It's a 486. The fact it even had a fan surprised me.
The cables aren't even organized, they're just been put back in until I can work on it again.

My old job (large public university) kept ALL their old records on ONE non-networked computer running Windows 95. If you were malicious and had physical access (I did, and any student employee in my entire office also did) you'd have enrollment records, financial records, grade records, and a whole other bunch of shit from 1990 up until 2006. One of my proudest moments was getting all that shit properly secured and taken care of.

The keypad and display have proprietary connectors and controllers. You can't simply connect them and use them as if they were standard computer peripherals. That would be the hard part.

Also not sure that a Pi Zero plus GSM modem would fit inside of a StarTAC case, although I'd consider a MicroTAC instead for a bit more room.

Well, this literary depends on the controller.
His board probably does not even natively support CD drives without software drivers. You ain't gonna get shit of indication when it's going. It's literary invisible.

This probably makes even more sense and that's what's going on there, it's just doing the floppy seek and not even trying the CD-ROM as a boot drive, the CD-ROM is just doing it's own thing after just receiving power, almost all of mine flash themselves without even being connected to the board. That's pretty reasonable for both light being on at the same time.

Anyways, I highly doubt he put the freaking cable the wrong way, being someone who has lurked these threads for ages and the "floppy connected upside down" is literary in every thread as faggots do that who don't have a clue.

there is no _right way_ the older drives have the power connector opposite to new floppy drives and might also require flipping the whole cable once to chain them like that on top of each other, it's much better just to have the drive in the way that it just adds up nicely with the cables
it's not like it's a one sided drive that has it's head on the floppy by just gravity that it won't work both ways

sure but not as much desu
what we do with computers and what data we manipulate on them hasn't changed that much at all while hardware ran circles around it, hardware of 2017 is far less limited in what it can accomplish than hardware of 1997 was and it also advances much more slowly, a mid-end system from 2007 can still do pretty much everything you typically do with a computer while a $10,000+ configuration of the XU from that ad with dual processors and 32-64 MB of RAM and a couple gigabytes of disk storage would probably struggle to boot win2k, let alone do anything with it

hell it probably would have been blown the fuck out in every metric, benchmark-wise and practical usage-wise, by basic Pentium Pro systems only two years later at half or even a quarter of the price

You sound like one of those tryhards who buys a couple entry-level Unix workstations or a mid-range shitbox Mac or Amiga and won't shut the fuck up about them while shitting on anything you consider too mainstream, we were all there once, but we eventually grew out of it when we realized that the ISA or really any "special" hardware under the hood doesn't matter for shit when you're using it to run the same exact boring shitware the Pi you threw in your drawer a year ago runs ten times faster. It's about the entire experience, both software and hardware.

And yeah, to that degree, any old Wintel shitbox certainly is going to be "special" because it offers an experience most of us posting in these threads would agree you can't get out of your main system, virtual machines or emulators. It's what draws us to this shit in the first place.

Someone have a picture of that cherry red and black Japanese gaming computer from the 80s? I can't remember anything about it besides the above, sadly.
>>
>>60982197
Nope.
Wintel shitboxes ain't anything special, especially because even the Wintel machines we have today are literary the same shit with a shitloads of legacy compatibility layers.

>And yeah, to that degree, any old Wintel shitbox certainly is going to be "special" because it offers an experience most of us posting in these threads would agree you can't get out of your main system, virtual machines or emulators. It's what draws us to this shit in the first place.

Didn't you own one decades ago already? Oh, you're not even that old, are you?

it had an 20gb drive so space should not be an issue. just wanted to try this so i know how much ram it really needs to run. seems that 16mb is enough and even less if you make a custom iso with less bloated programs.

no
windows 2000 is NT 5.0, an updated NT 4.0, and came out in 1999
windows ME is windows 4.9, not NT-based, and is an updated windows 98 SE, with the windows 2000 colour scheme and icons. it came out in 2000
>>
>>60988918
I'm too basic to understand your response. All I know is that I had either ME or 2000 after 98 (the awful one, why the fuck did they divide 98 into two parts?)

it would have been ME, 2000 wasn't a consumer-oriented release (they were planning one though, see codename neptune)

>>
>>60989086
if you meant was microsoft talking about it at all, probably to some degree
but not anything like real public advertising, perhaps you didn't mean that

i'm probably about as familiar with it as you are
i think i only really started paying attention to windows betas around 2003 or so, as news about codename longhorn was quite publicised, so i probably found out about previous windows betas around that time
>>
>>60989143
I remember reading about longhorn as well. So maybe thats how I heard about it too. I miss not being old :( the internet today isnt about information, its a social media shitfest.
