I've been an Intel guy since the i7 first came out, but I've been srrsly considering the Ryan 7 1700.

The 10% of games where they don't match, they either beat Intel out by a few percent, or lose by the same margin.

They're also REALLY BAD because an octa core uses as much power as an Intel quad core, while also running basically the same TDP limits.

and what really makes Ryzen shit is how it absolutely demolishes everything within a $600 window of it in multithreaded applications.

Sorta-not-really. Emulators are mostly single threaded, so something like i3-7350k overclocked to 5GHz is ideal for them. But for the most part Ryzen is good enough.

See, I was wondering about something similar. This oldfag doesn't have enough time for gaming (someday... someday...), but, as a dev, I make use of a lot of virtualization (mostly docker or Virtual Box). So, if I can spread the 8 cores of a Ryzen 7 around, and still have plenty of cores available for the OS, compilers, editors, etc, that would be magical.

Also, if I can do so in a way that doesn't severely impact my power bill, all the better. Aaaaaand moreso, if I can do it without dropping $1000 on a fucking processor, that gives me more allowance to spend on GPU (because big monitors, and gaming, someday), more memory, better SSD's, etc etc

Emulating most consoles is usually a single threaded task so the extra cores and threads wouldn't help there but Ryzen's single thread performance is really good anyway and it's probably about comparable to most of the recent Intel chips. The downside with ryzen is you can't overclock as far so the highest end overclocked intel chip would be better in theory. On the other hand ryzen would be great at emulating the PS3, 360, WiiU, PS4, and Xbone and anything newer with a lot of cores
