>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

If you want help:
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA).
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate.
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?

CPUs:
>G4560 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 is stretching it, but I got mine to 3.9 ghz with the stock cooler.
>R5 1500x - All you really need for 60fps with power to spare; Don’t get an i5 right now.
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; Get a 1600x if you don't OC
>R7/Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/mixed use; Not required for just gaming.

GPUs:
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>RX 560 and GTX 1050Ti - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games
>RX570 - 1080p@60hz at high, running most maxed older games at 144+hz
>GTX1060 3gb paired with a g4560 for those with a really tight budget.
>RX580 and GTX1060 - 1080p@60hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; Go for the RX580 if you can.
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@144hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p.
>GTX 1080 Ti - 1440p@144 hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games; You're kind of going overboard with this one.
>Titan XP - 4k@60hz maxed in most, if not all games; You don't need this unless you're curing cancer or something.

General:
>ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
>Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
>NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.

Please be nice to people asking questions. No fanboy arguments please.

Moving in a couple of months trying to find a new monitor/tv for when I get to the new place. Cant decide between

Sony XBR55X850D
>Native 120hz also has 4k for furture proof stuff but a tv

Seiki Pro SM40UNP
>40 in monitor
>4k 60hz

I can't really run 4k yet. I am open to other suggestions. Really want something at least 40in for space.

Also think my mobo and ram are really holding me back. Should I upgrade or wait until a graphics card that can actually run 4k to upgrade everything?

Thinking about doing a new build and jumping from Mini ITX to mATX. There seems to be very limited selections of decent mATX cases

Can anyone speak as to the quality of the Silverstone TJ08 for a build today? I love the case but I fear that I/O might be not so great and cable management might not be up to par.

Post/Recommend other mATX cases that aren't fucking huge and basically ATX cases in disguise.

I'm building a microATX ryzen computer for 1440p/144Hz and VR gaming. Until we find out whether vega is good or not I'll be moving an XFX r9 290 into it. I can't find 2x8gb 3200mHz ram thats compatible so I'm sticking with 3000mHz. I'm also interested in trying to make it silent (hence the H60)
Looking for opinions and suggestions.
>>
>>60978890
Liquid coolers have a pump in them (which is noisy) and this is a single 120mm fan you got in there
You'd get less noise with a similarly priced air cooler.
>>

Nothing wrong about TV, as long as the response time is decent.

>>60978890
I have that mobo and processor.
Yeah the RAM compatibility is still lacking. It's great otherwise. You can OC comfortably to 3.6 3.7 on the stock cooler. Whch is more than enough for gaming, and is relatively quiet.
That RAM is fine.
Yeah, I'd wait for Vega aswell.
I recommend getting a Hitachi Ultrastar 3TB for like $66 usd. It's the best price/quality

>I'm also interested in trying to make it silent (hence the H60)
Topkek. With the H60 you'll achieve the opposite. Get a silent air cooler instead.
RAM issues should be fixed with ne next big BIOS update, i wouldn't worry about it. SSD is decent, maybe get the PNY CS1311 or Samsung 850 Evo instead. Do swap the WD Blue for Toshiba P300 though.
Case looks decent, personally i'd go for a Define S or C. Regardless what case you chose, add silent fans like Noctua or Be Quiet to it, most come with only one fan.
The speakers are trash, do yourself a favour and buy powered monitors or at least decent bookshelf/desktop speakers.

>I don't know much about amd.
AMD has a long history of engineering breakthroughs, the biggest one they often brag about is how they invented the 64 bit CPU with the Athlon 64, which all CPU's use today. To this day, a lot of people still refer to it as AMD64 when talking about ANY 64 bit chip..'

This doesn't mention Ryzen since the video's a few years old, but Ryzen is a huge breakthrough as well. The RYzen program was the pet project of AMD's current CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, pic related.

>>
>>60979091
The 7700k is the king of 144 fps gaming. so long as you have nothing else going on in the background. The 7700k's performance can be attributed to its fantastic single-thread performance and high clockspeeds.

However, the current recommendations for gaming builds center around AMD's Ryzen processor line ups. The Ryzen 5 1600 is the golden CPU at the moment. It had 6 cores and 12 threads (2 more cores, and 4 more threads than the 7700k) which gives it amaxing performance, especially since it's a minimum of $100 cheaper but can match the 7700k in many games, if not being slightly slower. The 1600 comes ahead when you do anything other than gaming though. It's better at streaming, multi-tasking, and running CPU--intensive programs.
And as a bonus, while only the K chips in Intel's line ups are overclockable, ALL of AMD's Ryzen chips are unlocked and overclockable

>is there a mother for amd that is equivalent to asus z270f?
Yes. AMD B350 boards are equivalent to Intel's B250 boards. BUT The B350 boards support crossfire and overclocking.
The full-fat X370 chipsets though matches features with Intel's Z270 boards, and I believe has more PCIe lanes as well, though someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

>are all aios compatible?
Not at the moemnt. Ryzen was released a few months ago. However, many companies are already working on brackets for Ryzen's AM4 platform. Cooler Master already has a bunch and if you don't have the bracket, just go on their site and they will send you the AM4 bracket for your kit free of charge.

Things will most likely become cheaper, take a look at the price history.

>>60979378
Some report to not being able to POST at all but that's probably with some shit RAM.
If you have wide spread RAM like Corsair LPX or G.Skill Ripjaws V it will boot at 2133 at worst case. My new Ryzen with Ripjaws V 3200 CL16 booted at 2133 without issues.

reposting this in new bread too since last time you were so kind as to give me some solid advice

I've decided to build my own pc, this is the second time I do so, but being the first almost fifteen years ago, I might be very much out of the loop.

I've a budget of ~700€ (the maximum being 800€), I'm from Italy.
I would use this mainly as a gaming platform (I already have a laptop for work related things); I play quasi exclusively single player games, and something that could run nicely fallout 4, witcher 3 and the latest asscreeds (pls don't judge) would be ideal.
I already have a monitor, it's an Asus vw222s (1680x1050, 80.2/75 hz refresh rate) and I don't plan for the time being to buy a new one; mouse+keyboard would be a nice addition.

What do you recommend me? What's your advice in the matter?
I already have a vague idea, thanks to a lot of fiddling around pcpartpicker, but I would like to hear your opinion.

thanks in advance

Think of it this way. Do you do ANYTHING else running in the backgrounds while gaming? Even streaming software.
If yes, get Ryzen.
You can change the cooler to one that works with Ryzen. Not every company has brackets available. Cooler Master is very good at it. if your kit doesn't have an AM4 bracket, they will send you one free of charge, so look at their coolers

>>
>>60980481
Yes but difference will vary depending on your usage. For gaming while noticeable it's still not that big of an issue, for applications it is.
The price difference shouldn't be that high, maybe $10-20 and that's worth the investment. It's highly recommended to get at least 2666 for Ryzen.

>>60980519
>have a make a huge jump in the market
No. Intel still holds most if not all B2B contracts for OEM sellers which means AMD will have a tough time entering that market, for now.
Idk about B2C but i guess Ryzen made a noticeable cut into the market. That's probably why Intel rushed the X299 Comubstion Lake meme that's being btfo right now.

>>60980570

Even with the discount you got, you still paid $20 more than what you would've with an R5 1600 build and yet you're still getting a massively inferior CPU for the tasks you do

You want Ryzen. Don't argue, just get Ryzen.
>Got the i5 for $120 because employee
Seal not broken yet? Sell it for $200 and buy a R5 1600 or R7 1700.

Only downside is that an ITX build is not really a good choice with Ryzen since the only ITX mobos are from Biostar, but mATX should be fine.

DON'T.

suggestions:

>Get a Ryzen 1700 completely destroys the i5 . Curently the best bang/buck for modeling and rendering, since rendering LOVES those 8 cores and 16 threads. You can OC it to 3.6 super stable with the stock cooler.
>Get a Windows 10 pro key from Kinguin.net
>The AM4 ITX boards from AsRock and Gigabyte should be rolling out at the begining of next month or so.
>you can get a kit of 2X8GB 3200 RAM at newegg for $115

if you get Ryzen you might have a system that lasts you as long as your old laptop did.

My question is - since the rx 4xx/ rx 5xx efficiency for Ethereum will drop soon AND AMD announced there will be Ryzens with B2 stepping released sometime soon, will it be wise to wait and buy a Ryzen cpu B1 + a miner's rx 580? Is that a viable way to get a somewhat uptodate PC and save some money?

Ok anon, this build has some serius logical issues.

the 1700X comes with the Wraith spire Max, wchich is probably better than the 212EVO.
the Taichi is pretty much the best AM4 board out there. get it if you can pay the price, but you dont "really need it".
get and SSD if you don`t have one already.

get a good PSU at least gold rated and 600-650W to have some good headroom. If you're already dropping the dough for the 1080Ti you probably have some spare cash for a decent PSU.
get this RAM or better.

Satisfactory is the correct term. But for a build like yours you should really not cheap out on the PSU.

G.Skill Ripjaws V 3200 CL16 or Corsair LPX 3000 CL15 for value, G.Skill Trident Z 3200 CL14 for performance, this one will be expensive.
For the cooler.. well, there are many options. Thermalright Silver Arrow, Macho Rev. B, True Spirit Direct/Power, Noctua NH-D15, NH-U14S, Scythe Fuma, Mugen 5, Be Quiet idk if it's compatible and yeah.. there are a lot of options.

I don't really know my way around that specific bios. Read your manual that should get you moving. most DDR4 non-budget modules come with an XMP profile, which the system detects automatically to apply the Memory OC.

you may change the "memory profile" from "auto" to "XMP" or something like that, probably in the "OC tweaker" or however it's called in your UEFI

I have some bad news for you anon, you might not be able to find any of the AMD GPUs on stock or at their MSRP beacuse of the cryptomining GPU crysis.
If you're doing Video editing you might want to be interested on getting a 1060 or 1070, since their CUDA cores help a LOT.
Also the 1600 is recommended over the 1600X, since you can just OC the 1600 to match the eprfomrance and comes with a great stock cooler. so you don't actually need an afermarket one.

Video editing eats a lot of ram ... fast ram so you better consider higher frequency , at 3000MHz or above.

sure, a bit pricy but yeah it's good.

Not sure about software but in premiere pro & da vinci the difference between the 1070 and rx 480 is pretty small, and the 1070 has 1,5x the number of cuda cores the 1060 has

I'm looking at a Gigabyte Gaming K7 for a ryzen 1700 build that I've been slowly putting together. Is there something wrong with that board?

I'm asking because of a deal that almost seems to be too good to be true that you can get from NE. Like with the combo and promo code savings I can get the R7 1700 and Gaming K7 for under $470 shipped.

I just want to make sure I'm not getting a bad board, and this is my first build.

nothing wrong witht that MoBo

Nope, that's what the site is for. Secondary question; Since I've only started looking at parts and models since I got the urge to do an upgrade, I haven't had time and don't know a good way to learn; are there major releases or industry cycles coming to term shortly that would justify putting off a new comp for a month or two?

Can you elaborate or tell me where to read about it? I'm curious.

And how important are CPUs? I just want a box for playing modern games, but I'd heard a rumor that splurging on a CPU might be more rewarding than a GPU, as they tended to have a longer shelf life? Buy good CPU once, buy ~okay~ graphics card every two years for upgrade purposes? Is that vaguely coherent and/or correct?
>>
So friend's rig broke, and he's just going to upgrade the entire thing. After some research, he's going with https://pcpartpicker.com/list/FfnY7h

Is there a better motherboard for that price range? I read reviews on the asrock pro4 and the gigabyte gaming 3, people were saying that it lacked features for overclocking, or that it was tedious. Should my friend spend a little more for a better board?

Also RAM prices are high right and now as I understand it should start decreasing in 2018. Not something you'd hold off building a PC for but might make 8GB a more attractive choice over 16GB if that amount is enough and you're on a tight budget. That's what I'm doing anyway.

What did I get wrong?

I know to look for a relatively decent PSU, and can throw enough money at G/CPU to get gud, but I have no metrics for picking anything else here.
>>
>>60985812
paying for windows 10
you can get genuine windows 10 pro keys on ebay for literally $10
>>
>>60985812
oh and a 2tb drive should be maybe $15 more than a 1tb
>>
>>60985812
oh and the ram speed is garbage
you want at least ddr4 2800, especially for ryzen
>>
>>60985812
Drop that cooler, the stock one is actually better.
You can get a key for Windows 10 for $25 on kinguin.net
That's some low priced RAM, anon. Do you actually need 32Gb?
If you can find a kit that's 2666 or above, that would be beneficial to ryzen. 3000-3200 is recommended.
>>
>>60985864
>>60985837
also inb4 "why are higher ram frequencies important for ryzen"

the multiple cores in ryzen communicate which each other on what AMD calls "infinity fabric"

infinity fabric's speed is inherently linked to RAM speed. faster ram translates to better speeds
>>
>>60985864
>1700x
>Stock one is better
NANI?!
>>
>>60985896
not him but yeah actually
AMD put a shitload of effort into making better-than-decent stock coolers that compete with and even outperform the sub-$35 third party air cooler market

their new Wraith coolers work almost as well as a Hyper 212 Evo in some cases. SOME.
>>
>>60985864
>>60985894
Thank you. If I drop to 16GB, 3200 is pretty doable.
Are off-brand/fly-by-night RAM brands a particular threat?
>>
>>60985915
The joke here is the x variants of the Ryzen chips don't come with stock coolers.
>>
>>60985919
well don't buy weird shit like Kingdian or Kingspec. anything with a metal heat spreader should be alright

>>60985920
just goes to show that even if AyyyyyyMD is back, they still haven't quite got ALL their shit together

still love 'em though
>>
>>60985919
>>60985864
Oh, and the site is telling me that the CPU I selected doesn't include a stock cooler.

Should I be upgrading or sticking with the T2?
>>
>>60985928
>well don't buy weird shit like Kingdian or Kingspec. anything with a metal heat spreader should be alright
"G.Skill Ripjaws V series"?
>>
>>60985938
g skill is reputable enough. that's fine
>>
>>60985928
The K variants of intel chips don't come with stock coolers as well.
>>
>>60985931
212 or H7
>>
>>60985943
oh yes, i'm well aware as an i7-3770k owner (who really has no reason to upgrade but is very, very, VERY happy to see AMD doing well nonetheless)

i feel if the X variants also came with the Wraith coolers, it would've really stuck it in Intel's craw, is all. they've already knocked them off their feet. why not kick while they're down?
>>
>>60985812
oh and ignore anyone memeing about Zotac being a bad brand

all of my Zotac cards still work. i can't say the same for my Gigabyte, EVGA, or Asus cards
>>
>>60985812
not very important at all but consider a different case with better airflow and an external dvd writer

they're maybe 5 dollars and i really doubt you'll be using your dvd drive that often anyway
>>
>>60985994
maybe 5 dollars more*
>>
>>60985994
That's true. What's a good way to estimate airflow on a case's shop posting?
>>
>>60986002
there.... isn't really anything like that, as far as i know
pick whatever looks nice and is in your price range, then go to the manufacturer's website and look at specifications
that's all i can suggest
>>
>>60986002
and make no mistake, that bitfenix case is quite nice to begin with. it could be even better with a total ommission of slots for optical drives, is all

Still including the Logitech - Z323 30W 2.1ch Speakers. Total of $1333.83 sans OS and potentially monitor upgrade (still deciding if I need one, will have to look up my monitor's details when I shouldn't be asleep).

Thermaltake squatbox seems a little more open than most boxes I've seen, so I'm inclined to hope it's an upgrade over the bitfenix.
Compatability notes:
>The Cooler Master - Hyper 212 LED 66.3 CFM Rifle Bearing CPU Cooler may require a separately available mounting adapter to fit the ASRock - AB350M Pro4 Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard.
>>
>>60986080
basically meaning that the hyper 212 may not come with an am4 bracket because it could've been an older stocked version
>>
>>60986080
You can order a AM4 mounting bracket for a few dollars with your order. Some Mobo even throw them in for free.
>>
>>60986080
also i've built a rig using that thermaltake case, i fucking love them
just make sure the 212 will fit, heightwise. you needing an AM4 bracket is a different scenario entirely, but you do need to make sure the 212 isn't too tall
>>
>>60986080
>he actually got the red leds
anon you're cute
>>
>>60986136
Red leds are cool.
It is the yellow ones you don't mess with.

That's not funny. That's how my dog died.
>>
>>60986117
Whew. Okay, I wasn't recognizing it, but actually looking it up like a non-idiot makes it both familiar and I would expect relatively cheap.

>>60986121
160mm height has me pretty worried, I'll concede. At least the fan orientation is horizontal rather than vertical.

>>60986136
t-thanks, anon. (Red LEDs? Where?)
>>
>>60986197
Some 212 come with fans with red leds.

Any recommended 240/280mm liquid coolers? I'm looking to OC the shit out of my 6600k for 1080p/144hz gaming. Already overclocked my GPU.
I've heard the deepcool captain 240EX is pretty good for price/ performance and noise, but there are rumors of leaks. The Corsair h100i is really popular, but I've heard the included fans are quite loud. Is the h100i just the same thing but with a thicker rad?
Or if any of you don't feel like answering, pointing me towards a place with info would also be appreciated.

So i found some cheap used ram that I might buy.

Currently my only option is DDR4-2133 ram.

Found someone selling m378a1k43bb1(https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIAA3D3VD7376&cm_re=m378a1k43bb1-_-9SIAA3D3VD7376-_-Product) for $40 and I have this mobo:

https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-Z170-HD3P-rev-10#sp

and I plan to get a i5-6500. Is this ram compatible? What all do I gotta look out for?
>>
>>60986365
Sorry, to clarify, I meant to ask the difference between h100i and h100i GTX.
>>
How do you guys get Windows?
You don't include it in you partpickers, but you also go for the gaming stuff (so obviously you won't go with linux)

Get them cheap off grey sites.
There is some site that sell them for like 5 bucks. But if you think those are shady, Kinguin sells OEM keys for 25 bucks.
Ebay for a W7 key and then upgrade is another alternative. The only downside is you have to install W7 and then upgrade.

can someone redpill me on laptop gpus?

we have laptop sales at my uni twice a year and you can get some really good one for like 50% off. now I want to replace my year old zbook15 with the newest zbook15 g3 (depending on the speccs). the only downside is that the gpu is really lacking. it's a quadro m2200m or some shit. and its my understanding that there are almost no MXM 3.0a form factor gpus. the alternative is a thinkpad but there the gpu is soldered on?
what do?

10 pro keys are $10 on ebay though

so basically a gtx 950m
it's shit

What is the opinion on MSI AM4 boards?
Reviewers largely doint point to the real disadvantages.
How are their BIOSes? regular updates?

Go to gigabyte's site and download the manual. The manual usually consist of a list of RAM that it is compatible with.
>>
>>60986691
and that's all the ram I can use? I can't use any of the rams that aren't listed there?
Why wouldnt it be compatible with some other DDR4 i linked though. That sucks ass
>>
>>60986710
That is the RAM they guarantee will work with your board. Any other RAM is a crapshot which might or might not work.
>>
>>60986729
M378A1G43DB0 is on that list, I got a chance to get a M378A1K43BB1 for shit cheap

how do you feel the chances are that itll work with it
>>
>>60986772
M378A5143DB0-CPB
and
M378A1G43DB0-CPB are on the list i mean which doesn't seem vastly far from "M378A1K43BB1-CPB"
>>
>>60986781
I can't tell you. All I can say is models on the list = 100% can work. Models not on the list = might work. Might not work. Even if they are just "slightly" different.

is ordering a shitty i3 from china worth it

Asrock B350 pro4 is a good board

genuine question, what makes it a good board?

The gaming 3 has kind of shitty VRM and costs more

The only gigabyte AM4 boards I recommend are the X370 Gaming 5 (the one I bought) and K7
Those have good VRM (6x40A for the core and 2+2 for the SOC), good audio, useless but fancy LED, and a shitload of ports
