The 212 evo is past its prime. There are better options. the gammax 400 destroys it.

NoFan CR-95C (if you have sub 95TDP CPU) is the best.
You just need a fan grill or two on top of the case for proper air circulation (no case fans required).
The complete silence is such a bliss, especially at 3AM.
It's pretty expensive though.

Rip your vrms, just get a 120mm aio and set the fans to 500rpm, it'll cool better than that.

Totally silent desktop, good temps and almost no dust accumulation.

nzxt x62 watercooler seems to do pretty well and runs quiet until it hits full load

hardware canucks had a review that was pretty good for hearing the difference - virtually silent when just the pump is running.

Personally I've opted for an Noctua D15 for am4, but that's mostly because I can't find anything at the same performance for cheaper.

No, all temps are low.
GPU is 1050Ti, a model that was fanless out of the box.
CPU doesn't go over 60C in stress test (FX-6300), board is below 70C (it was almost 100C before, fuck Gigabyte).
GPU is the hottest at 80C in stress test (still 15C from max temp according to nVIDIA).
Doesn't block first PCIE slot on bigger boards, hangs over ram but it's not like you change it everyday.

Might want to say that Noctua will ship you a bracket for the coolers that don't support AM4 out of the box. Also only designated AM4 models come with the bracket by default, at least until they can update their supply lines.

What are the temps like?

One reason that the 212 still gets recommended everywhere is that it is available everywhere for a decent price. Is it the best in its price range? No. The Gammax 400 beats it. Can you buy the Gammax 400 everywhere? No. So the 212 is still recommended, because it provides excellent cooling/price, and it is available in many places where no other alternatives exist.

Water has high heat capacity. What you're basically doing with water cooling is giving yourself more time with a lower temperature before you reach regular air cooling temperatures.

If you're playing a game or something, you'll usually see spikes of heat produced in particularly demanding areas for a few seconds before the CPU clocks back down. AIO's are able to handle these sort of temperature spikes without revving up the fan speed, and the overall temperature of the CPU remains stable.

Whereas with an air cooler, you lack that heat capacity to absorb temporary spikes in temperature like that.

What water cooling would theoretically be best at are extra-high boost clocks that take advantage of the heat capacity to dump a lot of heat in a short amount of time efficiently.

Heat transfer depends on the difference in temperature and surface area. The higher of both the more energy that can be removed.

Water needs more energy to heat up but it only removes heat at a rate dependent on surface area and delta T.

How effective a radiator is is the critical factor.

A large cooler like the NH-D15 has enough mass and enough dissipation that it nearly matches water cooling. No real advantage for water in that case.

With the noctua cooler tell people that if you don't have a m.2/4x pcie slot between the cpu and the cooler it most likely will interfere with the first slot.

Quick, what's the absolute quietest setup to cool a performance (re: overclocked) cpu.
Cooling needs to be good enough to prevent thermal throttling. Otherwise quiet is #1. Space, size, and style can be neglected.
