remember when there used to be 50 different phone related threads a day? thank God this general exists

I have a Samsung S4 and I have no experience with smartphones. I wanted to root it and eventually learn how to flash (stock) firmware on it in case I fuck something up.
All the guides said to check if the bootloader is unlocked, but none of the guides work (calling the *#*#3515 number). Is it even possible to check it for this phone?
Is there a definitive guide on how to install new ROMS/firmware (I don't know the difference) for this or all phones? Everything I find differs from each other and I'm afraid of ruining the only phone I have. I also tried rooting it with Towelroot (which worked on another phone my sibling has), but it didn't work. Is there a recommended general way to root phones or a specific one you recommend for this model?

Should I bother with a S8 plus?

I'm in the good ol U S of A. I'm planning on using Verizon. Alright, on my Galaxy S6 Edge, Android Nougat (7.0). I have my phone set to have the colors screensaver or whatever you call it when it's charging.
In my car, I have it mounted to charge and be up front, and because I can't just leave it on Spotify because it'll go dark, I use multi-screen and GPS wherever, that keeps it active.

Since I got force updated to 7.0, I've had a problem with the multi-window browsing, or whatever it's called. Before, I would press the multi-window/open apps/whatever button, press the multi option, and bring them up. If I hit home, they'd both close just fine and all was dandy, just do it again.

Now, it just "minimizes" the one on top. If I hit the home button and then open anything else it just puts it back on top. If I hit close all apps, it stays open, and I have to use the dragdown to close it or bring it back into focus. This is annoying as fuck, it didn't used to do this, and I can't find a damn option to turn it off.

My HTC desire 820 has been unlocked, custom recovery flashed but when i attempt to enter recovery through bootloader I get a htc logo, a half second flash of "this phone is not running offical htc software" and sent back to bootloader. Can't factory reset it either.

No, in fact almost no custom rom for any sony phone gets the camera software right, even if you flash those zips that supposedly improve the camera you can clearly see it's nowhere near as good as it was on stock, it's like the camera itself downgrades the moment you unlock the phone's bootloader, so far only one guy has managed to get back the camera quality on a custom rom, but only for the xperia Z2.

I have a nexus 5x for little more than a year now. I didnt really like the build quality.

The vibration motor seens to be a little loose / uncalibrated, sometimes it vibrates for a quarter second without really calling my attention, sometimes it vibrates so hard i can hear it shaking on my table from the other side of the house.
Plus if i shake it lightly, i can hear something bumping around.
The glass actually cracked once, 30 minutes after a small (30cm) drop.

Performance wise it is pretty gud.

So I am heading to Japan in a few months and my one plus one is pretty shit for connectivity over there. I have been thinking about replacing it for a while now as the battery has aged significantly and I'm down to two devices, the nexus 5X and the Moto G5 plus.
