Does all anime use 4:2:0 subsampling? I'm looking into subsampling and while I understand the benefits it brings, I wonder about the difference in quality between say anime sampled with 4:4:4 compared to 4:2:0. Is it significant or does it get compensated enough when going through a renderer?
>>
>>60978001
Dont think about it dude, what the fuck.
>>
>>60978001
All mainstream delivery uses 4:2:0.
4:2:2: and 4:4:4 are used in production environment and broadcast.
Subsampled chroma gets upscaled and then converted to RGB along with luma, then drawn on screen.
Any "4:2:2" or "4:4:4" anime will have the chroma upscaled, so not only will it waste bitrate but the chroma upscaler may introduce its own artifacts on top of the original source. Long term it's smarter to leave the source be and let client handle upscaling. The quality of that, as all upscaling, depends on the algo used.
>>
Recommended settings/scripts for watching anime? Using Ubuntu btw
>>
>>60978360
>Any "4:2:2" or "4:4:4" anime will have the chroma upscaled
This is sometimes preferable to downscaling the chroma if you're doing 720p rips from an upscaled 1080p source, as the chroma occasionally has detail at 540p that would be lost.
>>
>>60975075
NGU
NNEDI3
SSimSuperRes
>>
>>60978560
It's a stupid situation, if there's interested in quality then downscaling wouldn't be done, if size is the interest then trying to save more chroma won't give as much effect as giving that bitrate to luma.
>>
>>60977528
No,
video-sync-max-video-change=1
and
video-sync=display-resample
do the job.
>>
>>60978649
downscaling a crappy studio bilinear 720p->1080p upscale hardly hurts quality
also, x264 has this mystical
chroma-qp-offset
option that is automagically set to 6 when encoding 4:4:4 so chroma doesn't get bloated to hell

You used 3 different versions of ewa_lanczos, did you expect a dramatic difference? Even on luma the differences between those aren't all that noticeable, on chroma they might very well be outright imperceptible (remember that the idea behind chroma subsampling is that the human eye isn't very sensitive to color).
Or you might be blind, who can say.

SSimSuperRes can't have so many ringing, unless it's a SuperRes from madvr.

But which other algo would have that much ringing? Neither NNEDI3 nor NGU AA are supposed to produce ringing. Anyhow, it's difficult to judge without seeing the source image. With these settings, should I be using hwdec? If I do, it would be vaapi. My laptop is more than powerful enough to use these settings, but the battery dies faster while using software decoding in my experience. With these settings does vaapi make any visual difference, or mess up the colours or filters?

Hopefully asynchronous rendering and presentation. Why is hwdec=no the standard I see in so many configs? Is the hardware support really that bad?

Wouldn't setting it to auto be better since it would let h264 stuff be decoded in hardware and HEVC stuff fall back to software?

I'm largely interested in minimizing mpv's footprint for better battery life on mobile devices. Dare I say, would having hwdec=auto be a better option for Kaby Lake and beyond since they even support HEVC hardware decoding afaik?
>>
>>61003890
Hardware support isn't the problem. 95% of CPUs from the last 5 years can do at least H.264. You only really need hwdec if you have an incredibly weak CPU (core 2 duo tier), and even then it can probably cope with opengl-hq (for h.264). For HEVC hardware is generally preferable, because even decent CPUs take a lot of load decoding it. (Especially 4k, but really, you shouldn't be using hevc to begin with). For 1080p h264, a modern CPU will only be at 10% usage, even with ewa_lanczos. Apparently hardware decoders can screw with the colours and filters etc and make the video look worse, but I haven't seen any proof of this.

That said, if you want to maximise battery, hardware is the way to go. My laptop lasts for about three hours of software decoding h.264 and four hours with hwdec. (Also, for Intel, use hwdec=vaapi, or vaapi-copy. Apparently copy solves some of the quality problems, but I'm not sure how it's different. If anything you'd want hevc to be hardware and h.264 to be software. HEVC software decoding will destroy your battery life.

I want to make webm's with mpv the same way I can take screenshots with mpv. As in, I want to press a button, have it start encoding at whatever point I'm watching at, then a couple seconds later in the video, press another button to stop the encoding and have it spit out a finished webm.
I don't know how something like this would work, or if something like this exists, or if this is even possible, but it'd be fucking neat.

Is there anything like this?

>Is there anything like this?
No, but you can write a script to log the current position when you press a button and then the end positin, and then start encoding. Concurrent encoding is harder, because avconv sets end points based on the initial time you give it
 avconv -ss [start] -t [duration]
. So your best bet is to first set the start and end points and then wait for it to encode.

It's easier to put them all in a file once and then use regex to make commands and execute them at once, instead of passing it all while the video is playing.
>>

bind cycle pause
bind add volume +2
bind add volume -2
bind playlist-next
bind playlist-prev
>>
>>61018141
Your fault for not making a GUI for this.
>>
>>61018165
Use mpc-hc or vlc then.
>>
>>61018094
Depends. But only use them for hevc 1080p+/60fps.
>>
>>61018141
I was expecting a proper key rather than a placeholder "bind".

This is what I was asking for.

Is there something like "media-key-play" or "media-key-next" something so I can use "media-key-play cycle pause" function?

Or does that require me to download a third party program to find out what my media key is sending and somehow translate that into a key mpv would work with? Or do I need to use autohotkey and find a way to bind my media-keys to keyboard keys because mpv does not recognize media-keys?

CHALLENGE: produce an equally sharp mpv upscale to this MadVR upscale with as little noise and artifacting as this upscale, and post repeatable mpv settings for the upscale. MadVR settings for this are NGU AA medium image upscaling, and adaptive sharpen 1.0 + crispen edges 1.0 + anti-ringing filter under upscaling refinement. This image utilizes AMD denoising but you can use mpv's dn3dHQ for an equivalent effect. This challenge has been posted on /g/ many times and /g/ has failed every attempt at it.
Note: your subjective opinion of how nice this looks is irrelevant to this challenge. This is a technological experiment to see if mpv can produce an upscale this sharp without noise or artifacting. Refusing to attempt the challenge because of ambiguous buzzwords will be interpreted as an admission of defeat.
>>
>>61019838
here's mpv screen. note the timecode if you want to attempt the challenge.

desperately need a replacement for mpc-hc since it's trash now. should id ownload the lachs0r or shinichiro build? how do i make sense of any of this i dont know anything about what these scripts or config files do or if i even need them
>>
>>61019959

i'm trying out the shinichiro build. does this player not have an options or settings i can access? how do i make mpv my default player on windows?
>>
>>61019992
put mpv in program files > right click mpv-install.bat > run as administrator > go to default applications in settings and select mpv for video

There are tons of settings, but there's no GUI for them. You'll have to use configuration files, see this thread and previous thread for examples. See https://mpv.io/manual/master/#files-on-windows to know where to put them.

As the owner of a really fucking old toaster, do I gain anything by staying up-to-date on mpv instead of using some version from 2 years ago that worked just fine for me? Other than the cool new OSD.

Bottom looks noticeably blurrier when flipping through both still images, the MPC one looks better overall to me except something feels a little off with the edges.

What's wrong with MPC-HC with LAV + ffdshow. I always see dudes going on about madVR but what, if any, are the actual differences/advantages?

I've just used the standard K-Lite mega installer for years and have never had any problems.
>>
>>61021241
In previous /mpv/ thread, you can see a bunch of settings being tested: >>60950554

They all look blurry and all look pretty much the same and vastly inferior to MadVR. As much as I like mpv, I doubt it will ever come close to MadVR's upscaling quality. It's sad.

>>61021331
You are mistaken. And I don't see a picture of your mpv upscaler. So your argument is invalid.

Stay mad.

MPC-HC works fine by itself. Madvr attached to MPC-HC overrides default scaling options and video output.

K-lite mega or any other "codec packs" are normie tier garbage. Only one relevant is CCCP which is designed around anime. However that too is irrelevant because MPC-HC alone works fine.

The reason why people care about MadVR is because MPC_HC default scalers are well, advanced enough however don't utilize the modern machine's capability to further improve image quality. Madvr had more compute intensive and experimental algorithms dealing with image quality reproduction, specifically when they are being scaled.

MPV also works by itself without any modification, however MPV config files allows an expert anime watcher to configure the player to utilzie advanced shaders, scripts, etc. MPC-HC lacks scripting features. MPV thus has advantage over MPC-HC if you're an advanced user.
>>
>>61021888
I suppose I should have clarified. I know WHY people use madVR but why should I use that over LAV/ffdshow? If the only reason people use madVR is for hardware acceleration than that's completely useless. There is absolutely zero discernible difference between software/hardware acceleration. (Unless you're on some POS chromebook or something)

So other than K-Lite being "normie tier garbage", how does MadVR differ from LAV and/or ffdshow? Like I originally asked.

I actually tested out MPC-HC with madVR a few months ago with all the preferred settings from some guide and there wasn't ANY perceivable difference versus the default MPC-HC with LAV/ffdshow settings.
>>
>>61022505
If your eye cant tell perceived difference, then its not for you.

People with better monitor/gpu/cpu can easily see the difference between difference scalers (especiallly ones where the algos are very different)

It's not me or my equipment.
There is NO DIFFERENCE between hardware/software acceleration/decoding.

Now again, in summation of my original questions; what does madVR do differently/better in comparison with LAV and/or ffdshow. (Both of which also happen to do hardware decoding.) What are the features that set madVR apart? (if there are any)
>>
>>61022693
Yeah. Ive spend two hours yesterday reconfiguring the rules in every imaginable way. 540p still applies first no matter what. It drives me crazy!
>>
>>61022715
madVR doesn't do any decoding. It's not LAV or madvr, it's both. madvr replaces EVR-CP.
>>
>>61022505
>If the only reason people use madVR is for hardware acceleration than that's completely useless.
The fuck? madVR is a renderer. It draws picture to your screen. It has nothing to do with hardware acceleration. You can get high quality upscalers with madvr+smoothmotion+hdr+other shit.

Look at the left side of the A and the hinting. It is a very subtle thing, but bottom looks tighter. Idk, I could just be placebo, but top just looks more aliased to me. Maybe that's not it... perhaps the aliasing on the top just looks more noticeable than it does on the bottom, for me it looks like the top has a red highlight along the left edge, and blue highlight along the right edge, where as the bottom it's just a clean cut to black. Of course, both look obscenely aliased either way. But bottom looks better than top.
>>
>>61022864
You only can see difference if you zoom in 300%. People saying that changing sigmoid-slope to 10 drastically improves their animu are retarded placebo fags.
>>
>>61022962
I noticed the difference without zooming in. Doesn't matter at all though, the aliasing for both of the As was too much for me to handle, and I had to wash my eyes out in a chemical shower. You fags fast adaptive vector tracing if you want to re-scale your chinktoons properly.
>>
>>61022842
Literally try my code and search log for "apply". I know that its not complicated in theory but it just doesnt work. It applies 540p profile first for me even if i put 4K or 1080p video. Then it applies correct profile but 540p still first in the chain of events.

HOLY SHIT. I found the source of my problem. auto-profiles.lua applies 540p first because it measures mpv's window size and not videos size. mpv opens in small window for me (540p applied) then resizes along with input video (ie 720p). What the fuck lol. I wonder if i can use "container" to get actual videos width and shit for my profiles.
>>
>>61023698
Apparently "container-width" and "width" is the same shit for mpv/auto-profiles. Still applies the profile to the mpv window without videos loaded. Sigh.

It's disturbing which kind of artifacts NNEDI3 shows. I wonder is that with 8x4 or 8x6? I think 8x6 produces more artifacts. I really dislike the NNEDI3 result with this image. The NGU and SSimSuperRes images both look ok to me, but I prefer the NGU result overall because it has less ringing, less noise and overall simply looks more natural.
