Is it possible that opening pdf file in your browser from online site like ie. google drive can exploit your browser?
Is FF/Chrome secure against such attacks?

Yes

Anything is possible, but FF and Chrome are pretty decent.
Never use Adobe Reader.

yes
very possible.
when a file is opened the program that executes it will be the vulnerable attack surface.
the best practice isnt to try and prevent it but really mitigate it in the event that is does happen (more likely than not)
this is where Jails come in handy.
software based sandboxing(containers/vm/chroot) within physical partitions is the second best option of the two.

Yes, but browsers like firefox and chrome sandbox themselves to prevent these kinds of exploits.
