The King Quartz is in better cosmetic shape and is just a nicer looking watch. I bought it first and should've just stayed with it, I got the Grand Quartz next because I wanted a twin quartz and muh GRAND SEIKO but I got kind of fucked over with that watch. It's started sometimes getting stuck at date changes, so until I get it fixed I can't really sell it and I don't really want to wear it. And if I'm going to pay to service either then I think I would rather do the KQ first so I can get a nice new crystal on it and make sure it's in good condition to last me a long while.

Can anybody throw some of the most functional/useful watch suggestions my way?

I don't have access to time-telling devices (barring my phone, but in some instances I can't charge it and it's important I have it, so a watch would be really helpful)

I do a lot of physical stuff. Hiking, Running, Biking, Swimming, etc. So durability is key, as well. The more complications the better, I suppose. But I'm fine with just a time-telling watch only.

I also don't give a shit how gaudy something looks. Don't mind spending a bit on one as well.

Thanks

i bought this 1968 omega deville chronograph off my brother because he was going to sell it to fund a eurotrip. we had it evaluated for insurance 25 years ago at 3k aud dollarydoos so that's what i offered and he accepted. did i get an okay deal /wt/? my dead uncle bought it brand new in singapore so i've got all the booklets and receipts and everything.
>>
>>60956367
Is it gold. Or is that the only image you could find?
>>
>>60956384
yeah it's gold. exactly like that one but with the original gold wristband instead of the leather one.
>>
>>60956367
There's one like that deville up on chrono24 for $4250. Granted it's in pretty minty condition but it doesn't have the box & papers.
>>
>>60956417
$2300-$2500 depending on condition "used" would have been good.
If it's near mint then $2600-$2800.
$3k isn't too bad a price though. anywhere retail would have fucked you hard for it.

I wonder if you can get a mechanical watch repaired/serviced anywhere in Sub-Saharan Africa. Apart from the RSA of course.

Also were there any South African or Rhodesian watch companies?

Well cracka-led South Africa produced at least six nuclear warheads so were a technologically advanced enough country to produce wristwatches.

>>
>>60957919

>>
>>60958198
I don't south Africa well, but the little I do know says they they've largely been an agricultural and seafaring society. So my guess is that there may have been people around skilled in clock or watch repair, but I wouldn't be surprised if not much actually got made there, and they spent most of their time servicing watches, clocks, that were originally made in Europe, and also marine chronometers on ships.

You can find them brand new for $2000-2500 in some places.

I don't know why it's not more sought out after by watch people. Even if they dislike the design, the movement is Rolex tier.

Fly-by-wire generally means two things (usually the first, often the second)
First, hands are controlled by independent stepper motors (for example, one motor for the hour hand and one for the minute hand).
Second, the crown is not mechanically linked to the hands - for example, in this >>60959589
8m25, the crown controls the mode (time, alarm, chrono, etc), and the buttons are used to set the time, set the alarm, etc.

Rolex datejusts have lume, and those have been used as dressier watches by bajillions for ages.
Same with day-dates.

Roman and arabic numeral dials don't have lume, but the baton/stick dials do do that lume they do. It's fine. A dressy sporty watch that can double as dress or casual. It's not like it's ever been a rare sight with a suit or otherwise.

I don't know if they were an africa based watch company, or if they simple made the issued watches for the Rhodesia army, but do some reading on Roamer.

Only one I can think of. Most of the african nations part of the british empire imported watches from England, just like Australia and NZ did.

"german" flieger like Archimede, Stowa, Laco. Some apartheid country military issue watch might also give that vibe even if it's completely different. Not really sure if the watch would show it much while your actions and personality could do it very clearly, for free.

The Ranger has a modified ETA inside while the North Flag uses the very formidable MT5621, which is effectively a Rolex family movement. It even surpasses some of them, I would say.

That's one major delineation. The other is the power reserve. The Ranger is 38 hours I think, while the North Flag can do 70.

The North Flag uses an integrated bracelet. So you're stuck with steel or leather.

The Ranger can blend in a little bit better. The North Flag is a little bold.

While they are both expedition watches, the North Flag takes the role a little more seriously. It feel more solid than the Ranger.

You should choose whichever you like most. Both are excellent watches. The Ranger too is underrated.

>>
>>60968065
Depends what you're looking for. People have new and old watches. Vintage doesn't have to mean budget or cheap.
They also offer a way different look than modern watches. Plus some could have a different history than their modern counterparts.

Also note that, depending on the brand or even watch, part could be expensive, or it could be difficult to find a watchmaker with experience.

Personally I love vintage watches and very much think they are worth it.

Does the watch run? Is there any rust inside the case.

Looks like in good condition that watch would be worth about 600-900dollars.

If you hunt around you can probably find a case for 100 bucks.

However that watch is rusted to shit, I would not pay more than 200dollars for it as a project.

don't get ripped off bro

>>60971983
>Here is the movement, 400$ for it,

If you get a new case for it it will be a franken watch and maybe worth 600, IF everything goes well and the movement is 100%. So you are going to have $400 in it then $100 plus shipping plus probably a crystal and some gaskets and your labor and you will have to get a bracelet for it. So if everything goes perfectly you will have like $600 dollars in it and it will be worth $600 dollars.

if one thing goes wrong you will be out hundreds of dollars and behind the curve

When was it last serviced? The health of the movement in such an eaten through case is highly suspect

You should think of Seiko like Toyota. They are well made efficient and work well. They have traditional styling and are sold at a reasonable price for what you get. Some Seiko's are very technologically innovative like Toyota's hydrogen car and many Seiko's are very interesting in their own right. But they are not passion pieces they are not the most interesting watches in their segment. When you buy a seiko you are not getting a porsche or a ferrari or a lada or a mitsubishi. The Seiko is the reasonable choice, it looks normal and works well for the amount you pay. If you want a functioning normal mechanical watch that is relatively accurate in that price range you should get a Seiko five. I personally never did because they just don't interest me. They simply are not special in my opinion. Buy what you are drawn to. Buy something that will fuel your passion. If you like the Seiko 5 buy it!

How hard is it to build a watch from a working movement?
Are there any good resources to learn about this, knowing that I'll need to
>make the dial myself, or at least make a render of it and get it made at a shop
>find a case and a crystal
>put everything together
I'm asking because that 5S21 is a fucking ghost but there is a brand new working movement for sale on eBay, so if I can manage to rebuild the watch from scrap and have it look just like the real deal, it's good enough for me.
Is it just a retarded idea or should I go for it?

best bet would be a copper disc with brazed feet. you would then enamel it.. wet enamel through a simple dial design stencil. then clear enamel. if you can get a flat even enameled disc through 3 firing you should be alright but it will probably take a week to make the dial. The case is the problem.

honestly, im disappointed by the snk809 and its movement.

I was impressed initially but if you disregard the fact that its an automatic watch, its quite poor.

NEED a good quality watch with a decent movement. Mine runes out of wind reserve quickly, loses a noticeable amount of time and the second hand moves backwards when im turning the time backwards to readjust it.

The hardlex glass scratches and its not particularly attractive to look at. Im not even sure whether the automatic movement should be given so much merit. There are plenty of cheap automatic movements available and the 7s doesn't do anything spectacular.

>Aren't there shops/companies that could make a proper dial from a high-res render, though? Because doing that in Illustrator would be easy.
Dials are not printed out on paper, they would not last a day.

>Dials are not printed out on paper, they would not last a day.
Yes I know that's why I was wondering if there are companies that would make them professionally.

Yeah no i mean even finding a nice case is a challenge. Ickler makes some decent stuff for some of the eta movements but its not really that nice. Ofrei has some cases and you can find some German ebay cases but i have yet to find a case that inspires me to build a watch. I have personally assembled many watches but the cases are always the let down.
>>
>>60973754
I meant custom made dials, smartass.
>>
>>60973434
>read up what movements the 5S21 is related to
>find a watch that has the related movement
>swap it out with the 5S21
Easiest thing I can think of, though I'm unfamiliar with the 5S family in general.
>>
>>60973481
Any printing company worth their shit can make a really high dpi print of a render. After that, you would want to coat the dial in some clear enamel paint or something. It won't be professional quality, but I have seen it turn out quite well.
>>
>>60973801
You could message some Kickstarter asking where they got it done I guess

Btw if you decide to do this (which I don't think you should) I am willing to give you some high resolution shots of my dial
>>
One just sold on ebay for $50

you are going to be far better off just spending time and finding one than trying to build one, you will have many hours and hundreds of dollars in it and it still won't look as good as a real one

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Men-039-s-SEIKO-Sweep-Second-Pulse-Meter-Quartz-Watch-with-Brown-Band-5S21-8A19-/201942941766?hash=item2f04bcc046%3Ag%3A3QYAAOSwtGlZLy0T&nma=true&si=ea%252BRm4lyPKDKqRWXySehzVUo65Q%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
>>
>>60973914

Not that anon but I think the issue is how to get the same exact case and dial reference (7a10)
>>
>>60973736
Dial restoration companies can sometimes make new dials. Old Dials cannot.
>>60973871
A vast majority of kikestarter microbrand watches are made by Fullswing, Montrichard or 3 Wells which do everything from protoyping to packaging. Don't expect much help there.

There's this one Oxford professor who likes his IWC Mk XI or whatnot so much he learned how to make a replacement dial and posted the journey online, that would probably help but I don't remember his name right now.
>>
>>60973943
Well I am still going to say hunting one down will be easier than fabricating one.

he should go post what he wants on forums and shit under the wanted to buy sections
>>
>>60973962
Yep I agree
>>
>>60973914
What >>60973943 said. I'm not a huge fan of the 8A19 model, the 7A10 is making me diamonds though.

But yeah I'm looking into it and it seems like a world of hurt to even find parts. Don't wanna sink thousands of euros and 6 months just for that. I guess I'll just cross my fingers and hope I stumble upon it eventually.
>>
>>60973684
It doesnt even match in the original brushing pleb, its a pretty meh bracelet desu, but it does look better than the original

What's a nice diver watch for under $200? As in at least 100m, possibly 200m. Basically for sportive swimming, jumping in water from high places, diving up to 10-ish meters.
Pic somewhat related, just what Google gave me for "diver watch". Good choice? Is there better?

That's a Casio MDV-106, a pretty good choice. Also:
Quartz:

>Casio DW-290

Automatic:
>Orient Ray
>Vostok Amphibia
>>
>>60974352
$30USD for a new set of lumed hands is not a ripoff, it's the reality. Small scale manufacturing and superluminova don't come cheap.

The only new SL-painted hands you can get for less are the Amphibia hands Favinov makes, but only because new Vostok parts are dirt cheap.

Can anyone identify this type of shockspring and whether it's removable or not? I'm leaning toward it being fixed, but it would be nice to know if I could oil it the easy way.

Watch is mine, and I'm hoping to finish assembling it tomorrow.

Me neither, but it likely offers no sideways shock protection so no dropping this baby on its side.

Balance assembly is absolutely perfect though, all this watch needed is a new stem and crown.

Post your lucky buys, /wt/.

I mostly inherited 70's-80's slavshit from my late grandfather but most were in great condition (apart from a dressy Poljot that probably had an accident and was mostly destroyed), and he had good taste too. It's nice when your ancestors aren't savages.

Still trying to find the perfect brush. This is pretty much (the left) the exact same thickness of brushing as my submariner, but a little less shiny. The problem now is the bracelet looks far better than the basic brushing on the watch...

This. The Internet at my workplace fucking stinks because the router is TP-Link with the shitty factory firmware. I've never even seen the monkey who's responsible for them, but I could just go over his head and install OpenWRT on them like on my home TP-Shit and it would never be a problem again.

I already troubleshoot that shit anyway, since userpass is fucking admin/admin, kek.

Most of the money comes from side jobs, everyone in the business knows that. And at least I'm not a pathetic IT virgin office bitch nerd, kiddo. Now go put Facebook on the blacklist you flip-flops at the workplace wagecuck.
>>
>>60977098
Actually a plurality of people on the Rolex forum who have handled both will tell you themselves that Grand Seikos have better finishing than Rolexes do, and of course Credor has built grand complications which Rolex has never done.

>>60977221
I work in the private sector doing cybersecurity work, pal. Information security specialist. Meanwhile, you're a fucking NEET on /g/

>>
>>60977472
Still you seemed pretty buttmad for some reason for me criticizing our godlike (as in he does nothing and no one has ever seen him) sysadmin, who left the TP-Shit exposed with a default userpass.
>>
>>60977595
Then fucking leave it alone. Is it your job to maintain it? No. They know when someone logs in and out so be the stupid fuck who goes in and changes things, Mr. Watchmaker.
>>
>>60977625
No it doesn't, the factory firmware logs nothing. It's a simple residential router. Also apparently it is my fucking job, if I want to get work done that is, say when I want to look up a movements lift angle for regulation, or the conversion table for some obscure-looking battery and the Internet shits itself I have a fucking problem, and the salesgirls have a problem too on their end, when they can't reach the databese on a remote server about fucking gold, sapphire and diamonds and they bitch to me to fix it, since apparently no one can.

>Is it your job to maintain it? No.
You're not that important to the venture anon, you're just there to prevent irritating hindrances with the IT stuff now and then, you're not really producing or selling or anything.
>>
>>60977770
You work at a fucking watch store, dude. You're a retail wagecuck making hourly wage. Let your admin handle it. You clearly don't understand the level of work that I do, now do you?
