Do you guys actually use a ThinkPad or is it a meme?

The reason we use a thinkpad is that with emacs you are not supposed to have to take your fingers off the home row of keys:

and using the mouse takes your fingers off the home row, thus the nub mouse

some of the thinkpads are actually really good. if you can get past the business/dull look of it they are perfect in almost every way and very cheap too

the thing is if you try to buy a computer that looks nice also, you do not get many of the features thinkpads can offer. for example macs sacrifice a shit ton just to be slim (ports, battery, shitty keyboard etc)

so it just makes thinkpads a no brainer for people who just want a good computer

heres a guide ive seen a few times and holds up pretty well. if you want one at about 200-300 dollars or less this is a safe bet.

if i was going to get one i'd probably buy the t560, people keep claiming it has amazing battery life and thats all i care about

what makes it bad? I have a macbook air 2015 alongside my desktop, and I like the keyboard. keys are very quiet, easy to press and haven't worn down at all. Very comfortable, I like that they don't stick out. What do people complain about?

It wouldn't really be possible to do that. There are no modern processors without the intel or AMD backdoors. The company would have to create their own processor and then intel/amd/both would sue them for copyright/patent shit. The only reason they don't sue each other is because it would mutually assured destruction.

I have a T420 and it's a nice laptop. I use my desktop at home though.

I use an X220, and it's a slow piece of shit. Neither the iGPU nor CPU can decode high-bitrate 1080p video without dropping frames. And the heat-pipe is tiny, and cannot cool it without throttling. And not to mention the abysmal screen. But for the price, and for the good keyboard, and for being completely serviceable (which can't be said for any modern laptop), it's still worth it.

starting with the 40 series they really lost a lot of their appeal when they changed from cool, innovative flagships to gutless fleet shitboxes favored by luddites and attention seeking CS undergrads playing pretend professional, really turned me off once I thought about it

but I still collect them on the side and have been using them since the 600E is relevant, that isn't likely to change any time soon
