for those looking for a career on said field, don't.

What if you have no choice?

Should have gotten something practical like a philosophy degree, retard.

This sinyor.

> smallish open office
> designated secret indoor smoking area where all staff including asshole president smoke illegally
> constant smoking (by the time one finishes, another would have arrived) that makes your eyes tear up
> don't smoke
> develop slight (hopefully non-serious) constant cough

Just buy earplugs, dumb frog poster anon.
>>
>>60924437
But you also get paid shit. Do you need a cert to operate it where you are?
>>
>>60923555
Everything sucks.

I work construction in the hot sun all day and not a day goes by I don't day dream about a cubicle in an air conditioned building.
>>
>>60924301
>open office
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Holy fuck yesterday morning was so ridiculously loud I had to stuff in some ear phones and crank up some heavy metal because I literally could not hear myself think or concentrate.

Open plan can work provided you've got shit loads of space, but where I am where there is zero space and everyone is crammed together like a chicken coop which is also a phone/contact center is goddamn torture.
>>
>>60923555

Why haven't you moved into the comms room retard?
>>
>>60924468
Call corporate and report them. They will put a stop to that right quick.
>>
>>60924410
It won't end, because the world is run by shameless narcissists who don't feel self conscious, and cubicles cost money. Get used to it.
>>
>>60924537
No certs required, I'm just doing it as a summer job to get myself through uni. The pay isn't too bad for a student job
>>
>>60924468
I really wonder about people that smoke that much. I have an adderall prescription, love coffee and could have sworn I would love nicotine, but it seriously is shit to me. I never understand the appeal....guess it's a brain chemistry thing
>>
>>60924639
That's not an option. Even ignoring the fact that I'm a fucking coward who doesn't act even when his health is literally being destroyed, they're too well-connected - both at work and with the local gov - for me to escape repercussions.

These guys (without the asshole president) decided to destroy the career of a new hire on a whim, and they fucking succeeded. I was there the whole time so I know how it really went down. One of them called in a favor from his friend. The way that poor guy was treated his last few days was dehumanizing in every sense of the word. Not only from those assholes, but from everyone else who just stood there and didn't help because they didn't want to get on the assholes' bad side. This includes myself. The guilt eats me up every time I think about it.

I don't want attention, anon. I don't think I'll be able to handle it.
>>
>>60924639
>>60924836

Also, we've had surprise inspections before.

They get tipped off before hand. They usually lock off the room (once or twice with my work equipment still inside). Since it's officially a unused storage room. It doesn't get inspected.

I wouldn't even be surprised if the inspector was the one calling them.
>>
>>60924836
Change jobs yo, I know it's not easy but it's generally the only option... you cannot change a company from within.
>>
>>60924899
did you consider videoevidence + anonymous tip?
i mean it´s surely not like you are the only dissatisfied person there
>>
>>60924943
I'm the only one in that room who isn't a part of their group. They'll know it's me.

They also have access to security camera footage.

> Anonymous
Anonymous tips are not anonymous. The complaint along with who made it get sent to the president. One of the perks of the smoke room I suppose.

>>60924941
It's a "dream" job. My parents and family keep telling me again and again how lucky I am to have landed a job like this, especially given my shaky employment history and education level, and they're right. The pay, work loads/hours, and location are absurdly good for a person with my qualifications.

I the jobs that are waiting for me if I left are 1/4 the pay and with none of the other benefits. I'd also have a hard time explaining why I left to my parents. I've put them through so much already and don't want them to disappoint them again.

I do fantasize about quiting though.
>>
>>60923555
>work as electrician creating long ass harnesses
>everyone else in my area is asian
>dear fuck its like a Chinese restaurant
They even take goddamn calls from their relatives from god knows where in the middle of working so all I hear is ching chong back and forth constantly
>>
>>60924836
Get a particulate filter mask. You can filter out the smoke instead of breathing it in.
>>
>>60925165
>I'd also have a hard time explaining why I left to my parents. I've put them through so much already and don't want them to disappoint them again.

You're pathetic. Parents exist to be exploited and then discarded when you don't need them anymore. Tell me, do you live to make yourself happy or to make your parents happy?

You make me sick.

Or the lifting height is very limited.
>>
>>60925196
No need. I try to spend as little time in that room as humanly possible, and schedule my work to coincide with the time the room is being used the most. Some of the assholes seem offended when I walk out, but I'll just end up in coughing loop if I don't. Luckily, the ones I'm stuck with don't seem to care.

>>60925201
I've already ruined everything in my life. I'm stuck in dead-end job. I have no social life and no friends. I haven't been in contact with most of my family including my siblings for years. I have lost interest in all my hobbies. In fact I've lost interest in everything. I can't even manage to finish watching a movie or even a youtube video. Everything is bland. Even porn isn't interesting anymore.

So to answer your question, my parents and, to a lesser extent, my job are the main reasons I'm still alive. I get to loose myself in my work, and I can keep my parents happy. I just have to keep this up until they die.

I'm sorry if that makes you sick.
>>
>>60925219
Nope
>>60925262
I'm Canadian. I'm sure there's some sort of law that says you have to be trained to use one, but you don't need any sort of government issued licence. You don't even need a drivers licence.

One bad personal experience does not make the entire sector bad.

There are other, better jobs out there for you, anon. Stay as long as you can, get as much experience as you can, and if the job does not change for the better, you can leave when you have the opportunity.
>>
>>60925404

I'm sorry to hear things are like that for you anon. It sounds like to me that you need to talk to your parents how you feel - You don't want that, your parents don't want that, I don't want that. You don't have to suffer. You don't have to be trapped.

I know it sounds kind of douchy, but maybe you might want to try traveling for a bit. Go somewhere totally different from your world! I have a cousin who might have been in a similar position. He saved his money, left his job and traveled for several months across south east asian alone - he met all sorts of people and made great friends.

>>

Depending on your situation, in my case, the manager seemed to like to constantly monitor everybody. In fact, the whole team can monitor you.

I may start an open office workspace general thread. Who's with me?

I used to work IT in a medium sized JIT factory. It was constant screaming at me to go run to places and fix stupid shit (like operators unplugging printers and computers). Everyone was always getting heated at one another and at me.

The only real IT disaster we ever had was when the 8 year old switches on the plant floor died, which took me all night to get back running since you had to use a fucking bucket lift to get to them.

That job was fucking terrible because of everyone being screaming lunatics. I would get called outside of work all the time and screamed at because someone unplugged something or hit a computer with a torque tool.

This.

Set up in comm closet or server room, or just get some noise cancelling headphones.
>>
>>60930585
Shit's stressful, and not only when you slack off, but also when you do your work.
Seriously, fuck open offices. We are already cramped at mine, so I got a desk next to a wall. The only thing I see a white wall behind my screens, a wall to my side. Basically you are not aware of your surroundings, and everyone can look at your screen. Not to mention, that all the noise in the office is distracting. We have only technical people, so no one is constantly talking, but you can hear everyone tapping at their keyboards, some have open headphones, so you clearly hear what music they listen to. I use IEMs, and it already happened to me few times, that I have been focused on something, and didn't notice when someone literally came up to my desk. At least twice it have been my manager.
>>
>>60930730
I mean that's great and all, but performing surgery on animals and operating an MRI machine doesn't exactly sound like my cup of tea.

I think most people here are doing customer-support level IT, and that's why they hate it. I would an hero too if I had to deal with incompetent users blaming me for failures on their part.

As some other anons this is something you should be fighting. Definitely get video evidence of it happening regardless, You'll need it in case of unfair dismissall.

Then ask for a quick meeting with your boss. Just bring up the issue with him, you don't really need to go into excuses or whatnot, just say you don't like working in that enviroment with people smoking around you. Have your own solution though, ask if you can move to a different room or a proper designated smoking area for the fuckers.

Again get evidence of the meeting. If your boss ignores you or tells you to fuck off send it up the chain and make is official. Sure they can make your life shitty at the job, but keep gathering evidence to show them miss treating you and take it to tribunal or something.

You are literally being abused and taken advantage of and it's not something you have to put up with unfairly in today's society.

The thing that hurts hearing is loudness, not distance of the speaker to your ear. Benefit of IEMs is that they isolate outside noise better, so you don't have to turn up loudness, to hear your music.
Learn what you are talking about, and don't spout things you don't understand.

Honestly, speaking as a southeast asian where family is prime, it's a really unhealthy mindset to just submit to them. I know people are just saying don't be exploitative, but like >>60932039 said
Their vision for my life is so utterly base that if I were to follow it, I wouldn't call it "living" in any sense of the word.

I swear to God that employers have to have some sort of racket going on where they've all agreed to refuse to hire anyone without intern experience, thus forcing students to intern and give away work for free.
I had listed on my resume that I had actual work experience as a manager at a water park I worked at through college. After 6 months of job searching, nothing. I decided to change the job title from "Manager" to "Management Trainee Internship" and within a month I had two job offers. Complete bullshit.

There are certain buzzwords that HR just does ctrl+F for on their database to pull up a list of qualifying resumes. If yours doesn't have that word, then pic related. Intern is one of them, CAD another.
In fact I've heard of some people using the margins of their document to write in a whole bunch of buzzwords in white text so it's unseen by the reader, but more likely to be picked up by their internal search function.

Working from home is for fucking autists. You never speak to anyone, you never learn anything new, and in the end you just spend all day on Facebook bragging that you are the most intelligent person you've spoken to all month, when you're actually a stunted imbecile by the standards of actual human society.

Open-plan offices are annoying too, but they're unavoidable when walls cost money.
>>
>>60930242
The hours get pretty unsociable, but you're right. Today, I worked from 0830 to 1700, then I was on call until 2300, which effectively meant I was continuing to work, just from home. That's 14 1/2 hours of work I've done today. It was mostly just walking over to windows and looking out at passing cars, but it gets to you after a while.
>>
>>60932464
Get certifications to prove you're competent. Basic certifications often aim to be analogous to a year or two of experience, so if you can get a CompTIA A+, you can get a shitty IT job replacing hard drives, and work your way up to a comfy job from there. That's what I did.

Sounds like you work in a data centre like I do. People phone up and ask you every tiny detail about the company ("What prices do you offer for bulk cPanel licensing?") which you can never answer, but otherwise, it's fantastic. It's just eight hours of chatting shit with fellow autists and occasionally plugging in an Ethernet cable or repointing some DNS records.
>>
>>60934130
To add onto this, I'd go ahead and get both your A+ and your CCENT (Cisco ICND1 test), which basically shows that you're not retarded and have a decent understanding as to how computers work and a basic understanding of networking.

Net+ and Sec+ are expensive for what they are, since they aren't regarded as well as the MS/RH/Cisco certs, but cost just as much.

My brother's doing this. Landed a consulting job right out of college,$80k starting. If he had stayed another year, he'd easily be earning six digits. He hated it, quit after a year, went on a bike trip, through yurop, and is now picking grapes and truffles during the day and cooking at an upscale bed and breakfast at night. I don't know how happy he is, one of those "no matter where you go, you can't escape yourself" things, but it seems way more interesting than the desk job he had before.
>>
>>60934616
>"no matter where you go, you can't escape yourself"

That's what I'm dealing with.
I was a mess my senior year of HS, barely graduated, didn't have college plans, was working for $10/hr as an "IT assistant". I was depressed and somewhat lonely, even though I had people around me. I was focused on stupid shit like booze, women, and cars, and I knew that if I took out the loans to go to college, it would be a colossal waste.

So I joined the military, and I've since lived in 3 different places, and done some growing up, met a ton of people and made new friends. Now, with a healthy bank account and body, I still feel that depression.
I feel like I'm never satisfied. I went home for a week, and it really hit me. I don't really relate with the guys who went to college, and a lot of the people I thought were going places have gone nowhere, still working minimum wage jobs and/or dropped out of school. So that "home" I had built up in my head was just a fantasy, and really, it's not too much better or worse than anywhere else.

Sorry for the whole rant, that line stuck out to me.

that is too true. people who tend to get depressed or unsatisfied would still manage to invent a way to be depressed or unsatisfied even if they obtain the stuff they thought it would give them satisfaction.
