How is this keyboard? If I'm to go for topre, is it the best choice?
>>
>>60893069
bretty gud
>>
>>60893069
Best option in my opinion. It has a plate unlike the HHKB and there's now a programmable controller for it.
>>

bought this exact keyboard except in the other colour. layout is excellent. topre is exceedingly average.

i'm going to try swapping left ctrl with win key

this way i can press ctrl with my pinkies without straining too much

left ctrl in this configuration sits straight below the relevant part of the left shift key

right ctrl is comfy because i'm using a 75% layout so it below right shift and / key

also going to try ctrl+space=backspace

and i'm using capslock=enter so that if i use the left hand to finish a line i use the normal enter with my right pinky and if i use the right hand to finish a line i press capslock with my left pinky
>>
>>60893069
The layout is better than the HHKB imo, I use it as my main board and love it
>>

mine is rgb but with the new keycaps i just use it with the lights off. i don't look at the keyboard much and the white legends are legible. with non shine-through keycaps you're better off with pure white backlighting like on the gateron plum 84. could probably paint or plastidip the case if you want a black one.

>>
>>60894374
Looking for 60% or 80% TKL?
Preference for switches, color, RGB / LED?
>>
>>60894383
i guess 80%
i'm used to using the insert/delete/pageup/down keys for vidya and it'd be too hard to adjust

i'm still looking into switches a little but i'm leaning towards gateron. cherries felt like cheap toys to me

i have no interest in lights but i'm not actively looking to avoid them or anything
>>
>>60894400
Magicforce/Varmilo 68 both have ins/del/pgup/pgdn clusters if you want something smaller than a TKL with them.
>>
>>60894860
thoughts on the Saber68? I like the layout a little bit more and it's slightly cheaper, also has a wide selection of switches available once i figure out what i want.

my biggest concern is the kind of build quality i can get for this price range

saber68 was known as tada68 before the chinese sellers got to it. it's really solid and comes with great keycaps.

>>
>>60894995
i don't think any serious programmer would go below 60%/hhkb. i'm a bit curious about putting characters on a layer below the alphas so you don't have to move your fingers as much but it would probably require a split spacebar (so you have an easily accessible thumb modifier) for it to work effectively.

I need to replace pic related.
I don't have huge amounts of money.

What's the best mech keyboard for under £50 in /g's opinion?
Could probably spend more but don't want to.
I like small keyboards as I have a small desk.
>>
I'm building a PC, and I've never used a mechanical keyboard before. Would red or blue switches be better for my experience?
>>
>>60896243
The bigger the meme the better the experience
>>
>>60895473
Literally the exact same keyboard, the American distributor just changed the name they sell it under to try and make people think it's not chinkmade. Saber version does have the option of getting mod switches instead of gaterons if you like burning money though.
>>
>>60896243
Blue's are shit for gaming. I'm assuming you're going to be gaming though.
>>
>>60896423
Blues are fine for gaming, you just can't float them like linear or tactile switches because of that hysterisis thing
>>
>>60896443
They're fine the same way membrane's fine. In which case, why not just use membrane? If you prefer them for typing and use them for gaming as well, fine. Just don't choose them for gaming.

>>
>>60896609
>How work without numpad?
Wew lad.
>>
I've always wondered whether there is a noticeable difference between cheap and expensive keyboards with the same switch or not?
Given that you fit both keyboards with the same caps.
>>
>>60896651
Only in stabilizers for buttons.
Some expensive keyboards have nice features like 3 usb ports.
But yeah difference is becoming smaller every year.

Ofcourse it is more easy to find expensive kb with good build quality than cheap one.
>>
>>60896651
Key rollover, cable/port quality, extra features like hubs/macro keys.

>>60896911
this man is correct
>>
>>60896783
Yes Korean customs are absurdly overhyped. I wouldn't say overpriced because the cost of labour in Korea, economics of scale and increased fit and finish compared to most of their contemparies help justify that, they're just completely unnecessary ultra premium type products.
>>
>>60896243
>>60896487
for gaming you might prefer red or black. see if you can go to a store and type on a few different keyboards to see how they feel and sound
>>
>>60896911
the numpad doesn't have to be built into the keyboard
>>
>>60896783
most keyboards in the ~$100 range have good build quality. the reason why some people want a ~$300 korean custom isn't necessarily that they're "better" but they're "different" and are tailored for people's specific needs/wants. and they tend to spare no expense like they tend to have aluminium cases and even the switches can be customized with different springs and such.

I actually wasn't even aware of the existence of 75% when i bought my TADA68, whose 60% layout I've actually come to prefer now.
Plus, it being programmable means that I can map:
>Fn + Up / Down arrow to change volume,
>Fn + Left / Right to skp to next or previous songs.
Way easier to remember IMO. 75% is overkilled to me now.

Look up Motospeed on Amazon. They have a decent selection around that pricepoint, though blue switches are really the only option they sell.
Pic is the CK103 RGB for $60 on GearBest.

>>60896622
>>60897414
Drevo Gamr is known for not registering keypresses 100% of the time.
US Amazon has more reviews, and a lower rating because of the issue.

>Do people seriously put rubber rings under their keys?
I've done it to 5 boards now.
#1 reason is that it makes the board quieter.
#2 is that the key activates at 2mm, but bottoms out at 4mm. Adding a ring will mean bottoming out at 3mm, effectively cutting potential unnecessary travel distance by half, while retaining the feel of typing on a mechanical board. But that's just me, and I'm probably on the spectrum.

>>60899218
Logitech has some decent boards out now (G413, G610, G810), but they're all pretty expensive, and Logitech uses their own in-house switches that /g/ isn't really a fan of - though it's personal preference there.
Like I told the first anon on a budget, look up Motospeed if you're short on cash for a full board.

You can get a VicTop/VicTsing/EasterntimesTech I-500 with outemus for like £25 on amazon, maybe under £20 on ebay. (It's actual chinkshit hence the variety of names and branding - you can recognise it by the ram head/uterus logo).

You get what you pay for or even slightly more - it's a very usable keyboard from what I've heard. Outemu is definitely not cherry or gateron, but it's not like it'll break your fingers or something. All in all it's a chinkshit keyboard where you won't get chinked, but instead will get something very usable for the price.

Of course if you have the budget you may prefer to pay extra for gaterons or something. The tada68 is $99 which is like £75, and everyone greatly recommends it (plus it's completely reprogrammable).

Tada is 65% though. 60% has no arrow keys or navigation buttons

For keyboards, not really. You can't go much higher than $120-150 without being meme-tier (such as a $300 ergodox ez), $90 is decent mid-range.

I got memed on tons of things on here.. kek.. PBT, DSA, topre, TKL, 68%, gateron blues, kbdfans seller... etc. All in all, it all worked out well.

But I can't tell the diff between these o-rings. At all. maybe it's softer when you bottom out and that might be important for some switches + keycap combo but I can't tell. Anyway, a $1 I spent on this is not an issue. Let me know if these other ones make any difference. So you can input numbers while keeping your hand on the mouse.

Either way one hand has to move to use the numpad, but at least you can click around if it's on the left, whereas if it's on the right you can neither type nor use the mouse while entering numbers.

not him but the slightly nonstandard keys are the 6u spacebar, 1.75u right shift, 1.5u/1.0u bottom row ctrl/alt/etc. they're not impossible to find but not all keycap sets include them

if you get the topre version you'll have a much harder time finding keycaps but you can use cherry mx adapters

Only the bottom row is non standard to fit those arrow keys. If you want something similar there is the cooler master pro m, but it doesn't have an option for topre switches. >>
>>60908523
Wait, so if I want greens, but I have a keyboard with gateron blues, can I just get green springs and swap them?

Where should I look for these springs? Do I need to solder anything to open the switches? How likely am I to fuck something up if I've never messed around with something like that before, if 0 is installing a new HDD and 10 is delidding your CPU?
>>
>>60910680
Yeah, same deal. You're likely to fuck up a switch or two if you've never done it before, but just buy an extra five or so when you get the springs to cover your mistakes. Desoldering is the easiest way to go about it, but creative bending of a couple tiny screwdrivers into hooks for the top half release will get you there if you don't have plate-mounted switches.

I'd give it a 4 if you've never done it. Once you have the tools and have done it once, I'd drop it to a 2 or 3.
>>
>>60910743
Nice, thanks! Where's the best place to look for springs? Would they be marketed as "green springs" or "80g springs"?

Also I just noticed greens and whites seem very similar, both being clicky 80g switches. What's the difference?
>>
>>60910830
Whites have an inconsistent but generally quieter click. No-one really knows why, except Cherry confirmed it's not from additional lubrication.

My logitech g15 membrane lasted me 10 years before it started performing as badly as a mechanical does out of the box.

The Coolermaster board was premium and shit.
This one that hasn't arrived yet is apparently shit.
I asked in this thread what to buy and got pointed in that direction.

It seems obvious at this point a £10 microsoft membrane keyboard is better than a £100 mechanical one if you want the buttons to actually register when pressed.

This and altcodes are a bitch when coding. It is also easier when you are working in a record and need to put in multiple numbers.

i am basically saying 100% are for those who actually work on their keyboards instead of people who just take pictures of their keyboards like instagram girls.

Also dsa and sa and all that shit sucks. They are terrible to type on. I have no idea why they are so hyped.
