i used to run an e8400 and about a year or two ago i found out about the 771 mod from someone here (totally by accident).

running an x5470 now. mobo is pretty weak though and i dont think it will take an OC.

ddr2 is just not worth it. I'm pretty sure the memory sticks I have are fucked, but I'll have to test them first. Been meaning to make a backup file server using my old 775 rig.

I have an old Q6600 /w 8800GTX in my close that hasn't been touched in years. What should I use it for? It's in a full tower with 10 fans so I never had overheating issues like OP.

The difference you will feel when switching to any AMD CPU or iX Intel CPU will be massive.

It's surprising how much less sluggishness there is in the everything, once the northbridge is eliminated.

I had used my LGA775 machine as my main desktop computer for 8 years when I retired it. From 2006 to 2014. It served for another year as my server before it got replaced by some mini ITX board from Asrock Rack.

By the end of its lifetime it had been upgraded to a E7600. I was thinking about getting a Q9550 instead of buying a new computer, but the prices for those processors were still too high I thought, so I figured it made more sense to buy a whole new computer.The computer was always a little dusty due to the non-functional dust filters that the case had.
