my experience in academia is that abstract algebraic types are generally regarded as a graduate-level study. AFAIK databases and PL research are the only domains in which abstract algebraic types are common

i agree they should be taught. i think the problem is that no mainstream language supports them as simple first-class citizens. both database and PL researchers author a lot of code to support abstract algebra

I'd expect both abstract algebra and intro to analysis to be prereqs to such a course. But only math majors will really get that far in undergrad

Take a look at how research groups in the real world and business are structured. They are multidisciplinary. When you can just hire a math guy into the team, there's no need to force the software guys to learn higher math past what they need to communicate with the mathematicians.

and yeah, the type of stuff you are linking is well-established (database people have written algorithms this way for decades), and is getting more popular. but it's not yet at the level where it's "mainstream." it's the kind of thing you *might* pick up if you took certain courses, but you would only use it for certain jobs. i think it's starting to become popular in data systems engineering (i.e. writing frameworks for use by data scientists)
