Hey /g/, how are laptop graphics card these days purely on a performance perspective (disregarding price&cost effectiveness)?
I heard from a friend of mine that the mobile version of the GTX 1060 is almost the same as its desktop equivalent, what the hell?
Last I checked (2013 or so) they didn't perform even half as well as desktops. Is nvidia taking the laptop market more seriously than before or something?
They're close, tho a bit behind
In a couple of years they'll be the same
Well they can do VR now. I have a 1060 6GB in my alienware 13 R3 and it is fast. Hot. But fast.
Dat OLED panel.

UserBenchmark puts the 3gb models at +13% performance and 6gb models at +23% performance.
They're obviously closer than they've ever been, but the gap has grown very small, almost to the same difference of reference cards vs. higher-end OC'd cards. It's getting close and depending on your your needs/budget ratio, possibly worth getting.

Man this is some shit, 3 or 4 years ago people would laugh mainly at how dumb it would be at spending 1500 dollars or so for half than the desktop equivalent
And now I'm seeing 800 dollar laptops with mobile 1060s, which as far as power goes it's crazy how even I would bite
I mean shit, in a few years I can see most of the focus going on heat/fan noise management because that's still a huge minor for me but just performance alone is impressive how fast it caught up
I wasn't expecting something like this at least until early 2020's

The problem is not raw power, but thermals. Most gaming laptops are loud like lawnmowers and have really hot keyboards.

Well, back then it was not only loud fans and thermals, but raw power
it just wasn't worthy at all
but with power catching up, maybe they can do something about those other issues?
I mean for real man I still don't believe the small gap in performance between desktop/laptop 1060s, and laptop performances were a joke not even 4 years ago

what happened to AMD and mobile GPUs? Did they abandon the market?

No, I think APUs are coming after ThreadRipper. They'll enter the mobile market eventually, and considering their current partnership with Dell for ThreadRipper, I wouldn't be surprised if Dell was the only major OEM with AmD laptops.
