Certain chip manufacturers (MediaTek probably being the worst out of them all) don't really update their drivers for newer kernels.
That's the reason why Google gave up on maintaining the Nexus 5, because Broadcom refused to update the Wi-Fi drivers.
Most AOSP-based roms that are ported to old devices tend to have old, potentially vulnerable, haunted versions of the kernel because of this and have to resort to hacking android to make it even work.

Hardware wise its an all around close spiritual successor to the Nexus 6 with the exception being a second speaker (as if any phone has dual speakers anymore) that said considering that the OS is shit you can either go international for the Exynos chipset that will allow rooting and custom ROM flashing or stick with Snapdragon, find ways around Knox approved apps that can hook into the system and work around needing root/custom roms by making your experience as close to vanilla as possible.

Its unfortunate, having a Nexus 6 myself I was hoping the Pixel would be everything I wanted, but for a device with so much lacking compared to my 2 year old device one must ask what in the fuck was Google thinking with this?

Why are people acting like the 1m a failure and due to perceived flaws with the device when Google is literally selling them as fast as they can make them? Even if the Pixel had tiny bezels, a removable battery, SD card, front speakers, etc it would have about the same number.
