Ryzen Satisfaction?

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

For those who are now running a Ryzen system, what was your previous CPU/build, and how would you rate your satisfaction with the purchase?

Just wondering how actual owners are feeling about it if you ignore all the shitposting / benchmark wars.
>>
its coming in the mail but I got a i3 2120. Bought the 1600.

Oh and this will be the firs time using an SSD.
>>

I've had a 1700x for a couple months, i had to wait a month or so till my motherboard showed up due to shortages. It took a couple bios updates to make 2933mhz stable with my memory .

it's been cool being part of a fresh platform and seeing bios updates actually do things .

ryzen is really fucking fast.

9/10 satisfied with the cpu, 2/10 with the motherboard.

I can't actually tell the difference most times, I only notice it when transcoding and compressing media.

gigabyte gaming k5 x370

Has a clock generator but not basic OC features like LLC, ends up getting worse OC's than my asus b350 board. No mem training either so memory is a pain to OC

Also there's a distinct lack of bios updates, the normal gaming 5 series has had 6-7 updates and this board just got it's 3rd recently. Previous to that there was only pre-release bios and week 1 bios.
>>
>>60922170
got a 1700 when it came out, upgraded from a 5 year old FX 8350
the difference was enormous, especially after moving my system over to an NVMe drive a few days later
might be a bad example though, that's a pretty massive switch and I don't have anything running a modern intel desktop CPU

>>
I had a mid level i5 before getting my 1700. It is unreal how much the 1700 blows the i5 out of the water. Today I was 1TB of files that would have brought my i5 to a crawl. My 1700 didn't even slow down. I played Dota while streaming when I was copying the files and barely used 50% of my CPU. I'm blown away at the dichotomy in terms of performance between my old setup and new one.
>>

memory doesn't get as fast as i want it, but stable as fuck...great streaming performance, idk. felt like i got good value considering nowadays i dont do play top tier games but mostly csgo.

having that headroom is nice though, for opening premiere, photoshop and after effects all at the same time and switch back and forth

4.7ghz 8320 -> 3.8ghz 1700. Currently 9/10 satisified - would be 10/10 but i'm a perpetual overclocker and i'm trying to dial in the stable OC. I did have it running for ages at 3.9 but recently it has become unstable so backedi t down to 3.8ghz.

In my foolishness I did buy some 3200mhz ram not on the QVL so currently running at 2666mhz and hoping I can manually tune 3200mhz.

There are a few games that I can't run anymore because framerates but that's because the engines aren't optimized for all the cores

previous cpu: 6/10
>good game performance
>can't overclock
>bad video editing performance
>slow rendering
>can't record in x264 @ 1080p because it would drop frames or cause massive game slowdowns
at the time of purchase the i5 4670 was great, and games ran much smoother, but in 2017 it started showing its' age, especially when editing/recording videos

new cpu: 10/10
>better game performance than the i5
>can overclock (3.9ghz)
>great video editing performance
>no freezes/stutters, instant seek/playback while editing
>fast x264 rendering
>can record in x264 @ 1440p with no problems, can even record @ 4k with the superfast preset, but it drops frames when there is a lot of pixel movement

so I can test what was best for my use.
So far the 7700k got me +20-30 fps on all my games, smooth 1440 video playback and multitasking

1600x had less fps, some shuttering with 1440 video playback, multitasking was smooth, 7zip was better.Got a lot of issues with the motherboard, I couldn't overclock my ram.

Motherboards are a disappointment, my ancient AM2 Crosshair had a pretty good sound (especially awesome directional desktop mic), esata with full support for hot-swap and port multipliers (DAS), and integrated lan cable tester with length / fault proximity detection.
Had to get a standalone tester because I actually used that feature often enough, usb mic and SIL sata card, for the total of >$100

Got the 1800x

Feels fucking AMAZING not having any impact, at all while using OBS. Works wonders with video editing, too. I've noticed I can have quite a few more tracks in my playback pane, before it slows down or stutters. (Using a Powerdirector license that my friend owns.)

in games, themselves, I got minor drops in certain games I tried, like Skyrim, and Skullgirls, oddly, but everywhere else, my FPS is basically the same. Honestly not memeing, but I have noticed that it actually is ridiculously smooth, like the shills have been claiming. It feels really nice, even if my max FPS have come down by a few in some games. The AMD benchmark mothership, DOOM, plays fucking incredibly, holy shit. I don't think I've ever played a game that ran this well. Shills or not, fucking ID software deserves a medal.

Ryzen can reach 7GHz on air tho

>>60928391
Voltage is too high. Most ryzen chips can hit 3.6 close to stock voltage. At 1.325 you should be aiming for 3.7-8ghz.

Upgraded from a FX8350 to a Ryzen 1700
Main reason for upgrading was not wanting to deal with the piece of shit MSI 970 gaming firehazard board anymore

Got myself a X370 gaming 5, it had some BIOS issues at first, but now its 100% stable

Performance is great, runs everything I throw at it without breaking a sweat
Using the stock cooler (surprisingly quiet) and it gets up to about 62C under full load in summer after some undervolting and overclocking to 3.2Ghz
I can easily hit 3.6Ghz at about 1.1V, but I really don't need the performance, so I run at 3.2Ghz and 0.984V
Overall 10/10 so far

What the fuck, that sounds like a really good chip. You should invest in an aftermarket cooler somewhere down the line and push it a little higher. You could probably hit 4.0 EZ with something like a Dark Rock.
>>
>>60929379
Nope, costs just $999
If we scale down to the eight-core 7820X, that's just $589
How much is the Ryzen 7 1800X again?
$499?

from what i've read you can get a stable 3.9ghz overclock at 1.362 (on my motherboard). The difference i n voltage between 3.9 and 4.0 seems to be 1.362 for 3.9 and 1.48 for 4.0 stable. I had mine running at 3.9 @ 1.362 for a bit but decided it was better to just use the asus optimized preset on my motherboard which automatically overclocked to 3.85ghz

i have much better temps this way because it uses much more variable voltage. i probably wont attempt a 4.0 overclock again until i start feeling any performance shortage from my 1800x. These voltages seems to apply for both the 1700x and 1800x.

my only gripe with ryzen so far is memory compatibility. I have a 3200 corsair vengenace hynix chip but only able to get it to boot at 2933mhz.

the thing about ryzen is, it will boot at 4.0/4.1 ghz no problem with low voltages. once you running something that utilizes the multithreading across all cores the system will crash. you may think your 4.0ghz overclock is stable using prime95 etc and gaming will also be fine. Run something like cinebench and halfway through the system will shut down. Turning off SMT will improve your stability and improve temps but also significanly reduce benchmark performance so that's up to you. my cinebench score went from ~1650 to ~1200 by turning SMT off. but the cpu ran about 10 degrees cooler as well. Supposedly some games run better with SMT off since it keeps processes on the same cores. A higher base overclock with SMT off may be the way to go for gamers for the short term. once games utilize multithreading that may change though.

been really happy with my 1800x. a solid 9 / 10. just wish memory was more conformed and stable. i honestly don't care being limited to a max of 3200, it just be nice if i could reach 3200 100%. i've seen people struggle to get 2666mhz AND 2400mhz and those are offically supported. granted far less compared to the hard struggle for 3200. just a handful i've seen but still, supported ones should work without question at least.

It's complete shit. Almost always below 60 fps with 1080 on new games with high settings

I could easily stay above 100 fps with the same card on 6700k
>>
Bought the 1600X for my 2nd PC, previous was running a 1090T that I borrowed from a friend, which was bottlenecking my RX 480 pretty hard.

My only regret is that it didn't come out last year so I could have gone for it instead of the 6700K that I have on my main PC, even though the 6700K is good too.

It was a long wait from Phenom II and FX, but it was worth it.

>once games utilize multithreading that may change though

How many years have we been believing that devs will actually do this though?

Since Core 2 Quad?

Now it's 2017 and 8 core consoles have been a thing yet these new games still only use 2 to 4 cores.
>>
>>60931420
he state of game development wasnt really the point of my post. nothing we can reallyl do about that

just saying the disabling SMT will probably give more stable base overclocks at lower voltages but reduce benchmark scores. this is because the CPU is not actually running at full load with this off.

to me a stable overclock is keeping the CPU from causing a system crash while running at 100% load.

I see plently of people claim that they have a stable 4.0ghz overclock @ 1.36 volts or lower. It is only a matter of time before they run into a system crash. Ryzen performs normal tasks and gaming with this clock and voltage combo because it is not being utilized at 100% load.

i find cinebench to be the best test of a ryzen cpu stability because it makes the chip beg for mercy and fully utillizes multi-threading across all cores. however, for most this is not a real world scenario. It may be "stable" for you but "technically" if it doesnt pass cinebench then it isnt a real stable overclock.
>>
>>60931934

I understood all that.

Got any benchmarks where SMT gives an advantage in gaming by the way? And do you believe SMT is advantageous in emulation?

no clue about emulation but here is jut one of many example of how in "some games" smt off give a slight performance boost

doesnt seem like there is any performance loss in turning it off for games. Not that i've seen anyways. benchmarks that ultilize all cores will have a significant score decrease. but those are just benchmarks so who cares

Different 1700 here, got an nh-d15 sitting around, planned on contacting them to get the free mounting parts for am4, but couldn't be assed because there's really no reason to do so. Why overclock and shorten lifetime if it works so good?
>>
>>60926645
Damn. So not that good yet.
>>
>>60934648
you cant actually play breath of the wild at higher than 30fps from what i understand

supposedly the game timings and such is linked to the fps so it fucks with the game if you go above 30. so putting it at 60 would cause the game to do things twice as fast

i5 2500k to 1600X

I love it, there's the first generation quirks that are annoying like having to wait for a new BIOS update so I can finally run 3200mhz RAM. But even at my current settings I notice a huge improvement over Sandy Bridge and the extra cores, threads, and SMT are helpful in ways I never noticed without them.
>>
I sold my i5 6600k for an R5 1600X. Less gaming performance, the 6600k was insane in single-threaded shit, but I like virtual machines and sending 3 cores to the VM was disappointing. A 6700k/7700K would have been the obvious upgrade, but still, that's only 3 cores 6 threads max. My only options were Broadwell-E or Ryzen, and Ryzen was a lot cheaper. I like the amount of cores, and am generally satisifed. Some of my issues:
>shit at overclocking, can only get 4.0GHz which kinda sucks since XFR can boost to 4.1GHz if I left it at stock. Tried for 4.1 but can't get there stable even at 1.5v.
>Memory speeds are still fucked harder to overclock than Intel. My 6600k+Gigabyte board had no issues with my CL15 2666MHz RAM, but my AM4 Gigabyte board shits itself. Have to run at 1.35v on DRAM and change timings to CL16 to even boot.
>Virtualization issues on QEMU, they fixed IOMMU groupings at least but there are still bugs with the nested paging tables kernel option
>minor complaint, but the default AM4 backplate on my board is absolute shit.
Other than that it's fine.

I'm >>60935006, the K5 was what I got, am extremely dissatisfied with the board as well. Shit BIOS, shit memory support, shit overclocking (offsets only + no LLC)m shit VRMs, shit backplate, lack of updates, etc. Even has less features than my Intel Gigabyte board which was a little cheaper, like no true 7.1 audio. Only has 5.1+optical. Feel jewed, if they can't fix the BIOS completely I'm buying a new mobo when the new Ryzen refresh comes out next year.
>>
>what was your previous CPU/build
stock i5 3570

pretty satisfied.
It does run a lot of games better and the multitasking is pretty good but I feel like applications and games will utilize it better in the future.
Still, for right now I'm happy.

is VM performance adequate? currently have an i5 4690k and wondering if Ryzen is worth
>>
>>60936268
It's ok if you can work around the issues. Expect more bugs than with Intel. The biggest issue people are having right now is with nested paging tables, a KVM-related module, basically when left on Windows performance is fine but 3d games run terribly for some reason, GPU utilization is all over the place. You can turn it off, but Windows runs like shit due to CPU stutters and it's likely QEMU will be locked to sending a single core. Some people have fixed this by disabling SMEP in the config file or emulating a Penryn CPU. Also emulating Penryn is kinda necessary anyway to get hyperthreading, the last I checked libvirt doesn't recognize Ryzen and will emulate an older Opteron instead, which doesn't have hyperthreading. This may or may not cause issues, depending on what you're doing. (It pretends your virtual threads are real cores) Still doesn't fix 100% of the stuttering, although games are pretty much playable. So it's workable, but don't expect Intel performance in VMs yet though.
