Shane usually turns around a service in about a week, but you may have to call and ask if it's done after a week as he can sometimes forget to call you and let you know.

Btw my Rolex Datejust 116223 he serviced and regulated for me is approaching 60 days at +0 total...

>>
>>60976828
I'm happy for your datejust, but are you checking the deviation to figure out what position to leave it in? The real test is if it can go 60 days at +0.0 without you checking it against an outside time source to decide how to store it - I'm assuming you can't.

What should I get for like $2k or maybe $3k? Something mostly casual and everyday on a bracelet, maybe a diver but hopefully not since I already have a few. It's a graduation present, so hopefully something I can keep for a long time.

Sinn seems pretty nice, or maybe some of the cheaper Tudors. Getting an ETA at this price range seems a little lame though, unless it's at least a chrono or something and not just a 2824.

It's regulated to run fractionally slow crown down and fractionally fast in all other positions, so by design the regulation requires switching between crown down (to approximate being worn when not on the wrist) with being left in any of the other positions to gain time overnight. If I had it regulated to run exactly +0.0 in any one position it would not be able to run +0.0 in mixed on/off the wrist use.

You didn't understand my point. Any watch with positional variance can run at +0.0 if you have access to time.gov. My point is that a long-run +0.0 average doesn't really speak at all to the accuracy of the watch if (for example), the wearer checked the current deviation every night to figure out whether to leave the watch crown down or dial up. If the way home was calibrated so that the wearer knew that dial up four nights out of seven and crown up three nights out of seven would produce a +0.0 over sixty days, and it did, that would be an impressive regulation.

Not trying to talk down how well the DJ is regulated - the rates in every position are quite good - but the +0.0 over 60 days is the same kind of +0.0 that radio controlled watches can achieve.

>>60977357
It's regulated so that when I'm wearing it every day I can leave it dial down overnight and it will stay ~+0.0 without having to alter which positions it's left in when not being worn. Now that you mention this I'm going to double check but I think crown down when not worn during the day and crown up overnight should also offset each other without having to check.

I'll get back to you on that one.

Watch plebeian here wanting to get my first decent watch.

I have been looking at entry Seiko's and Citizen's, but I was wondering what you guys think about MVMT?

I'm looking for a daily watch in the 100$-200$ range preferably , 250$ at the most, not really willing to spend much more than that because I have no idea what is good or bad.

Any recommends for a daily watch for working, going fishing, hiking etc..?

Good enough that i really only adjust the time every few weeks. By then it's about 10-15sec out plus or minus. I used to check it daily out of curiosity and it was 0-3 sec plus or minus so it seems to run differently on my wrist compared to it just sitting there, and so balances out.

After doing some research and lurking these threads I was looking at grabbing a Seiko SNKA10 as my first watch.

I remember there being a buyer's guide in one of the previous OPs, or maybe someone posted it early on. I found it on Amazon for $90, but is there a better place to shop for a specific watch? Or am I doing it wrong entirely by shopping for a watch online and should go to a brick and mortar location instead?

Get a vintage tudor princess in stainless or silver. Works with almost any style of dress, not too expensive (should be able to find one for $300 or so), high quality movement, will be maintainable into the next century, avoids the stigma of daddy's money Rolex.

If you want a cheaper watch, get whatever Anne Klein you like best. If you want a cheaper, more stylish watch, get whatever Kate Spade you want, but accept that you're paying for the brand, not the movement or case quality.

Baited?

I like it. The leather is pretty comfy, but I'm waiting on a replacement strap since I'm not a big fan of deployant clasps. It is hard to see in the light, but the subdials have a subtle concentric pattern. It might be a bit big for small wrists, but I like how it fits me. My only complaint with the watch itself is that the crown is a bit small for my fingers. However, it winds smoothly, which is a nice feeling.

Way back in the dark days of eBay about 10 years ago when you could still find items listed with insufficient descriptions, I came across that L5100 Speedmaster listed as a vintage Speedmaster but without mentioning the movement anywhere in the listing. The only reason I knew it had the L5100 was a picture of the movement.

As a result of that omission, none of the people trawling eBay back then for these things were finding that listing, so I managed to snag it for $400 USD, which was an outrageous steal even back then.

As for servicing, I would normally expect to pay around $500 for a service on a Lemania 5100 movement, plus any parts (the chronograph hand reset spring tends to wear out so those can eventually need replacement). My current watchmaker does chronographs for $350, but he undercharges compared to industry norms for independent watchmakers.

no the Russians made shit watches, shit cameras, shit cars.. and basically made serviceable rocket engines and aircraft.

the US never spent that much of its gdp on military. America also yielded a lot more than USSR ever did.

America also stopped becoming a manufacturing based economy by the late 60s when the japanese started making things equal or better quality for much cheaper, like watches.

other sinn is a 556? i have a non-utc 856 and the date's at 4. tegimented case but i managed to scratch it on a drunken night on the town with the gf so i'm not sure i'd discourage a 556 just because it isn't tegimented.
>>
>>61000684

How do these fucks have the balls to charge 3k for a fucking 2824..
>>
>>61000836

Top grade desu.

And Tudor makes serious modifications to the 2824.

What's the best sub 50 dollar watch in terms of functionality?

don't say the casio f-91w (terrorist watch) because while it is ubiquitous and inexpensive there are better watches nowadays at this price point.
>>
>>61000896
casio W201 :^)
>>
>>61000738
I don't really like any of the Black Bay watches, the smooth-bezel ones are a bit nicer than the regular ones though.

Graduation gift from my dad, he wants me to pick one out. I'm actually sort of drawn to Sinn because he works with airplanes and he got really excited when he saw that Sinn watches look like cockpit gauges. I'm hoping to wear them very regularly, I have other watches to rotate too but I want an everyday sort of watch. I also hope it'll last a long time, I regularly wear a couple of watches that belonged to my dad and my grandfather.

My favorite aesthetically would be the Ranger hands-down if it was like 36 or 38mm, even with the sort of inflated size I think it's beautiful. The gap between the bracelet and case and the long neck on the crown are some sort of weird old-fashioned touches, but I can dig it.

The North Flag has the better movement, and I love the integrated lug design but it's a bit more edgy and doesn't look as timeless, that black ceramic bezel is really weird too.

I love the Sinn dials, the altimeter look appeals to me. The bracelets seem a little ugly, but I want a watch with a bracelet. Also the 856 on the left is tegimented which I hope will help keep the case looking good for a long time. The 556 might be a bit too plain looking, and it just has a basic 2824 with no tegimented finish or any cool stuff.

The Pelagos is a bit big and bold and they really shit up the dial with all the text on the newest version, but again it has a better movement and it's just a great looking watch.

>>61000759
I love divers too, but I kind of want something that's casual but not a diver this time. The Pelagos is so cool looking that I at least have to consider it, though. I love the Explorer too, so Tudor seems like as good a brand of Explorer knock-off as any.
>>
>>61000932
the ranger is the best looking but the movement makes the price hard to swallow. I mean its a really good watch.

Take a look at the damasko models too if you're into the sinn dials.
>>
>>61000932

which one do you think will stay good looking and be remain socially appropriate along the widest vertical social range going forward?

Which one makes you happiest?

Also this is a present he is getting for YOU, whether he thinks so or not, and something that will be serving and telling other people about you for months, years, or decades to come.

So if your father expressed excitement over a watch, tuck that away in your mind as something to consider when getting him a watch, or advising someone else on getting a gift for the man, then go back to focusing on the task at hand
>>
>>61000976
I want to like Damasko but all their watches seems sort of off. That day-date printing looks awful and the blasted finish reminds me too much of my Seiko 5. I'm worried about that with the bead-blasted Sinns too but somehow they don't look quite as cheap. Check out those huge gaps on the endlinks too, nothing about the watch looks like it costs over a thousand dollars.

>That's literally the watch that BTFO the swiss so hard they cancelled the chronometer trials.

They stopped doing observatory chronometer trials because quartz watches had reached the point where it was stupid to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars in R&D just to lose to a quartz watch.

The English watch company Rolex got an A-grade rating Observatory Chronometer in a wriswatch which completely BTFO all of the Swiss companies like Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin which were only able to achieve that in big pocket watches, which by your logic must have resulted in them all throwing in the towel and cancelling everything because apparently that's what normal people do whenever they lose to someone else.

>Seiko males really are this delusional
>>
>>61000932

Damasko fag is right. They have some pretty interesting technology.

Also if you like Sinn, look at the DIAPAL watches. Neat stuff.
>>
>>61001048
The Beta21, which won, was a swiss quartz movement. Hell the 21 in the name comes from the fact that it was a collaboration between 21 swiss watchmakers. Not sure where you're coming from when you say it's the fault of quartz that the trials were cancelled.
>>
>>61001034
The other pics of the bracelet I've found don't have that endlink gap, so not sure what's going on in that pic. Damasko takes the autistic german engineer to an even more extreme than sinn from what I can tell. That said I can't really get past how ugly most of them look to be honest.
>>
>>61001048

Rolex started in the London, UK but moved their base of operations to Switzerland.
>>
>>61001048
Hey so how many Swiss makers ever submitted actual series produced watches to the Neuchatel Observatory for certification, had them pass, and then sold them to the public? Girard Perregaux is literally the only other watchmaker to ever accomplish such a feat.

I grew up around casio illuminator g shock watches.

it wasn't until I was in like 5th grade that I realized that dial watches weren't just for cartoons and grandparents.

I agree the Ranger nice looking in pictures, scaled up to 41mm it's probably going to look like a fucking dinner plate though. The North Flag looks like it would be more wearable. My dad also suggested a Rolex, but the new Explorer is pigfat and I'm too young to be that guy with the fucking Rolex. The Oyster Perpetual is closer in appearance, but I still don't like it as much. I think the North Flag is winning, I need to go to a store this weekend to check the Tudors out side by side. I'll come back and post pics when I buy one, thanks for the help /wt/.

I also found out my dad is still bitter that he gave his brother some money to pick him up a Tudor Sub while on a cruise years ago. When his brother came back he said he was $20 short so he didn't buy the watch and spent the cash fucking bitches the whole trip instead. I guess there's a lesson in there for all of us.

hey guys my g shock keeps fogging up on the inside of the glass, did i fuck up the seal?
>>

>>61001925
To be fair the US was leading in the days of pocketwatches. Maybe the finest watches were Swiss, but tons of affordable and reliable American pocketwatches were crucial to the railroads. With wristwatches all I can really think of is Timex which obviously wasn't winning observatory competitions, but was also important and reliable.

You fucked up bad if there's water in it. Did you replace the battery recently or did water just leak in?

My wrists are over 7 inches but I really like 36mm watches. Smaller watches are just nicer on me and in my opinion. For some reason however people like this?

gonna bite the bullet and get a movement swap performed on my black monster srp307. what do i need to look for on a donor watch other than a 4r36 movement? i'd like to get a kanji date wheel as well

so an industry leader. i didn't say they made the most accurate shit.
though wasn't the Accutron 214 or Hamilton electric the most accurate watch for a few years before Seiko quartz'd everything up?
>>
>>61002771
The hamilton electric wasn't particularly more accurate; it's cool thing was that it didn't need to be wound. The accutron was considerably more accurate than all but the absolute best competition watches, although the esa 9162 and the omega megasonic were more accurate than the 214, and of course the 224 was more accurate still.
