still that the firefox dev team decided to no more maintain the alsa backend. i have instantly left firefox when i heard this. in chromium, you can import everything from firefox (even the browsing history) with only 2 mouse clicks (bookmarks->import bookmarks and settings). fuck firefox, fuck mozilla. their browser has been garbage and technology obsolete since a few years now. i should have left when they fired Brendan eich for though crime. Mozilla deserves to die on both a technology point and on an ideology point. please, don't use firefox nor any mozilla products anymore.

So I chose Ubuntu as babbys first Linux to dualboot with Windows 10 on my HP craptop. The thing is I have to walk the BIOS to the right EFI every time i wanna boot Ubuntu. I would like to run grubx64.efi by default. The BIOS offers a customized boot path option which I have set to highest priority, that should work, right? Now what path do I actually type in? Or how do I find the correct path in the first place?

How stable is Unity on Arch? and is Arch by default only going to download stable updates or do you have to set this up? Also, let's say someone develops a program that uses dependencies from the AUR, if one dependency is compromised isn't the program that uses it compromised as well? wouldn't it be better to just use something like Ubuntu or Fedora where default repos are controlled by the developers?

Probably going to get insulted for this, but does desktop GNU/Linux have any audio enhancement software? When I am using Windows I tend to use this Dolby thing that makes dialogue crisper and normalizes volume, and on Android I use Viper for similar purposes. Watching videos/listening to music on GNU/Linux has seemed lackluster in comparison.
>>
>>60980536

don't touch audio
audio engineers work hard to make things sound the best on default settings

I'm really tired of Windows, I've using linux on my workstation(laptop) since about a year but now want to change my desktop to linux too.
My only concern is the drivers for my RX 470 and i7 7700. I don't play video games too much but I'll probably install Portal 2 and Payday 2 via Steam and want to have a decent 1080p60 perform.

So is there proper drivers for my GPU/CPU on linux(any distro)?

Just install a distro on a flash drive and run it from there, if you use something like Ubuntu there will be a program that automatically fetches proprietary drivers and you will see which driver is available.

>>60980563
Yeah, I know it's heresy, but I like the way it sounds better for whatever reason. Turning on a flat EQ and a little bit of whatever the hell "dialogue enhancer" is, as well as the normalizer really makes a difference when trying to hear quiet parts of shows like Elementary over the sound of my AC unit blasting in a shoebox apartment. Using speakers, obviously.

For Viper I like to use it's binaural audio thing because it really does help my Ety-MK5s not be as bothersome.

>>
>>60980655
Hello there! You seem to have used the term "open source".
The term "open source" was created by a group of people that did not want to be associated with the free software movement. When I say "free" software (which is one of the alternatives preferable to "open source"). It's not about price; in that case I would say "gratis", or "free as in free beer". It's about "freedom"! This is what the free software movement is fighting for.
So what is "free" software? Free software is any software that guarantees the user the four essential software freedoms:
> 0. Run the program as you wish.
> 1. Study the source code and change it so it does what you wish.
> 2. Redistribute exact copies of the program.
> 3. Distribute your modified version of the program.
Some people decided that they wanted to restrict the user; but being able to study and modify the "open source" code is not enough! This is directly hurting the cause of the free software movement because it takes away the sociological "freedom" aspect of free software and turns it into a technological one.
So for those reasons I ask that in the future you use the terms "free", "free/libre" or, if necessary "FLOSS" (short for "free/libre and open source"), though the latter should still be avoided.

I'm trying to use awk in a bash script, but the location of what I'm getting with awk changes in different OSs.

I put a variable so the user changes from there, but I have no idea how to pass that to awk correctly.

So far I have something like this:

location='8'
... | awl '{print $7}' | ...

I want to replace that $7 with the variable, how do I do that?

/ The main argument for the term "open source software" is that "free \

There are system wide equalizer that you can set to emphasize the mids. I didn't even know system wide volume normalizing was a thing, what does it do? Like if you are playing music and a sound notification goes off does it make it the same volume as the tunes so you can't hear it? What if there is a quiet but in a movie, does it make it louder?

Look at your logs. First would be dmesg while plugging the in, see is they are recognized as input devices. Second look at X logs to see if they are auto detected.

Is it safe to use rsync to copy stuff over my local network? SCP only seems to pull about 2 MB/s but rsync inexplicaly does about 80. This is from one computer on my local network to the other.

I'm only using rsync because it's a big file and I need to be able to restart it if it gets interrupted. Would rsync be connecting to anything outside of my local network, or not encrypting it, even though i used -rsh=ssh?

rsynch can go machine-to-machine without any intermediary but by default, iirc, it uses an ssh transport so you need to make sure it is set up to talk to a rsync server. ssh is slow because of the encryption (and small buffers), so you can tell it to use no/worse encryption or just use tar+netcat or a wrapper around them to get line-speed.

youre looking at it backwards. dont look at it as someone trying to gain access to one specific Intel AM enabled machine (though that is a concern too). Look it as someone going through and fishing data from as many AM machines as possible, which when considering like MOST modern computers have this feature, its apparent that there is a vulnerability here that has no good reason to exist

Some colleagues of mine and I are planning to install a Linux OS on the computers in our school. The computers are around 9-10 years old and they have been running Windows 7/8/10. The reason why we've thought about installing Linux on them is because we'd want our students (11-14 years old) to work in a safe and stable envirnoment: we're going to use the computers mostly for web browsing, media entertainment and writing docs/presentations . Now to the real question: what is the lightest Linux distribution that can work on relatively old machines? Bear in mind that this distribution should be intuitive and user-friendly as well, because it's addressed to our students. I've installed Ubuntu 16-04 LTS on my old laptop and I've been really happy with that since then, but I'm wondering whether a lighter Linux distribution is available. Thank you in advance!

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Up until now I always added it post installation and that got it up and running, but on the debian9 install I just made, I think it didn't got properly registered because I think the interface wasn't brought up. Even for wired, openvpn runs into issues because /dev/net didn't exist when it tried using them.

I do see a

1. Don't think of distributions so much, what you are concerned with (impact on resources, user-friendliness) is mostly the desktop environment. You can basically install any DE on any distribution.

As DEs go, you generally can't go wrong with xfce. I hear lxqt isn't quite ready yet, otherwise it would be a good option too.

As for the distribution, the best option is the one your local expert has experience with, if you have such a thing. If you have no local expert (yet), the usual choices (Debian/Devuan, Ubuntu) are fine.

So much for practical concerns. For an educational environment, a system that will respect your students' freedoms and educate them to make informed choices about their rights is of the utmost importance. For this reason, I can not recommend Ubuntu, which encourages the use of proprietary software and hides ethical issues away from its users.

11-14 year olds can already read, write and do basic maths. Critical thinking is something they (should) learn from education in general and using free software doesn't oppose that -- in fact, using free software and teaching them about it in relation to proprietary software allows them to apply the critical thought processes in a real-life scenario.
You should also read this: https://www.gnu.org/education/
>>
>>60989047
>What distribution do you recommend?
Well, since you ask, I recommend Devuan (I choose Devuan over Debian for an ethical reason, but they are almost exactly the same thing).

Ubuntu, as you probably know by now, is a Debian derivative (so is Devuan). Differences between Ubuntu and Debian are mostly either ethical or cosmetic, a user familiar with one will largely be at home in the other.
>>
>>60989220
>it's too big to properly audit
Don't turn the ethical issue of software freedom into a technological or logistical one.
>has way too much power for an init system
So write software that doesn't depend on it, or write a modular init system that can replace systemd while allowing you to use systemd in part of substitute it fully while keeping the programs you're using.

Because of this, it is inaccurate to refer to the OS as "Linux," and doing so covers up the fact that this space-worthy operating system is the result of a decades-long commitment to ethical values.

>That's why we ask that, when you talk or write about the operating system (in space or otherwise), you help us by referring to it as "GNU/Linux," and encourage your friends to do the same. There are gnus up there in space, along with the penguins.

I tend to copy /usr/local/bin/ too since I put all my scripts in there.

But dealing with the numerous intricacies and completely batshit breakages that they will regularly come up against will take up time that would be better spent with other activities. And this is what I mean, this is the same selfish thinking that gets other niche ideas added to mainstream curriculums instead of just being made available as electives. People that think they are 100% correct, that they are the righteous heroes campaigning against ignorance are inevitably small minded people who have trouble dealing with reality.

Only serve to illustrate how dependent upon unethical, nonfree software we have become. There will be those that choose convenience over freedom, and they are free to make that choice. The objective of a school shouldn't be to push them in either direction (free vs proprietary): It should educate them about the pros and cons of each, and provide learning tools.
School computers typically needn't be the fastest machines ever. The school can buy older machines for which free drivers exist, that are 100% compatible with free software which means there is no incompatibility there. Those who are interested can even learn about programming or systems administration by observing the systems at school, learning from real life examples. That is not possible with nonfree software.
The most important point in favor of adopting free software in education is that the alternative (using proprietary software) means forcing hundreds and thousands of other people to use nonfree software, subjugating them and putting them under the control of the software developers -- privately owned corporations who have no business influencing our education! Also, when students are forced to use e.g. Microsoft Office at school, and they have to do homework, they are not only forced to use this nonfree software at school (which is bad enough), but also at home!

It's systemd, the distro. With Fedora you are first for RedHat technologies which give a shit about the community.

You're right. I just get triggered by those words at this point.
>>
>>60989187

You keep talking as if there were any kind of imposition being suggested.

Teaching people about their rights, like freedom and privacy, and how their use of computers relates to those rights, so that they can make educated choices about it, is what is being suggested.

It is exactly the opposite of an imposition. It is completely a subset of critical thinking.

You are most likely correct when you claim that freedom and privacy are niche ideas in education. You and I both agree that is a terrible thing and should change.

They package software and make it convenient for me to download and use their package manager, idiot. That's all normal people do who aren't retards. People who actually use the software.
Idiots and retards like you who have Windows installed and run distributions in a virtual machine just to type a few commands in their terminal emulator are those who care about buzzphrases like that.

PS1 goes in your .bashrc
.bashrc is read by bash whenever a bash process is started or when you $ source ~/.bashrc .
When .bashrc is being sourced, the prompt is set according to PS1.
PS1 does not need to be available to subprocesses, therefore it need not be exported as an environment variable.
Exception: when you start a new interactive subshell that doesn't read .bashrc (like you did when you $ sh'ed). In that case that shell would read its own config file. In that case, you should add PS1 as a local variable to that shell's config file instead of exporting it as an environment variable.

HP's Uefi is garbage. Dualbooted openSuse and Win10 for a while on.my hp laptop. Don't know about your model, but for me there was no easy, convenient way. You either had to select the right OS manually or exchange the windows.efi file with the grub file, so that the HP OS loader loads grub instead of windows. But this is obviously dangerous and stupid. I suggest you just stick with Windows and run Linux in a VM. If you like it, you install Linux and run Win10 in the VM.
>>
>>60990266
Not to mention I'd have to do it for each shell's profile. Fucking why?
>>
>>60990266
For testing purposes exporting actually makes sense, yes.
BEGIN autism
However, I asked you to post your PS1, meaning the variable which you put in your .bashrc. I did NOT ask you to post a command that would let me test some PS1.
Also, if anything, I would ask you to
$ sed "s/\(\s\+\)\(PS1=.*\)/#\1\2\n\1PS1=${ANONS_PS1}/" -i ~/.bashrc && . ~/.bashrc

END autism
>>
>>60990343
alias .b='vim ~/.bashrc && source ~/.bashrc'

Would be a less autistic approach.

or if you insist on sed
new_ps1() {
sed -i '/^PS1.*$/ s/^#*/#/' .bashrc; echo "PS1='$1'" >> .bashrc; . .bashrc
}
$ new_ps1 "\h@\u \w \\$\[$(tput sgr0)\]"

It's not using nonfree software that's unethical (that is entirely the user's choice), but it is _creating_ nonfree software and _promoting_ nonfree software which are unethical.
Unlike Skype, where you pressure the other person into using the same proprietary software you use, I don't push people to use 4chan. I don't promote it.
I should really contact the FSFE and ask them if they would be interested in funding a free, anonymous imageboard. Personally, I don't have the time to write the software on my own (having a part-time job, being a full-time student AND maintaining several other -- admittedly small -- software projects) but it's a project I'd gladly contribute to.
