>How to assemble a PC, select components & more. (somewhat outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php/Build_a_PC

CPUs:
>G4560 - budget builds (<$500) unless G4600/G4620/i3-7100 is heavily discounted
>R5 1500x - generally all you need for 60fps with power to spare. No i5
>R5 1600 - best value for higher fps gaming & mixed usage; 1600x if you too lazy to OC
>i7-7700k - bad value but good for higher FPS; may have heat issues
>R7/Xeon/Threadripper/i9 - compute/Multitask/mixed use

Graphics:
>G4560 iGPU is fine for desktop stuff and very light game
>1050Ti for low budget. Drop settings if not Freesync/Gsync on newer games; RX560 if discounted <$90
>RX570 4GB - 1080p@60+hz, running most maxed; older games at 144+hz
>RX580 8GB - 1440p@60+hz, inject SMAA & drop settings
>1060 - Generally outperformed by the RX 580 and GSync costs more; consider if AMD is not an option (ie CUDA/miners buying all RX400/500s)
>1070 - if on sale/can't afford 1080
>1080 - 1080p@100-144+hz maxed; 1440p at lower hz.
>1080Ti - 1440p@90-144+hz; 4k@60hz in SOME games, more at lower settings

General:
>READ PRODUCT REVIEWS to see if that cheap SSD/PSU or whatever is reliable
>Consider larger SSD-only for what you budget SSD+HDD combined. Add HDD later once needed
>NVMe aren't for faster OS boot. They're primarily for productivity/scratch disk/VMs
>Stop confusing any M.2 drive with NVMe. M.2 is a form factor
>mATX board + case is often cheaper
>1 SR DIMM is slower than 2 DIMMs
>>
>Post your component list; rate other anons'; ask questions in general.

I'm looking to buy a cooler for my rx 480. I was interested in the Arctic Xtreme IV but I fear it won't fit in my ENERMAX ECA3351A-BT(U2) which is 390 MM if i remove the SSD bracket out. The card itself is 288 mm and I know the heatsink on the rx 480 is in the middle of the card. Would this cooler fit in my case, and if not, what cooler would you anons recommend?
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3ssad0qZuU
>>
>>60899547
You can always slap an Accelero Twin Turbo 3 in there which is smaller than the Xtreme VI (one less fan & smaller heatsink) but still cools very well, but RX 480 don't really OC well so why do you wanna get a new GPU cooler in the first place?
>>
>>60899689
Because my temperatures are way too high. On Overwatch I get about 87 C maxed out and I figured getting a cooler would lower the temperatures.

I'm also really big into 3D modeling software and do a lot of programs that revolve around that and drafting
>>
>>60899740
>On Overwatch I get about 87 C maxed out
Wow, something is really wrong I never get that temps even in games like witcher 3 with r9 380.
>>
>>60899771
my card is a reference model that may be why. I don't really want to buy a new GPU since I have a good one right now and i'm trying to save up money for more necessary things

Should I keep the ryzen or swap it for the i5-7600K
>>
>>60900597
honest answer 7600k will be slightly better for games as long as you won't do much stuff in background. 1600 will be better for pretty much everything else and is cheaper.

Interesting, ill keep that in mind.

I want to get either a 1080 or 1080ti.

I'm building mostly for gaming. Some 3D rendering and art. Possibly music production.

Should I go R5, R7, or the i7 7700k?
>>
>>60900597
>should i go for a 4 cores 4 threads CPU
I personally wouldn't because i'm not the kind to enjoy sudden FPS drop and high CPU usage during gaming, but heh you do what you want

>>60900722
I'd say R5 1600 should be plenty enough for the productivity stuff you do and do great in gaming. 1700 should only be considered if you tend to run multiple of these productivity software at once (multitasking)
>>
>>60900731
So the ryzen would be better for a cheaper build (what i'm shooting for)?

Then any old cooler rated for 150w or so will do. Generally speaking when it comes to air coolers they are all the same shit (for a given size) until you go BIG air in which case...its all the same shit but will cool 300w monsters.

My brother wants a PC for playing vidya at 1080p. He absolutely wants an Intel CPU, so no Ryzen, and I don't think he'll change his mind on this. What is a decent motherboard to go with the above, preferably at a reasonable price? Some of the budget options I could find are Gigabyte GA-H270-HD3, MSI H270 PC-MATE and ASRock H270 Pro4, any good?

Also, anything else that can be improved?

It stays at around 53ºC with 0% Fan speed, so it's completely silent on idle, case fans on minimum speed (Corsair Carbide Spec Alpha comes with 3 fans and 3 speed modes, first 2 modes are silent, airflow is good) and it stays at those temps no problem, fan never goes up from 46% and 74ºC on 100% GPU usage, in my opinion it starts getting loud at 50% or more so it's pretty good.
>>
>>60901010
Pentium G4560 is actually the only good Intel processor right now for the money, i3 performance for really low price, decent for 1080p60fps with a mid tier graphics card.
7700k is good for high FPS gaming (120/144Hz monitor required or it would be a waste), but still a Ryzen 5 1600/Ryzen 7 1700 is better for everything else that isn't gaming, also it won't make a difference if you have a mid tier or lower graphics card.

MY PARTS ARE ARRIVING TOMORROW IM SO EXCITED
>>
Hi /g/

I'm planning on building a new pc myself.
To save some money I decided I'd reuse some parts from my old prebuilt pc (alienware x51)
I'm quite new to this so please give me recs.

Parts I'm going to keep:
Power supply: 240W (or get a new 600W one)
CPU: i5 2320 (if I'd get a new one it would be ryzen 1500x)
Memory: 2x8GB
HDD: 1TB

New parts:
GPU: 1050 Ti
SSD: samsung 850 evo 250GB
CPU cooler: be quiet pure rock
Motherboard: ASRock AB350M Pro4
Case: looking for a soft pink one, like enermax ostrog, but can't find ones that ship to the Netherlands

Not sure if I'm missing something.
It's my first time building myself, I've only once before helped someone
I'd appreciate your help with the old & new parts and maybe you can give me recs or alternatives c:
>>
>>60901618
Sounds solid, definitely go for the 600W PSU since 240W is ridiculously low.

The motherboard you listed is socketed for a AM4 CPU, not your current i5, so only switch that up if you're going for the 1500x (in which case you can ditch the aftermarket cooler since ryzens are very good)
>>
>>60901618
>>60901698
Something I forgot to list is if you're going for the B350 motherboard you'll have to change up your RAM, I suppose you have DDR3 now, the B350 motherboard is only DDR4 compatible. Once again, only go for the new motherboard if you,re going for the ryzen, in which case you would benefit from investing a bit more into higher speed DDR4 (like 3000 or 3200 mhz) since ryzens really benefit from them. Just make sure your motherboard can handle the DRAM overclock.
>>
>>60901618
>keep i5 2320
>new motherboard
>if I'd get a new one it would be ryzen 1500x
you're forced to get a new one if you get a new mobo
>>
>>60901618
If RAM is DDR3 I would say the only thing worth keeping is the 1 TB HDD, so you are basically buying a new PC anyways.

The purpose of my PC is to play TES, Dark Souls series, Fallout series,Terraria, Overwatch, and find new games to play.
My budget is around $1,400 mark but I can push it to $1,500 if I need to.
1080p 144hz on high/max settings for games.

>>
>>60901741
Thanks!
I honestly didn't know that.
So I can just keep the motherboard if I keep the CPU?
And would you recommend getting DDR4 ram then, is that compatible with the cpu? sorry am noob
>>
Maybe it was asked before but should I trust Asrock mobos now? I have very bad experiences with them but the i/o is much better than on alternatives. Do they die very quick still?
>>
>>60901882
Dark Souls games run at 60fps and a 1050ti is enough to play DS2 4K 60fps, DS1 1440p60fps (very awfully optimized) and DS3 1080p60fps, even with a Pentium G4560 processor.
Overwatch is the same, and Fallout series all are older games so those too, Terraria runs on a toaster.
Your build is pretty good and enough for these games, tho I would recommend you change the PSU to the EVGA G series instad.

Hey lads,

I've got an unusual project I'm working on right now. Pic related, it's the aesthetic I'm going for (Retrofuturistic, industrial/mainframe-ish look)

Right now I'm mainly looking at cases - I'm an experienced case modder and will be modding the hell out of it.

The cases I'm looking at right now are...

-Thermaltake Level 10 (Would love the titanium edition if I can find it cheaply enough)

-Obsidian 900D, though I've never been a fan of the corsair cases

-SS TJ* (11, 08, 07, one of the behemoth ones)

Any suggestions?
>>
>>60901934
They are good now, the B350M Pro4 mobo is the best mATX there is at the moment, Gigabyte is the one to avoid now with their shitty VRM solution, and MSI has 1 shitty B350 board (Gaming Pro)
>>
>>60901965
Case is the one I'd really like I think, but it's absurdly expensive.

Also, in case someone chimes in with a suggestion of racking - I have a few 4U server chassis laying around, but I'm at university and my rack is still back home soooo rackmount is out of the question, even though that would fit the aesthetic nicely.
>>

Question for you, lads.
I was checking compatibility between my mobo (Msi carbon) and RAM (G.skill 3200).

>>
>>60902135

>>60901618
the NEW pc sonds great. I just don´t see anything other than the HDD worth saving

>>60901882
1080p at 144Hz is one of the few cases where INtel beats the current AMD lineup. if you DON´T plan on streaming or doing content creation or productivity, I'd go witht the i7 7700K, that said, the newer games will probably be optimized for multiple cores and threads. ANd that intel socket is dead in the water for upgrades.
>>
>>60901934
I built a 1600 / rx480 build with an asrock ab350 pro4 atx, shit has been solid as a rock since launch.
>>
>>60902163
If you can afford one get one.

If you're not committed to your rig, maybe purchase used and get a really dank system for even cheaper than your current $1200?

Re: specific recomendations - I've been out of tech for too long to field specific recomendations, but I've always been a fan of the Intel and Samsung SSDs. PSUs, I would insist on an 80+. I've always liked Seasonic, but Silverstone and Corsair aren't terrible choices either. Beware the faggots who will tell you to get a kW or even 700w; ime 500w is all you need and a nice 80+ gold or plat with modular cabling.
>>
>>60901934
AsRock has been gret this past two years or so

the best AM4 MoBos come from them.

the Taichi is the best X370 and the AB350m is the best mATX board for the price

Right, thanks, it was weird that they offer 6 sata and 2 m.2 on a 350 board. Great value if they don't break down like ten years ago.

well depends on what you´re doing with your PC. but I would personally upgrade all the pc but the graphics card.

Ryzen is pretty great. get a 1080p monitor at least. the difference is huge and well worth it.

and it shouldn´t even be expensive. you can get a freesync 1080p monitor for like $150
and the whole ryzen plataform is not very expensive too (only that you have to get DDR4 RAM, which is expensive ATM).

Want to spend around 800-900€ on cpu, Mobo, GPU and RAM. Maybe even an air cooler if ryzen stock is not enough.

The problem is I can't fucking decide which ryzen and mobo should I choose. Any advice? I suppose a RX 580 8gb should work fine.

Main purpose is updating PC to stay fine for at least 5 years. I'm not a gayman but I'll play some games (1080 on high, i don't give a fuck about 4k). Apart from that I will be using the PC for processing access and Excel sheets and a little AutoCAD.

I know the resolution is Aids, as I have my pc hooked up to a 32 inch TV instead of a true monitor as I'm a poor fag.
This is what i was considering for an upgrade path, as I think I can by using everything that in the PC.

I'm on the same resolution with a Ryzen 1600 / rx480 build. I got the TV (Dynex 35 inch or something) like 5 years ago as a gift and cant bring myself to replace it yet. Only time it really bugs me is doing Premiere and After Effects work where the interface gets really cramped

At least 120. A popular move is getting a 120 + a 1TB HDD or some other larger drive for data, with the ssd being a boot and critical applications drive.

Serious question : are A320 boards completely worthless? I never hear anyone mentioning them.

I'm building a budget PC for a family member and they sure don't know anything about overclocking and never will... wouldn't it be worth it in that case to save 30 bucks or so? Implying they'd already be more than fine with the stock speeds of course.

That's probably because this thread is surrounded by tech enthusiasts. Once Ryzen 3 comes out I'm sure the extreme budget people will start buying them.

well. the cheapest A320 boards are only $10 less than the cheapest B350 boards.. So I'm not sure about the real budget implications of AB320

>>
>>60902589
A 1600 should last you long but you can always get the 1700 to ensures it to last longer and performs better in your CAD software & excel sheets (if for some reason you happen to be the kind to load thousands of sheets every few seconds or something)
900€ might be tight for a 1700 though, that should leave you between 230 ~ 260€ for the GPU (assuming 16GB RAM), so you might wanna check for sales
>>
>>60903743
>Was I lied to?
Yes
For Intel the stock cooler is pretty shit, it tends to be noisy and can heat noticeably at time, but it's still fine to keep in itself
For AMD the stock cooler is pretty decent, it's very very quiet and cools decently (can even handle some decent overclocks)
>>
>>60903436
>if I can get the most for the price
Assuming a budget of $1200: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/xWDQsJ
The cooler is optional but recommended if you want OC higher than 3.7GHz.
550W PSU is enough but 650W will give you more headroom and better efficiency, it's $10 more at most, i recommend it.
>>
guys what is the difference between ryzen x with non x?
are all ryzen cpus came with stock cooler ?
>>
>>60903783
Well I got a new topic to talk about with my friends now, thanks for clearing that up. Now about the 2 fans would that be needed or not. I live in an area that could reach about 102-105 degrees Fahrenheit in very extreme circumstances but mostly during summer we teeter at about 89-94 degrees Fahrenheit. Also will be adding a DVD drive since they are relatively cheap.
>>
>>60903743
The advice I can give you is that you might need two fans at the front. I have a master case 5 and i have one at the front blowing on the hard disks but I'm planning to get a second one because the gpu heats up the middle a bit too much.

>>
>>60903829
1600x, 1700x and 1800x do not come with a cooler. The rest do, including the 1500x.
The X versions have a tendency to clock higher than their non-X version, have higher clocks and have better XFR (better per-core clock boost)
Getting an X version is rarely worth it

>>
>>60903942
Ryzen are indeed good at emulation and gaming. Intel is noticeably better at emulation but it generally doesn't matter as the vast majority of emulated system aren't cpu heavy enough to make any difference from a ryzen CPU to an intel one
For gaming the $315 (+ cooler) 7700k is the best as it can hit the highest framerate out of every CPU, but the rest of Intel's lineup is pretty meh as the i5's 4 threads cause it to get FPS drops in quite the bunch of games (Watch Dogs 2, BF1, GTA V, Witcher 3 to name a few) making both the 1500x & 1600(x) a better choice than any i5 in general

>So 1400 or 1500x? I just can't justify to spend more than 200 on a cpu or gpu. Btw how is oc on 1400 with its inferior cooler.
The 1400 is pretty shit, it has half the cache and lower clocks (+ worse cooler) than the 1500x causing noticeably lower framerate. It's performs generally the same as the $75 G4560 (although it does get less FPS drops, but that's not worth costing more than double the price)

>Is it worth it to liquid cool both the CPU and GPU?
Maybe? It depends on your needs
What do you do precisely that requires you to get both a 7700k, 1080ti and liquid cool them?
Liquid cooling is expensive and custom loops are quite dangerous, if you mess it up you can say goodbye to your expensive components. If it's something cool but not dangerous you want then get a beefy air cooler / AIO for the CPU, and get and an ugly artic extreme IV for the GPU
But liquid cooling isn't that much cooler
>>
>>60905483
I guess? From what I've seen from his partpicker list he wants a gaymen pc

Sudden change of heat are very bad for components lifetime, as long as it's as your components are somewhere between 15 - 85°C and don't fluctuate that much there is no problem

Good luck then anon buy w/e floats your boat
>>
>>60905503
Yes. That is true for all electrical components but your build will be obsolete long before heat kills your card via wear and stress so long as your fans are spinning 100% 24/7 because you are running furmark all day.
>>
>>60905518
Because a 1060 isn't going to be hitting 144 often so I would recommend an IPS 1080p60hz monitor over a TN 1080p144hz monitor unless he games a lot.
>>
>>60905412
FE (aka "stock") 1080 Tis have the same mounting points, GPU location, and VRM locations from different vendors, so they're the most numerous in terms of choices from waterblock makers. If you want more overclocking headroom, then buy either a Gigabyte AORUS, ASUS ROG Poseidon (has a built-in waterblock), or EVGA FTW3. The AORUS and FTW3 have the most number of waterblocks out of all the custom AIBs.

Find an MSI motherboard and buy their CPU Guard 1151 for direct die cooling on any Skylake or Kaby Lake processor, along with liquid metal thermal paste. Look up delidding videos for Skylake, they apply to Kaby Lake as well.

Looking at PSUs for sale. Thinking about getting a gold certified 750w PSU. My build uses about 520w. I would like some wattage insurance and room to overclock a bit, should I choose to.

What are your thoughts about:

Is the 980ti still relevant as a card capable of 1440p on AAA games? I have a 980ti classified and wondering if the 1080ti is worth the upgrade? Or should I wait for Vega?

The card is paired with a Ryzen 1700X and I do gaming on a 32" 1440p 60hz panel.

If you're doing great with your current GPU then there's no need to get a new one, anon
Vega is soon and Volta isn't that far so by the time your GPU becomes too weak to play current games at 1440p max settings, there will already be a lot of new options for you to choose instead of going for the 1080 ti.

I'm still basically pre-planning my first build, and I've got a question that might be dumb:
If I want the ability to work with big data sets in excel, R, and python does my processor or memory matter more?
I work in data science, and I want to build a pc that could actually handle excel sheets with more than 50k rows unlike my i5 Apple desktop at work, but I'm not sure what price range I want.
I also like the idea of quality gaming, but I'm not sure how much of that I'd actually do.

Are NAS boxes generally a better investment than regular external HDDs?
>>
>>60905664
A mix of both. I always like tinkering with new tech and the 1080ti and it's 2+GHz core clock was calling to me. I can only get my 980ti stable at 1686mhz and that's with LN2 BIOS, problem is I hit my thermal wall and it falls out of boost.
>>60905712
Yea I figured as much. Idk, when I didn't have money I used to buy a lot of low end or middle of the road parts that would need upgrading within a year. Now that I have a great job and buy more top shelf stuff, it feels odd to be able to keep parts for so long.
