Just 'cause the source is bad (presumably... I don't know any of these people) doesn't mean the explanation is bad.

If a user ever has to deal with the nuts-and-bolts of the OS, it's fucked.

This isn't unique to Linux; compare the clusterfuck of Windows printer drives to Apple's AirPrint.

AirPrint: connect to WiFi, print.
Windows: download drivers, install drives, reboot, add printer through USB, configure WiFi connectivity, add printer WiFi port, pray it works.

Now, recently Windows has adopter Bonjour printing services (AirPrint), so this comparison is more apt for a few years ago, but you can see as time goes on, having to deal with drivers, settings, and all that other shit is GOING AWAY.

And it needs to go away in Linux, too.

Linux is perfectly fine at maintaining dominance within its specific niches, like servers, HPC, and software development.
I don't see what's so controversial or mind-shattering about the statement that it's not suitable for your average 40-year-old white-collar worker who uses Excel/Word to write reports at work and goes home to browse Facebook. Linus literally isn't saying anything new here.

>>60894637
It is a fallacy but it's actually happening. You can whine about reddit and normies all you want, point remains that millions of people listen to Linus and are influenced by what he says.
If he says Linux is shit they will believe it. They might try Linux once and see that he was right; It is too complicated for them. They won't give it a chance because they already heard it's shit.
Then they will reinstall Windows, develop software for Windows and laugh at people who think they should make software for Linux. And that's why the year of the Linux desktop will never come.

>>
>>60894701
Most distros will install themselves with little input from the user. Only autistic maymay distros like Arch, Void, Gentoo, etc. expect any interaction unless something breaks, and things don't break nearly as much as people say they do.

The greatest block GNU/Linux has for normalfags is in laptops, and specifically laptops with NICs that are supported poorly (Mediakek, Broadcum). I don't expect anyone to waste their time trying to get that shit to work, especially as a beginner, because it's fucking cancer. Not really Linux's fault though.

Who cares. The less retards, the better. Enterprise is as strong as ever, and the competent userbase also contributes. Linux literally doesn't need the general illiterate populace - let them have their smartphones and keep away. Only corporate entities like Red Hat and Canonical *need* such userbase.

The user shouldn't be touching the system files or running entire graphical programs as root, this is why polkit exists, but if you must just install krusader, it has the option to run as root integrated and is good for advanced tasks.

Also this argument doesn't deny what the other anon said, distros like ubuntu are easy as fuck to use. Every OS has quirks, the difference is that you may be very well accustomed to the quirks of your OS and that's why you feel it's easier.

I mean lets get real for a moment. You install windows 10 in about 45 minutes and for most linuxes its about the same but remember. Biggest base linuxes are about 1 gigabytes or 2 while windows 10 can be more than 5 gigabytes of data. And what happens when you open them. On the linux there are about 2 functional buttons, 3 are nonfunctional and in those two buttons there are some pictures to play with. Maybe slide down or up. On windows though, you feel like a god. Its professional its fast, its all functional. You have a godlike user interface. The thing that the linux does not have. You have those two buttons in the linux, but you still search google for codes to write in terminal. Linux is free because its not worth a penny. Nobody would sell a paper without taking the money. Just not sure why people still buy android while windows phone does 10 times more. Trust me. When you work with windows you know some genius ground breaker dedicated himself to give you an operational os

I was just thinking about this and the truth is, Linux as it is right now, is simply not viable. Things that are preventing it from being widely adopted in home use are:

>GPL

While this itself is a great thing and should be more widely used, the problem is that it isn't and the jews run big corporations like Adobe will never adopt to a free license unless something much better comes along and really kills Photoshop. How likely do you think this will be? The fact is that what normies want is the most simplified and effective applications and those unfortunately are as proprietary as they get.

>POSIX and Unix-likeness

Great things for servers, but a home user will not want any of this shit. The further Linux goes from Unix the more user friendly it gets. Systemd, while usually dislike among /g/'s most battle hardened gentoo memesters, is a good step forward. People have gold plated memories of init files, it was a real mess back then.

>Non shit DE

Biggest problem with Linux in my mind right now is the poor state of desktop environments. They are non-consistent (GTK vs Qt) and need more uniformity. Gnome is a joke, KDE is bad because Qt, Unity looks like it's 10 years old unless you install a custom theme (it needs to look good out of the box) and that side bar is STUPID. XFCE is good but buggy as shit and it's been like that since it was conceived. Everything else looks so dated they are simply not viable.

>Overly complex

What OS X did right was simplification. It's BSD-like, so you still have the console for advanced users, it permits more modification than windows and you can natively run many Unix-applications like ssh but for those who don't understand what ssh (or so) is, there's that polished uniformal interface with great integration and external hardware support.

In my mind all Linux needs to do is copy all the OS X stuff and release it under some distro that has repos as large as Ubuntu.

So some faggy nerd with a bad haircut and attitude give his oh so original opinion about Linux not targeting "soccer mums" as their audience.

Therefore Linux is bad.

Therefore he has "basically ended" this board.

Uhm.. OK.
I forgot we are on a blue board.
Keep on posting your hot opinions, friendo.

The problem is that you shouldn't be "educating" them, you should be making the system robust and foolproof so they can't fuck it up.

You are expecting retards to figure out the intricacies of an operating system in order to use it. You, and people like you, are genuine idiots, just as ignorant as the normie retards you despise.

luckily when things crash, they usually restart in a few seconds, but it's still pretty annoying to just find that krunner just died randomly.

Day in the life of a normie trying linux:
>want to use program, no idea that an app manager even exists
>google "install x in linux", find webpage
>Download .tar, The fuck is .tar? Oh it's like an archive...?
>What the fuck are all these files? Where's the .exe, how do I run this? How do I install it?
>Don't even know wtf to type in google, maybe after 30 minutes of research realize you have to compile it
>Google how to compile, fuck it up because you have no fucking clue what you're doing or how to do it or if anything you're doing is wrong
>If you're LUCKY, 1% of the people who started trying to install have gotten this far. At this point 99% of the remaining 1% give up in frustration and reinstall windows

Linux retards think this state of affairs is okay.

It is not easy to install on linux because linux does not make it clear to a user HOW to install.
Linux does not give a user a decent alternative installation method
If you try to install anything manually you can completely fuck up your system, especially relevant for retards copy pasting and editing CLI commands not know what any of it means

If your OS REQUIRES the user to type something into the command line, EVER, your OS is GARBAGE and normies will NEVER use it.

Lincucks are too fucking stupid to figure these things out. Maybe in another two decades we can have another thread like this where everyone points out the blatantly fucking obvious to idiot lincucks and they continue going "No it's not us that are the problem!!!1!!" while marketshare continues to stagnate at 0.1%

I cannot understate how fucking stupid linux users are.

As far as crashes go, I'd suggest turning off experimental options under compositor settings if those are enabled by default on your distro. After I did that, I haven't had a single crash. And it's not enabled by default anymore, at least not on Antergos and Arch I guess. Try that. Other fixes are most likely out of our reach.

Things become garbage when normies catch up with it, not the other way around firne.d
Everything a normie touches turns to shit.

Remember old Windows? Windows 2000 was the last version of Windows made with professionals in mind. It looked great, it was spartan, robust, efficient.
Remember what happened when Microsoft realized that soccer moms are a great source of money? Windows XP with it's fischer price UI.

Don't pretend it's otherwise.
As soon as something becomes popular among the drooling normalfags you can abandon the idea, because the next iteration will be catered to them, not you.

ITT: Spillover from /v/ blaming their ineptitude with anything other than Windows on the OS.

It's kind of funny seeing so many of these supposedly really "technically adept" types go all apeshit over people using Linux or OSX. My experience is that it's usually just their ego telling them that "No, you can't be bad at something relating to computers, so it has to be something other than you" to avoid having to admit that they only know how to use Windows.

Personally I dumped Windows for OSX around 2007 and after a lot of tinkering with UNIX stuff in OSX all my desktops have since then run Linux (while my laptops run OSX). At this point Windows has to me become "That OS the clueless, kids who want to play games and those who have to use some really obscure tools only available on Windows". Pretty much all the software I run into, even the obscure stuff like AVR Studio, Matlab, Quartus II, etc., run on ether Linux or OSX.

And the first thing you will see are guides that show the app manager
There are a fuckton of resources telling you how to install apps in Linux. Even the installation GUI tells you that as it installs. There's no way that a normalfag wouldn't know how to install the most basic applications in Linux.

The difference with Linux is that it can simultaneously cater to retards and power users. With Linux, it's the power users that actually manage the distros so almost none of them cater to retards, while video games are managed by executives who listen to focus groups.

Knowing how to use an operating system doesn't require you to know assembly or how instructions are executed on a CPU.
Expecting a computer (one of the most complex machines ever created) to be "user-friendly" and usable without any knowledge or training is retarded.
Cars aren't designed so that someone who has never been taught to drive one or has not practiced using one can intuitively learn how to.

apple again is the smart one here. if you work at their call center for a week you will know what he means by making it easier to use for the public because you really want to hang up on some people that are really stupid when it comes to technology

the return policy shit that runs in the US / west is also very retarded, the number of people calling in to get free shit with stupid ass excuse is higher than mount rushmore. the refund request calls are higher.

people should be held accountable for their stupidity especially when it comes to purchases, too many people purchase some shit and regrets it then ask for a refund. no wonder apple doesnt service your shit or replace your devices with new parts but rather used parts.

You're making assumptions because everyone has to learn the retarded way that windows choses to do things.
If everyone used linux then normies trying to use windows to install would be even more confusing for them.
