despite those charts it seems like it is completely random if your HDD will work for just a year or a whole decade. so many different reports and opinions.

I still have some older spinpoint samsung HDDs of which many claimed they are shit but one is from 2003 and still works fine.
I think the only thing certain is that maxtor HDDs or the older deathstar hitachi ones are not a good idea.
