I thought I'd be helpful, even though you're probably from reddit.
1. Kali is a distro you don't want as your daily driver, same as blackarch.
2. If you want a "just werkz" Linux, get mint or Ubuntu (I've heard good thing about opensuse, but no experience with it). Debian is also a solid choice if packages don't have to be new.
3. In case 2. doesn't apply, get straight to arch (if you're ok with getting bullied on /g/) for pre-built binaries or to gentoo, for maximum control and comfyness. Prepare to read lots of forum posts and to get into irc in case of gentoo
4. How2install: get some kind of live usb creator in case of windows (that's right, you need an external program) or use "dd if=/path/to/image.iso of=path/to/device" with a Linux environment to create the live medium. I dunno about mac (I'm not a gay hipster idiot)
5. Stick the badboy from 4. into your computer and boot it up. Follow the installation instructions and make sure to get some swap going if your laptop is low on ram (<4gb), it doesn't hurt to get some anyway.
5. Fire up your system and be amazed by the community driven efforts that is Linux!

Yes, you just have to insert the installation medium and follow the instructions firm the wiki. You can choose you boot device from either the bios itself or when booting and pressing f12 in the process (on most machines)
