Nope. How the mighty have fallen. But really, it begs the question of how great they really were? Better than this, surely. You cannot double production in only 7 years and not suffer the consequences: watchmakers are not trained in a day. You cannot remove any semblance of external and more objective quality control (Geneva seal) and replace it with your own joke of a seal and expect things to be better.
>boo hoo! Cartier and shitters are devaluing muh Geneva seal!
What a joke.

Working on an AS 1914 right now (found no better pic), the dial side is retardedly overcomplicated.

Is this why A. Schild tanked in the end, their movements being too complicated for the post-quartz era? AS did some pretty elaborate production movements, I know even Poljot copied their alarm movement.

The hands are clearly enameled metal. You wouldn't know quality if some one turned it into a hammer and smashed you in the face with it.

It's supposed to be but honestly something looks off about that watch.

The face doesn't look like any original Cosmic I've ever seen. wtf are those hour markers and second hand??

They were very high end watches on release and even given it's age that just looks badly made. For example the outer date numbers don't even align correctly. 31 is supposed to sit directly about the 12 numeral.
>>
>>60928909
Why Vintage? Are the movements much better than the new ones?
>>
But the Universe wasn't created. It was always there.
The idea that there is time, with a beginning and an end, are the things that are creations.
We created limits, in a Universe that has none.

>>
>>60930134
You can get a lot more bang for your buck if you find a good piece. Vintage Seikos can be crazy accurate, as well as having good, dressy styling. Good condition vintage Omegas are also far more stylish than modern ones in my opinion. You also get the Swiss meme there.

In the case of vintage in general, you can get way better value. Also, dress watches should generally be small. I love the cocktail time, but it is pushing the limits.
>>
>>60930134
No, he's implying how /wt/ autists start with a certain budget for a new watch, start looking for a decent watch in those budget limits, realise that they cant get shit and decide for a cheap, yet 'tasteful' vintage seiko or vostok.

I thought something looked weird about it but don't know the original cosmics well at all.

>>60930134
The movements are by and large not "better" than well made modern movements (although they may in many cases be better decorated, especially for pre-60s movements), but the price discount for vintage watches compared to modern watches are very significant. But avoiding fakes, frankens, redials, polishes, and generally trashed watches takes research, diligence, and ultimately risk.
>>
>>60930674
Stop being a faggot. Collecting vintage IS a thing.
Personally I don't get Vostock, but Seiko has great vintages, and when you expand to the best vintage watches, like Hamilton or Bulova you're getting some good shit.

You probably see no value in vintage cars and think Lambo is the best thing ever.
>>
>>60930410
>It was always there
>Universe that has none
[citation needed]
You do realize that's a theory? There isn't definitive proof of that and in fact other theories with a beginning and end.

Sure we may know more now, but in the grand scheme of things out current universal model isn't that far from "God created everything one day and left shit roll from there."

For vintage Seiko models no such guarantee was necessary as donor movements are easily and cheaply available for virtually every movement family produced between the 1960s and the mid 1970s.

That being said, in having three 1970s 52xx LM Specials, one 1975 King Seiko Special 5256 and one 1967 Seikomatic-P 5106 serviced I've needed zero spare parts excepting crystals.

>>60935980
Nonsense. You were told that the Omega 56x and 75x were amazing movements, but to be wary of potential issues with opening the monobloc cases. I constantly talk up the 56x/75x as it was one of the four greatest series produced automatic movements of the pre-quartz era (along with the Seiko 52xx, the ETA 2892-A2 and the Rolex 303x).

Yeah, and if you say anything bad about Seiko or even just dismiss it because you don't like weeb shit they start foaming at the mouth. You also can't talk about any Swiss brands without them rushing into to start screaming how the Grand Seiko is better.

I don't even really hate Seiko but the people here can be insufferable faggots.

I said sub-Rolex, as in all the nominally Swiss brands cheaper than Rolex. Rolex themselves still makes excellent, if overpriced, watches. At any pricepoint below Rolex you are better off avoiding Swiss brands.
>>
>>60936162
You're referring to Tudor as well as the 'nominally Swiss brands cheaper than Rolex'? I disagree about that. But agree with the gist of the rest of your comment.
>>
>>60936199
That's a fair point, I should have exempted in-house Tudor from that comment as well. Really I mean The Swatch Group and all the other Swiss brands slapping ETA movements into "Swiss" cases and using advertising to pawn them off on non-watch people. Hell, Panerai and IWC have the gall to charge more than Rolex/Tudor for such trash.
>>
>>60936112
I agree to an extent. Unless of course the watch offers something charming/unique in addition to just having an ETA.

Mos scale of hardness is your friend.

Also, they are easier to repair. You gouge your steel lug or bezel or whatever, and you are in a bad place. With the crystal, you can repair it much more cheaply, or replace it outright at a considerably lower cost.

Rolex is excessively conservative in their design, so a DateJust or Sub from 50 years ago wouldn't look out of place today.

Well in the promise of being more positive I can spill the beans. Its pretty easy I guess. Firstly you need an 80-100 grain sponge type of sandpaper, its like scotch brite but coarser and often red coloured. Sand it straight down. Then you need to polish it lighlty by hand with a basic polishing agent, its usually white and smells horribly, wear a mask. Now youll have a bracelet that looks good in any light, since usually brushed bracelet looks pretty boring in matt light.

With the exception of the last 10 years when Rolex started making these horrid fucking maxi-cases and maxi-dials (and the ROLEXROLEXROLEX rehauts), their designs are the epitome of timelessness. Sure you can get a general idea for era if you're keen on stylistic cues but there are almost no Rolex watches made from the 1940's to the mid 00's (which is when they went full retard to satisfy the gook market for wall clocks) that wouldn't look great today, tomorrow, or 50 years from now. In the tv series Mad Men they gave Don Draper a Rolex Explorer but they didn't even bother going with a period correct one as the fairly modern 14270 Explorer (i.e. the 36mm 1990's model) that he wore "fits in" well enough in the 1960's setting without looking out of place. That's one of the reasons Rolex watches are so collectible, because you aren't going to look back in 20 years and go "what the fuck was I thinking?".

Vintage Omega watches can be found cheap on ebay but there's a reason for that. Pretty much everything made post 1970 looks really, really dated and everyone is going to tell that it's an old watch pretty much instantly. Speedmaster Professionals are the best choice for timelessness and they hold their value well, and are arguably the only watch that Omega hasn't ruined.

My dad wants to get me a watch as a graduation present, what should I get? I don't really want to make my parents spend more than like $3000 or so because that seems unnecessary but I guess I'm open to suggestions. I wear divers almost every day so I thought about maybe a nicer diver, but I love having a cheap beater SKX so much that I'm not sure how I would feel about wearing a diver worth a bunch of money. I already have a sentimental dress watch, too. So I guess that leaves a sort of a casual watch, maybe a chrono.

I guess the MAN ON THE MOON is a safe choice, but I'm kind of iffy about it and it's more expensive than I remember it being. The blue dial Aqua Terra is pretty nice too, but also over the budget. The Tudor Ranger is another option, I've liked it ever since that guy who used to post here got one. I've always liked Sinn, but I would need to look through their catalog some more to see specifically which one I like. I already have an assload of Seikos but maybe a GS would be neat. Please don't suggest Nomos.

Any suggestions? Honestly I'm so content with my cheap shitters that I don't feel much attraction to any expensive watches.

What kind of movement do these cheap Chink alarm clocks with sweeping seconds use?
Is it some kind of mecha-quarz?
>>
>>60948340
Could just be a quartz running at a higher frequency. Remember the only reason for 1Hz being the norm in quartz watches is because that saves battery.
>>
>>60948357
Well they do use AAA batteries so it could be the case.
>>
>Rolex had a sweep second quartz model

Neat. Too bad they only made 1000 total, and only in gold.

The original quartz movements (including the swiss beta 21) are all sweep second. Lots of Omega f8192 available with that movement.

The original astron wasn't sweep seconds was it?

yeah it is really annoying because I actually like seiko watches but if anyone says anything is better than a seiko at any price 15 people come to tell them they are retarded.
>>
>>60948895
This. Probably because none of those 15 people can afford a real watch and need to justify that.

Is there nowhere in the US to go look at Sinn watches? I'm kind of interested in a 556 or a U1 or something, but I kind of want to see one in person first. Apparently watchbuys.com is the only authorized US seller and I've never even heard of them.

Are there any good soviet era wrist watches that /g/ recommends?

no

Depends on if you want a Swiss clone or not.

I feel ya, bro. These idiots wouldn't know a quality watch if they were right in front of it. Probably couldn't tell the difference between a Patek Philippe and a Richard Mille.
>>

A lot of good watches were made from 1922-1991, unless you mean are there any good soviet watches in which case the answer is obviously no.

Because they're not aesthetically pleasing. Save your money and buy something of actual quality. No one is going to look at your Seiko and be impressed.

Assuming the case is in decent shape you should jump all over that Connie for $400
>>
>>60951499
They're memeing you. Vostok Komandirskies and Amphibians are fine very cheap durable watches. Pobeda and derivatives are good small vintage style watches. Poljot made decent 3133 chronographs that are relatively cheap as well.

East Germany had Ruhla watches but they're fairly poor. Belarus had Luch which you can get the very thin 2209's, but those also come from some other brands too.
>>
>>60951590
They're absolute trash. Even the most expensive Seiko couldn't outmatch an AP or even a Breitling.

>>
>>60952067
Well when you're making six-figures, you're wearing watches to pretty much everything. Meetings, events, traveling, etc. Some wear Apple Watches, some wear cheaper shit, but my bosses and my coworkers wear Day-Dates, Royal Oak's, etc.
