I wish there wasn't an audible difference in quality between plain ALSA and Pulse tho. I wish I was just being an placebo audiophile. You can change the resample method and spend all your CPU time on fucking audio resampling but surely there's a better way. Windows doesn't seem to have this problem

So many times I'd try out GNOME and wonder why music sounded kinda crappy, kill pulseaudio, and be happy again

... according to some googling right now pulse can just not resample audio when it doesn't need to. If that's reliable then I'd be a happy camper.

Audio on Linux is one giant malfunctioning hell. PulseAudio sound server is poor solution by RedHat and systemd people that got popular and is in any desktop-oriented distro and DE by default.

Currently significant distros that don't use PulseAudio are Archfags and Gentoo, but on Gentoo it's easy to compile packages with ALSA bindings - older traditional sound server.

Tss... Print Screen works on linux too, you know.
Also:
Shift+Print Screen = select area to screenshot
Alt+Print Screen = screenshot window
Ctrl+Print Screen = copy screenshot to clipboard
There are more bindings copying to clipboard (area and window).

Pulse is NOT a replacement for Alsa. It isn't even there to compete with Alsa. Rather, Pulse is there to solve a problem that shouldn't have existed in the first place.

Essentially, there used to be (and still are) a few different sound engines with varying popularity and developers at the time would have to write and maintain their shit so that it would work regardless of whatever the user had running on their system. This was a huge pain in the ass and given complications with propriatary software and just general stubbornness it was unlikely to ever be resolved. So Pulse was created to work as an abstraction layer that interfaced with these different sound engines so that developers wouldn't have to.

It's written in such a way that software written for OSS or Alsa will still work but users can directly write stuff for Pulse without having to work as hard. Pulse also handles sound mixing and manages different hardware devices as well as different programs and in general works in a more modern way.

I'm not saying that Pulse is perfect or even good. All I'm saying is that it's an ugly solution for a problem that shouldn't exist in the first place. That said, it is certainly a much better solution than other likely scenarios.

By the way, JACK is a little similar to pulse but for professional audio (Pulse is for general use).

>>60940379
This, unfortunately. Though PulseAudio is super easy to install on Arch (just isn't installed by default) and I think most users probably use it nowadays.

>>60940619
That depends on the screenshot program you've got running. Several Desktop Environments/Window Managers either come with one or have one available but there are third party programs as well. The features and functionality between them vary.

The one I have for instance not only lets me configure what those buttons do but then lets me decide what to do with the image (e.g. copy to clipboard, save to file, upload to imgur, etc..).
>>
>>60940344
>I wish there wasn't an audible difference in quality between plain ALSA and Pulse

If you cared about audio quality you would not be using ALSA. It sounds far worse than OSSv4 and much worse than Windows. They should rename ALSA to TINCAN.

Firefox is now significantly more performant than Chrome when surfing porn tumblrs and opening lots of tabs with tumblr porn.
And when I say significantly I mean: Chrome breaks down after 5 opened tabs containing "More you might like" sections, Firefox can open more than you'd ever need without breaking down.
I am impressed.

Firefox was doomed back in 2009. Chrome always has been better.

Edgy anti-establisment people used firefox and thought it was better because of bias.

I'd argue that systemd is a little different since it's really a replacement to System V and not an abstraction layer on top of it.

Really the major complaints about systemd are complaints about how it's doing things which is really the same sort of complaints one has about Sysem V. If System V continues to be popular and developers are forced to deal with compatibility with either then in the future we may see a Pulse-like abstraction layer that allows one to talk to both.

I've heard dbus compared to pulse in some way but I don't remember the exact reasoning right now, but I believe it is a better comparison.

I like systemd but that doesn't mean there aren't things about it I dislike that would like to see changed. Binary logs for instance just seem like a dangerous thing to have.
