebin api.
>>
>>61011228
Ok, pastebin is dildos. First it wants an api key, and then (during testing), you get shit like: Post limit, maximum pastes per 24h reached.

Fuck this shit.
>>
>>61011645
Anyway, for that one guy, parsing the 4chan archives:
echo 'look mom, I found an api key on github' | curl -sS -F 'api_dev_key=f058f68ae36897f3f15fcccba445d551' -F 'api_paste_expire_date=10M' -F 'api_option=paste' -F 'api_paste_code=<-' -F 'api_paste_private=1' http://pastebin.com/api/api_post.php | sed 's#/#/raw/#3'

And here something uncucked.
alias 0x0='curl -sSF file=@- https://0x0.st'

What's a good distro for just fucking around with to learn the basics of linux computing?

Any of them

install arch linux, it really teaches you about the linux OS
>>
>>61011730
I'd recommend Manjaro. It isn't as babby cucked as Mint, based on Arch so you can fuck around with the AUR and most stuff from the ArchWiki will work for you. It also looks nice ootb, if you want go a bit deeper, get the i3 or bspwm community editions.

That said, you can learn the GNU system with any distro. Just get used to the terminal. The "pasta collection" in OP has a good terminal (shell) section.

nice meme

you are aware that manjaro is called "manjaro linux", e.g. disrespectful against gnu? :^)

Not too long ago I installed Debian 8 on a laptop via DVD. I'm currently upgrading it to Stretch, but I'm a beginner who's never really touched sources.list. This is what mine currently looks like, is this how it should look? Have I missed anything important (noting that I only want basic stuff from stable)?

deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian stretch main
deb-src http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian stretch main

deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian stretch-updates main

It's fine, maybe missing "nonfree" if you need nonfree drivers or programs, but (if everything works fine) keep it like it is.
>>
>>61012148
Thanks anon.
>>
>>61011998
Did I say somewhere that I'm using Manjaro? I just think it's a neat newcomer distro. Get off of your autism.

Telling people to use DOWNSTREAM distros is a BAD idea and shame on you

whats a good linux distro for a server

I used centos for ages but it uses very old very "stable" builds but i'd like something I can keep as up to date as possible
Arch is up to date right
>>
>>61012200
lmao, yeah, lets suggest arch to noobs so they ask even more stupid questions itt
>>
>>61012218
Debian stable, obviously.
>>
>>61012224
All questions are answers in the wiki.Literally every problem you can have during install is documented.Even obscure drivers(broadcom)

I have reason to believe that while upgrading from Jessie to Stretch I've fucked a few things up. Is there an easy way to remove any redundant or otherwise unneeded packages?

to be more specific I want to m ake sure it has the latest stuff as possible.
Stuff like the latest GCC or the latest aria2 or latest rtorrent or whatever.
Total bias to whatever distro can make something like this possible
>>
>>61012093
Missing security updates, plus you probably should use backports too.

https://debian-handbook.info/browse/stable/apt.html#id-1.9.10.7

(Apparently not yet updated for stretch, but you get the point).
>>
>>61010655
Yeah you can add the non free repo just like you would on Debian.
>>
Can you install systemd on devuan?
>>
>>61012463
cutting edge and servers have never gone hand in hand anon, stick to muh debian or rhel for that shit.
If you are feeling really brave go for fedora server.
