i got my roommate to show me how to install linux and she put on xubuntu. so far i like it, it's enough like windows that i don't feel totally out of my element but it's very fast with a lot of ricing potential

I'd prefer my standard to support Wayland and HiDPI scaling

Standards don't matter in Linux. See the LSB, RPM is the standard package manager yet deb is the most popular.

I use XFCE and it lags ("tears"?) only when I move windows but I've always blamed that on X. LXDE looks ugly and completely uncustomizeable. Things like MATE and Cinammon just seem like bad alternatives to something more complete like Gnome or KDE.
